The ones that I personally like and can see becoming popular again are:
[name]Nellie[/name] (especially in the UK)
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Minnie[/name] (Ditto [name]Nellie[/name])
[name]Dora[/name] (If it weren’t for the show)
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Ida[/name]
[name]Nora[/name] is already making a comeback
[name]Gwendolyn[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] (ditto [name]Nora[/name])
[name]Edith[/name] (Maybe because of Downton [name]Abbey[/name])
[name]Florence[/name] (ditto [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name])
[name]Annie[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name] (UK again)
[name]Ethel[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name] (already coming back)
[name]Ada[/name] (actually really like this one)
I love [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Gwendolyn[/name], [name]Annie[/name] (although I prefer a longer full name), and [name]Lilian[/name] (although I prefer the more classic [name]Lillian[/name] spelling). I can appreciate [name]Ada[/name], but I much prefer something along the lines of [name]Adeline[/name], [name]Adele[/name]/[name]Adella[/name], etc.
Here are ones that I think will be popular soon by the general public:
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name] (Already rising and is at 266)
[name]Nellie[/name] (I see this in the UK but in the US as a nickname)
[name]Minnie[/name] (As a nickname)
[name]Constance[/name] (Possibly)
[name]Ida[/name] (We have [name]Ava[/name], which leads to [name]Ada[/name], so why not [name]Ida[/name]?)
[name]Esther[/name]
[name]Nora[/name]
[name]Bessie[/name] (As a nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name])
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Annie[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name] (Is already popular as [name]Lillian[/name])
[name]Ada[/name] (The next logical successor to [name]Ava[/name])
The others I can only see being used by us berries or those who want to honor a relative. [name]Dora[/name] is cute, but the show pretty much killed its use.
I can also see [name]Mavis[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]Louise[/name], [name]Mae[/name] and [name]Vera[/name] coming back.
I like [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Gwendolyn[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Nellie[/name] or [name]Nell[/name]. I think [name]Nell[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], and [name]Matilda[/name] are my favorites and it appears as though [name]Matilda[/name] is already rising in popularity pretty fast.
In my area [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Lilian[/name] are already back, I know at least 2 of each and 4 young [name]Elise[/name]'s (I have three kids so I know a lot of young people). The names from you list I’d like to see comeback include [name]Nellie[/name], [name]Ada[/name] and my favorite from your list [name]Florence[/name].
My favorites:
Mabel
Esther
Nora
Irene
Miriam
Edith
Lilian
Names I could see making a comeback:
Mabel - very hip, and I’ve actually come across at least one young Mabel recently.
Ivy - already making a comeback
Frances - especially if people can use it with the boyish nickname Frankie.
Ida - if Ava made it, why can’t Ada and Ida?
Esther - I hope so!
Nora - already making a comeback
Irene - very cool, and a nice alternative too Iris who’s also making a comeback.
Gwendolyn - not sure why, but this one just makes sense as a comeback.
Miriam - love this one! Miri is definitely fresh and charming as a nickname, so maybe people will use Miriam as a full name? And the supposed meaning “wished-for child” is really great.
Matilda - from what I’ve seen, Matilda is already experiencing a comeback in Australia/UK, but I live in the US and I haven’t heard any here.
Edith - Downton Abbey? Definitely worth noticing.
Florence - especially with the floral trend/Flora as a nickname, I could see this start to rise.
Annie - sweet and simple. I could see it happening.
Lilian - already making a comeback with Lily.
Ada - especially after Ava.
Names I’m not as sure about:
Nellie - perhaps as a nickname, but probably not a full name.
Minnie - again, I think this could catch on as a nickname but not a full name.
Maud - a little too harsh, I think. Mabel might be more attractive.
Dora - ruined by the show, unless it’s a nickname for Theodora
Constance - still kind of dowdy in my opinion, but maybe it’s fresh for other people
Bessie - reminds many people I know of cows. I think Betsy could work, though.
Blanche - not a fan of the nasally sound, and Golden Girls still has reruns…
Millicent - maybe? I see Matilda becoming more popular.
Elsie - same problem as Bessie.
Dorothy - Wizard of Oz? great name, but not sure how much people love it where I live.
Ethel - yes it’s Downton Abbey, but when people talk about DA, nobody (that I know) mentions a love for Ethel’s name. feels heavy even though it shouldn’t, especially with the e s and l s.
Doris - similar to Dora, but doesn’t have a nice “a” ending that’s so popular.
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name] - already rising in popularity
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Ida[/name] - popular in Scandinavia
[name]Esther[/name]
[name]Nora[/name] - rising in popularity
[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Gwendolyn[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Edith[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Annie[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Dorothy[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name]
[name]Ada[/name]
Names Still on the Fence…
[name]Nellie[/name] - I guess people don’t realize that this is a derogatory term for an effeminate man.
