Olive or Amelie? Baby girl due in two months

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,

Which do you prefer of these two and why?

My partner is pretty set on [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], a name we’ve had as an option for awhile now and both love (I also adore the film so the association is a good one) but I want two options to take to the hospital and the remaining possibility he’s approved of alongside [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is [name_f]Olive[/name_f] (nickname Oli).

I probably love both equally so it’s a tough decision. I am concerned though that [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is on the rise; here in Australia it’s in the top 100, jumping from the 100th spot last year to 79 for 2019.

What do you think? I personally haven’t come across any Amelies [name_m]IRL[/name_m] or on social media whereas I’ve come across quite a few little Olives either through word of mouth (people I know meeting little girls called [name_f]Olive[/name_f]) and on social media.

So I guess what I’m asking is a) Does popularity bother you? and b) irrespective of popularity, which would you choose?

Thanks

Tough choice because both are lovely. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is so vintage - cute yet mature and versatile with the nn Ollie. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is so vibrant, sleek yet fun. I haven’t met any Olives though I have heard of a couple whereas I have met and also heard of a few Amelies.

Popularity does bother me a little but neither of these are too popular to me. I’d probably choose [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] simply because I like it just a fraction more -its so sweet yet elegant

Popularity bothers me personally. I don’t mind a common well established name. I wouldn’t want a trendy name or a name
above the top 100.

I would choose [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. First of all because I like it more, I think it’s beautiful, classic and timeless.
While [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is cute, but not my cup of tea. I may be wrong, but it feels trendy to me.

I have an [name_f]Olive[/name_f] so I would choose [name_f]Olive[/name_f] Haha

I also have [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] on my long list!

Popularity does matter to me and was the only thing that had influenced me against [name_f]Olive[/name_f] during my pregnancy(in NZ it is number 50 - 70 something girls were given the name so not a HUGE amount however)
I would worry with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] that people would assume it is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is number 4 in Australia.

What I love about [name_f]Olive[/name_f]- its sound, cute but not cutesy, peaceful/ nature vibes, suits a range of ages and “types” and that it is vintage
Both are lovely names! Take them both with you to the hospital and one of them will feel right. (We had [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Macy[/name_f] on our hospital list and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] just fitted her perfectly!)

All the best!

I love both but I do prefer [name_f]Olive[/name_f] personally

I would personally choose [name_f]Olive[/name_f]! It’s my top girls name! Maybe keep [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] for another child?

Thanks for your suggestions/opinions everyone, I really appreciate it! It’s such a hard decision, I wish I knew which I prefer but I just don’t. Any further thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Popularity does both me a lot but in saying that, I’ve never met nor heard of an [name_f]Olive[/name_f] in these parts (QLD) so I’m not sure it’s rising all too much. It may depend also on the area you live in, as many names on the charts (particularly 50-100) here I’ve found can often be quite regional.

Regardless of popularity, I prefer [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] – she’s just so sweet and romantic and playful and classy. I like the idea of agreeing on two names to decide between when baby’s here though, so try not to stress on which is best just yet. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] really is lovely too, and I think Olive and Amelie are different enough in style, that once bub’s here, you might find one fits her so much better than the other.

I like both of them, but I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f].

Both of these names feel quite different to me, but if you like them equally and are worried about popularity, I would go for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] as long as you have considered issues you may run into with it being confused with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f].

Popularity bothers me more than I’d like and I only let it onto our shortlist when I was 30 weeks pregnant as I saw it had dropped out of the Aus Top 100…Lo and behold we went with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] as it was my partner’s favourite of our three choices and it’s now it’s back in the Top 100 as you know. I must say I was a little disappointed, and we have heard of a few other [name_f]Olive[/name_f]’s, though only one other born in 2018…I wouldn’t be surprised if [name_f]Olive[/name_f] was to rise in next year’s Top 100.

@bretak Your daughter’s name is beautiful, what a lovely combination of names!

I really like both names, so I think you’ll be fine either way

For me, knowing the surname (or at least number of syllables and starting letter) is important, because sometimes one name flows better than the other. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is quite soft, with 3 syllables. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] has a harder sound, with 2 syllables. If you had a surname like [name_m]King[/name_m], for example, I would choose [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. For a name like [name_m]Sanderson[/name_m], I would choose [name_f]Olive[/name_f].

Good luck!

Popularity has never bothered me one way or another to be honest. I like something that I feel stands out, but where I live, names like [name_f]Athena[/name_f] are everywhere, while something like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is less commonly heard nowadays (both are top 20 names here).

I don’t look at national popularity to gauge whether or not I use a name, I look locally. What names do I hear my niece talking about when she mentions her first-grade classmates? What do I hear moms yelling in the park across the street? Things like that seem like a much better way to gauge than using a bunch of statistics. I really just look at the list for ideas and for comparative purposes.

That being said, typically I prefer [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] but I’d be concerned about confusion with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is pretty distinct, and while it’s similar to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], I feel like it’s much less likely to be mistaken for it.

I would choose [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if she does end up as one of two in her class - is it really that bad?

Of the two, I like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] better. It’s sweet, but can be mature as well. I think it works well on a child as well as an adult.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] makes me think of Popeye’s girlfriend.

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] is so cute. I don’t really like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], I much prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I’d go with [name_f]Olive[/name_f]!

I know tonnes of Amelies and Olivias, but never met an [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. I love both names but would go with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] if I were you Xx

[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] are so beautiful! Those are wonderful names! And great alternatives to overused [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Popularity doesn’t really bother me, unless the name is on top25.
My favorite name is [name_f]Olive[/name_f]! It’s very sweet, modern and fresh. I’m sure your baby will have a stunning name, whatever you pick.
