Olive?

[name]Olive[/name] is currently the front-runner for our little girl due in [name]November[/name] but anyone I’ve ever asked about the name seems to hate it! [name]Even[/name] berries, who I usually share my name taste with, seem not to like it. My dh and I love it because it symbolizes peace and life, but it sounds spunky and has the cute nn [name]Liv[/name]. Seems not too popular but not too out there, which we like too but I’m wondering other’s thoughts. Is giving [name]Olive[/name] to a little girl an awful thing to do as some have suggested to me? Any parents of Olives out there? What type of reactions have you gotten to the name?

Thank you!

[name]LOVE[/name] IT

I would have considered it for my daughter due in [name]September[/name] but my husband can’t shake the Popeye reference lol

What would you have as a mn?

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Olive[/name]. It’s quaint, spunky, adaptable, just gorgeous. [name]Don[/name]'t be swayed by others opinions if you love the name - they will love it once it’s on your little girl, as they will associate it with her. Stick with it! Also, it’s definitely getting more popular - so it’s not so different that people will raise their eyebrows like they might with older names like [name]Ethel[/name] or [name]Edna[/name] or [name]Gladys[/name]. (And [name]Olive[/name] is a hundred times more beautiful than those names!)

I don’t like it since it just reminds me of [name]Olive[/name] Garden and [name]Ollie[/name] [name]Olive[/name]. I can also see teasing potential in the “[name]Olive[/name] you” phrase. I personally don’t like many word names though, mainly because I can just picture the word, so if someone named their kid olive, I’d picture her to be green and maybe a vegetarian… just like I hate the name [name]Sailor[/name] because i get an image of pop eye or a man in a sailor suit.

I’m not a fan because I just picture a green olive sitting there on a plate. Or olive green, which is not a colour I like. I also don’t think it has a pretty sound, so the overall image is one of drabness.

That’s just me, though; I think you’ll find most people on here like it, and a friend of mine has just used it and had good reactions.

I think its really cute, a vintage name that is very underused at the moment. Unfortunatly DH has his heart set on [name]Oliver[/name] for a future son, so I can’t really do [name]Olive[/name] too. If you love it, go for it!

I’m sorry, I really, really dislike this name and I just don’t get the love for it. Like pp, it just makes me think of olives sitting on a plate. It’s also not a pretty sound. [name]Olivia[/name] I like; I wouldn’t choose it since it’s so popular, but if [name]Liv[/name] is what you’re going for, I would strongly recommend that over [name]Olive[/name]. Obviously this is my opinion and plenty of people seem to like the name, but every time I hear [name]Olive[/name] as a name I get physically nauseated so I just feel like I had to say something. It also just sounds masculine to me.

That being said I think [name]Liv[/name] is charming. Good luck!!

hehe it reminds me of [name]Olive[/name] Oil, ‘‘Help me Popeye!! help me!!’’

But f it weren’t for that I would think it very pretty, its elegant and unique but not unusual!

I think its really pretty! Go for it!

I love it!

I’ve had [name]Olivia[/name] on my list for the longest time–I love its sweetness, its Shakespearean references, and the sweet nn [name]Liv[/name]–and then I fell for [name]Olive[/name], and I nearly swapped [name]Olive[/name] out for [name]Olivia[/name], but as a writer and a lover of literature (especially [name]Shakespeare[/name]!), I just couldn’t bear to lose the Shakespearean references, so I opted for [name]Olivia[/name] nn [name]Olive[/name] (and just [name]Liv[/name]!). I do love the vintage charm of [name]Olive[/name], and that it has most of the nns [name]Olivia[/name] still has, and how natural it is. I think it’s great.

I agree, I’m curious to see if you have a MN yet! [name]Olive[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Olive[/name] [name]Lenora[/name] were a few ideas I’ve been tossing around…

Good luck!

I don’t like olives at all. They are not pretty to look at or anything. It’s not a word like [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Violet[/name], or a word name after something pretty. Why name your daughter after an ugly, slimy thing? The association is too strong. I’m sure that when people get to know her and get used to using the name, they won’t automatically think of the food, though. It would just be an issue with first impressions.

Thanks for everyone’s opinions! I think I’m struck by how strongly people feel about the name - those that don’t like it seem to hate it and I just don’t want to saddle my daughter with a name that people think is horrible. I’m surprised so many people just think of an olive on a plate! I definitely think of the olive tree when I hear the name, which is a beautiful tree and has biblical and historical significance. I do happen to really like eating olives so maybe that helps, too.

For middle names, we’re likely to use a family name. We’ve been talking about [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], or [name]Lucille[/name], though we both really like [name]Olive[/name] [name]Annabel[/name] even though [name]Annabel[/name] isn’t a family name. If we went with a name other than [name]Olive[/name] I’d love to use my grandmother’s name as a middle, but her name was [name]Hazel[/name] and I think [name]Olive[/name] [name]Hazel[/name] would be a green overkill! [name]Hazel[/name] is still in the running for FN along with a couple of other names, but [name]Olive[/name] is our favorite right now. Let me know if others have [name]Olive[/name] MN suggestions (or more opinions on the name [name]Olive[/name]). I love the suggestions of [name]Olive[/name] [name]Juliet[/name].

[name]Love[/name] nature names but [name]Olive[/name] is one I only tolerate. I just think it’s an unattractive sound. [name]Oliver[/name] is nice, [name]Olivia[/name] is nice, and I’ve known ladies named Olivie “oh-la-vee” and Olivae “oh-la-vay” and I love their names

Many don’t know that the Mt. of Olives’ name is actually Mount [name]Olivet[/name]. [name]Olivet[/name] is a pretty name

I actually like the name. I know someone who recently named her daughter [name]Olive[/name].
It does make me think of [name]Olive[/name] Oil and of olives, but I don’t find either to be negative connections.
It surprises me how many people hate it!

I adore the nickname [name]Livy[/name]
And I have positive memories of my grandpa related to olives so that might be part of it.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Olive[/name]. I would have seriously considered it, but a neighbor has a daughter named [name]Olivia[/name]. Boo!

My advice is go for it! You can’t please everyone when you are naming a child.

I too would love to hear your mn ideas.

i know a little girl called [name]Olive[/name] and she is just adorable!
As soon as you name your little one [name]Olive[/name], people are going to think about her when they hear the name and not about anything else!
By all means, try to find more names that you and DH agree on, but [name]Olive[/name] is a good choice and i wouldn’t let other people’s opinions (who knows, maybe they love Jaylynnya (or something)) get in the way of that!

I love, love, love [name]Olive[/name].
Since my last name sounds terrible with it, I was thinking about naming my puppy that. However, I found out one of my best friends was contemplating naming her future daughter that so I didn’t do it. I love short, spunky yet classy names for girls.

[name]Olive[/name] [name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Olive[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Olive[/name] [name]Margot[/name]
[name]Olive[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]

I love [name]Olive[/name]. I think of the pretty yet tragic silent film star, [name]Olive[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] first. Then [name]Olive[/name] Oyle. I don’t think either are negative. If you love the name you should use it.