[name]Ethel[/name] - a little too old-fashioned even for me
[name]Dora[/name] - the [name]Explorer[/name]?
[name]Doris[/name] - too clunky
[name]Minnie[/name] - The Mouse still reigns supreme!
[name]Blanche[/name] - sounds like something you do when you feel nauseous. Now if you pronounce it the French way, it’s beautiful!
[name]Bessie[/name] - still sounds like a name for a cow (along with [name]Elsie[/name] but [name]Elsie[/name] is all the rage in the UK)
[name]Maud[/name] - I love this name but it doesn’t get much love (even here on Nameberry).
[name]Nellie[/name] - I can definitely see this being used as a nickname again, but not a full name.
[name]Mabel[/name] - I can’t see it being used but I kind of like it.
[name]Ivy[/name] - I definitely think this will appear more.
[name]Frances[/name] - I’ve been noticing it in the middle name spot often.
[name]Minnie[/name] - I don’t think it will be used but it’s cute.
[name]Maud[/name] - I don’t think so.
[name]Dora[/name] - Not with [name]Dora[/name] the [name]Explorer[/name] around.
[name]Constance[/name] - I don’t think so.
[name]Ida[/name] - Maybe but probably not.
[name]Esther[/name] - Possibly. I like it.
[name]Nora[/name] - Definitely. I’ve been seeing it often.
[name]Irene[/name] - I don’t think so.
[name]Bessie[/name] - Probably not.
[name]Gwendolyn[/name] - Maybe.
[name]Blanche[/name] - Probably not.
[name]Miriam[/name] - Probably not.
[name]Matilda[/name] - Definitely.
[name]Millicent[/name] - No.
[name]Edith[/name] - Probably not.
[name]Florence[/name] - Probably not.
[name]Annie[/name] - I hope so, but I doubt it.
[name]Elsie[/name] - Maybe.
[name]Dorothy[/name] - I think so, eventually.
[name]Ethel[/name] - No.
[name]Doris[/name] - No.
[name]Lilian[/name] - Absolutely.
[name]Ada[/name] - Yes.
I love [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Ethel[/name], [name]Ada[/name], [name]Lilian[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Florence[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Bessie[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Constance[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name]. I really hope they don’t make a comeback - I want them to remain unpopular!
I don’t like most old lady names, but the ones I do like from your list are:
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name]
I really can’t stand names like [name]Esther[/name], [name]Millicent[/name], [name]Ida[/name], [name]Nora[/name], [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Ethel[/name]. I don’t see the appealat all.
[name]Nell[/name] will, not [name]Nellie[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name] has - it is becoming popular with celebrities
[name]Ivy[/name] will because of [name]Blue[/name] [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Beyonce[/name] and [name]Jay[/name]-Z’s daughter
[name]Frances[/name] as a mn, yes…probably not as popular as a fn
[name]Minnie[/name] - probably will in the UK
[name]Maud[/name] - maybe, it seems likely that hipsters would chose it
[name]Dora[/name] the [name]Explorer[/name] is still well known, maybe in another decade
[name]Constance[/name] - meh, I don’t think so
[name]Ida[/name] - same as above
[name]Esther[/name] - maybe, but I think [name]Hester[/name] might instead and [name]Estelle[/name]
[name]Nora[/name] - a Nameberry fave
[name]Irene[/name] - Yes!
[name]Bessie[/name] - [name]Bess[/name], yes
[name]Gwendolyn[/name] - probably just [name]Gwen[/name]
[name]Blanche[/name] - no
[name]Miriam[/name] - yes
[name]Matilda[/name] - a celebrity used it, so yes
[name]Millicent[/name] - maybe, to get the nn [name]Millie[/name]
[name]Edith[/name] - yes, because of Downton [name]Abbey[/name] - I think [name]Edie[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] will be popular in the UK
[name]Florence[/name] - yes, as a mn
[name]Annie[/name] - yes - I love [name]Annie[/name]!
[name]Elsie[/name] - already popular in the UK, I believe
[name]Dorothy[/name] - yes, I think it could be, [name]Dorothea[/name] too
[name]Ethel[/name] - not likely in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name], but maybe in the UK since [name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name] chose it
[name]Doris[/name] - no, never
[name]Lillian[/name] - already has, hasn’t it?
[name]Ada[/name] - same as above
Favorites:
Minnie, Irene, Annie, Dorothy, Lillian, Miriam (nn Mim) and Ada. I like Bess, but not Bessie
[name]Matilda[/name], [name]Nellie[/name], and [name]Nora[/name] are definetly going to raise. [name]Matilda[/name] especially is going to be a dramatic rise this year!
