[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - I absolutely love this, it’s my favourite name for a girl. I think that the nickname options make it very versatile - [name_f]Winny[/name_f], [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] (I’d totally use this as a nickname), [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] etc.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this as well. It has a very elegant sound.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - I think this has a very clean sound.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - I’m not a big fan of the J sound, and although this has a somewhat heavy and clunky sound to me, I think it has an elegant vibe.
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] - I’m not very keen on the BL sound, but the Y and TH make up for it.
[name_f]Elfrida[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - Prefer [name_f]Louise[/name_f] or [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f].
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] - A bit too cute for me.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t really like LM in names. I have an LM name, and I’ve never liked it.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] on a boy. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t like [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] on a girl.
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - I think this has a rather awkward sound.
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - I don’t think this has a very attractive sound at all. I’m not so keen on the P sound. It’s a shame, because I think the name image is beautiful.
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] – I’m kind of on the fence with this one. It sounds cool, but I hate the nn [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and I feel it’s inevitable. Would make a cool middle name, though.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] – Really like it with the nn ‘[name_f]Edie[/name_f]’.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] – Meh. I want to like it because of personal associations and the bible story, but I think I prefer [name_f]Hadassah[/name_f]. [name_f]Essie[/name_f] is a nice nn.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] – I don’t like it. It just sounds harsh and always reminds me of fluorescent (maybe because I’m a foreigner, lol).
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] – Pretty and feminine.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] – [name_f]Viola[/name_f] means ‘rape’ in Spanish which is spoken by many members of my family, therefore I would never use it. It has an attractive sound, but that association ruins it completely for me.
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] – Pretty and whimsical. Like the nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]!
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] – Want to like it, but I don’t know…
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] – No… I don’t know why, but this name always makes me think about cows.
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] – [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it.
[name_f]Elfrida[/name_f] – I much prefer [name_f]Elvira[/name_f].
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] – Nice, but a bit harsh.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] – [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! I have [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Lilou[/name_f]’ on my list.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] – It’s okay. Not my favourite.
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] – [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it.
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] – [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it.
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – Cool and spunky name.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] – A bit over-the-top.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] – NMS
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] – Nice middle, don’t like it as much for a first name.
Ranking these, I’ll try to give my “guilty pleasure” names their due, without shame.
Names I would consider using:
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] - my longtime gp name, for numerous lovely reasons.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - my favourite Bible story is of [name_f]Esther[/name_f].
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - when I was a child I had a friend named [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], who I always called [name_f]Edith[/name_f] for some reason. She didn’t mind, and neither did anyone else, I was never corrected, though I tried not to keep saying it, but it always came out, and there is something so pleasant about this memory of being permitted to change someone’s name.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - I think this name is so pretty. [name_m]Just[/name_m] very pretty. It reminds me of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. I also like [name_f]Maybelle[/name_f].
[name_f]Elfrida[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Elfrieda[/name_f]) - I’ve always loved how this name has ‘Elf’ in it. Because I have pointy ears, I’ve been called Elf and [name_f]Elfie[/name_f] from time to time.
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - my dad’s name is [name_m]George[/name_m], and I think it’s beautiful. [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f] is my favourite ‘[name_m]George[/name_m]’ name.
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - I’ve worn my opal necklace since I was 10 years old.
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - although it’s a bit heavy, I also think it has a musical sound.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - I love everything about the name [name_f]Florence[/name_f], except that I detest the nn [name_f]Flo[/name_f].
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - I love the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but don’t care much for [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_u]Winn[/name_u], which sounds like a man’s name. I think [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is dignified, though, overall.
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] - a distinct sounding and simple name, that has the adorable nn [name_f]Dora[/name_f] built in.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - I just like the way this name looks on the page, I always have. I think it’s a sensible name that wears well, and it’s also distinct, even though [name_f]Henriette[/name_f] has a similar sound, the way I say it.
Names I wouldn’t use:
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - this is a lovely name, but not for me.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - when I love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] so much, why bother with [name_f]Viola[/name_f]?
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] - this has no substance.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - there was a dog on my street growing up named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and she bit.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - I always see the male name [name_m]Louis[/name_m] first whenever I hear this name, and I don’t care for the ‘wee’ sound.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - with [name_m]French[/name_m] as my first language, I can’t read this name as anything but ‘tell-ma’.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - it just weighs a ton.
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] - this seems like the kind of name that [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m] City socialites give their daughters. A nice meaning but I don’t care for the sound.
I usually hate old fashioned names so my comments will probably be rather negative, I in no means want to offend anybody!
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], but its one of the older names I actually like. I love the nickname [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] on a little girl!
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - Not a fan, I cant see it coming back
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - I used to hate it but it has grown on me. I dislike the way it looks though and would probably spell it [name_f]Esta[/name_f].
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - dislike
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - really dont like it.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - Pretty, subtle and feminine. I could see this one being used nowadays
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] - its okay, it appears a little made up
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - dislike, its too much like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], though I do prefer it over [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - ugly!
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] - a little odd for me
[name_f]Elfrida[/name_f] - oh no, just gross
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I dont really see it as an old fashioned name!
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - just boring
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f] - too outdated
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - very outdated and ugly
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Its so unique!
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - I certainly wouldnt count this as an oldie name. Its pretty though.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - dislike, its too much like the boys [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - dislike it but thats just due to associations
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] - really ugly
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f]-dislike
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]-okay
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]- cute
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]- prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]-dislike
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]- like
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]- like, especially as a middle name
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]- dislike
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]- like
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]- indifferent, don’t really care for it
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f]- Pronouncitaion issues, not my fave
[name_f]Elfrida[/name_f]-really dislike
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]- like
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]- like, I prefer [name_f]Louise[/name_f] as a middle name for [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f]- to old sounding for me
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]- dislike, I prefer [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], or Wilhemena
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]-dislike
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - Okay. I prefer Gorgiana (jor-[name_f]JANE[/name_f]-uh)
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]-dislike
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]- Like
My favorites: Wilhemena, [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], Gorgiana, [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], and the nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] (which I want to use for [name_u]Meredith[/name_u])
You have some good names, I’m just really sensitive to the dated feel of some. I wish I wasn’t, older names have a lot of potential. Have fun with them!
