Old name for a baby boy

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!

I’m new here and I have been going through a lot of names lately to find the perfect one for our second baby boy. So far I haven’t had much luck. Hopefully you guys can help me come up with some new ideas!

Our first boy is named [name_m]Chester[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. We would like our second baby to have a name that goes well with it, but isn’t matchy-matchy. We like old names with history that are not very popular currently (preferably outside the top 500, maybe even outside the top 1000?).

Some names that we like but have decided not to use for one reason or another are [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_m]Harold[/name_m] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m].

One of my all time favorite names is [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], but it seems to be gaining popularity as a girl’s name and i don’t like that. I’ve been thinking about maybe using it as a middle name.

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] is our top contender right now. Opinions about that name would be appreciated as well.

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] is a wonderful match with [name_m]Chester[/name_m]!

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u]

I love the name [name_m]Chester[/name_m]! It was my great grandfather’s name and I’d love to be as brave as you and use it one day! I think [name_m]Linus[/name_m] matches [name_m]Chester[/name_m] well!

Suggestions that sound nice with [name_m]Chester[/name_m]:

[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Ralph[/name_m]

Good luck!

I love [name_m]Linus[/name_m]!

I like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] a lot. And a lot of good suggestions in the replies as well, especially [name_m]Ralph[/name_m]. Also, what about [name_m]Roger[/name_m]? A very old name that is rarely heard today.

Thanks everyone! Some great suggestions on your lists. Awesome to hear you like [name_m]Linus[/name_m], we didn’t exactly get a great response from the [name_f]MIL[/name_f].

[name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] - My husband can only think of “gomer” when he sees this name, lol. But I love the nickname [name_m]Monty[/name_m]. Can anyone think of another name that could lead to [name_m]Monty[/name_m]? Or what do you think of using [name_m]Monty[/name_m] on its own as a possible first name?
[name_m]Ralph[/name_m] - I actually kinda like this name, but I’m not sure I’m able to get over the whole puke association.
[name_m]Barney[/name_m] - My husband asked if this name was the reason I’ve been buying purple onesies for the baby, so I guess it’s a no.
[name_m]Harry[/name_m] - This is a great name. I never realised how unpopular it is at the moment.
[name_u]Fran[/name_u]… -names - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_m]Frans[/name_m], [name_m]Frank[/name_m] and all the other [name_u]Fran[/name_u]-names. However my niece will be named [name_f]Francine[/name_f] and they’re already calling her [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] so that rules out all of those names.
[name_m]Otis[/name_m] - This name is really starting to grow on me.
[name_m]Gordon[/name_m] - I like this one.
[name_m]Morris[/name_m]/[name_m]Moritz[/name_m]/[name_u]Maurice[/name_u] - I keep going back and forth with these names, one day I like them and the next day I don’t.
[name_m]Marvin[/name_m] - I really like this one.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - I kinda like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], but [name_m]Robert[/name_m] has been so popular for so long I fear people would get them mixed up.
[name_m]Roger[/name_m] - I would probably love this name if there wasn’t an annoying uncle in the family who always says “roger that”.

My husband just mentioned [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] and I think I really like it. What do you think of [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u]?

Another way to get to [name_m]Monty[/name_m] could be [name_m]Montague[/name_m]. I saw a birth annoucement in the newspaper the other day for a baby [name_m]Montague[/name_m] and thought it was quite dfferent and interesting (I would pronounce it three syllables, last one riming with queue). I do like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] but for what it’s worth it always makes me think of [name_m]Linux[/name_m]. I love the idea of [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], and have no idea at all what you mean by the puke association, if that helps! I also think [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] is brilliant and goes really well with [name_m]Chester[/name_m].

[name_u]Alden[/name_u]
[name_m]Walden[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Nigel[/name_m]
[name_m]Dwight[/name_m]

Idk if you guys use a nn for [name_m]Chester[/name_m] but [name_m]Chet[/name_m] & [name_u]Wally[/name_u] would be amazing

[name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] & [name_m]Chester[/name_m] are great together. In fact, I think it’s my favourite of all your options.

If you like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], I don’t think it would get mixed up with [name_m]Robert[/name_m] - it’s familiar enough.

I love [name_m]Chester[/name_m] and [name_m]Linus[/name_m] as well as [name_m]Chester[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]! However I think that [name_m]Chester[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] seems like a better fit. Since [name_m]Chester[/name_m] was popular during the 1880’s I refer to that time period for other names as below:

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m], [name_m]Warren[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m], [name_m]Clayton[/name_m], [name_m]Wilburn[/name_m] & [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]

I love [name_u]Monroe[/name_u]!! I hope you keep it in the running.

For me, the peanuts association is just too strong for the name [name_m]Linus[/name_m] to ever work without dragging that association along with it.

I hope you choose [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], but some other names that I think work well with [name_m]Chester[/name_m] include [name_m]Leroy[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], and [name_m]Rufus[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_m]Chester[/name_m], but I do have some other suggestions if you haven’t considered them already. These were all popular in the same year as [name_m]Chester[/name_m].

[name_m]Eugene[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Willard[/name_m]
[name_m]Marvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Morris[/name_m]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]

Thanks everyone, this has really helped us with our list. Right now our top 5 in no particular order are:
[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_u]Sheldon[/name_u]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_m]Marvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Gordon[/name_m]

I still can’t forget about [name_m]Monty[/name_m] though. But I can’t seem to find a full name for it that I like and it may be too nickname-y on its own.

It would still be nice to hear your opinions about those names.
And middle name suggestions are welcome too. Right now [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] is on top of that list if we don’t use it as a first name.

You have some great ideas and options here!

Another way to possibly get to [name_m]Monty[/name_m] would be to use the name [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] with a middle name that starts with a “T”. Something like [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - pull the “Mon” from [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] and add the “T” from [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] to get “[name_m]Monty[/name_m]” It is kind of a stretch and may not be your style but I just thought I’d throw that out there!

Good luck!

Hmm I didnt realize [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] was on your list…I love [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] for reasons I can’t really explain. Its on the cusp of being old man-esque but not quite there yet. [name_m]Gord[/name_m] is a great nickname with lots of positive namesakes. [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] or [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] would be my choice.

I adore [name_m]Harold[/name_m] and [name_u]Howard[/name_u]. Definitely can’t wait until they come back…

From your current list, I like [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] best. I can’t quite warm up to [name_m]Linus[/name_m]; it just sounds vaguely clinical to me, like sinus and, uh, other body parts. [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] is great, but I’d have reservations since it’s a main character on the TV show “Big Bang [name_m]Theory[/name_m]” — which I know without even watching the show, so I would assume quite a few people might make that connection.

I also like [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], but it doesn’t sound “old” to me since presidential names like [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] and [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] are fairly popular.

My favourite of your new list is [name_m]Gordon[/name_m]. I’ve never been a fan of [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] or [name_m]Marvin[/name_m], and [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] doesn’t feel as classic or old-fashioned to me as [name_m]Chester[/name_m] does (also, I’d wonder if the presidential theme was deliberate, and I’m not American).

I was going to suggest [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] too. I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Robert[/name_m] sound different enough that they won’t be mixed up, and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] would be familiar to most people from the actors [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Grint. I’ve only heard the retching association with [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] on Nameberry, never in real life, though that might be regional?

[name_u]Francis[/name_u] is a lovely name, and I was actually going to suggest it when I saw that you’d ruled it out. I don’t think [name_u]Francis[/name_u] and [name_f]Francine[/name_f] would be too close for cousins though, especially since they’ll be opposite genders. My sister is [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] and we have a cousin [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], and no one has ever thought that was too close.

Here are some more suggestions:

[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Reginald[/name_m]
[name_m]Bertram[/name_m]

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]

[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_u]Gene[/name_u]
