My son is named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and we are considering [name_u]August[/name_u] for baby boy #2, but am wondering if it is too close in sound to [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. Written out they are obviously quite different, but the similar first sound has me a little wary. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] mostly goes by his full name, but sometimes [name_u]Ollie[/name_u], and we would likely call [name_u]August[/name_u] by his full name or [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. I am also little concerned with the rising popularity of [name_u]August[/name_u]-- it is still nowhere near the popularity of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] but looks like it might head in that direction. I still love [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] despite the sudden increase in popularity, so that might not deter me either way. Please let me know what you thing or if you have any other suggestions!
I love the names [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u] so much, but I have to agree that they sound very similar. That being said, [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] are about the cutest together I can think of. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with choosing the name [name_u]August[/name_u] as long as you aren’t going to go with a NN like [name_m]Augie[/name_m] – it’s just way too close to [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and they will get confused. What is it about [name_u]August[/name_u] that you love? Is it the word or the sound? The meaning, the history of the name? The month and the connotations it brings? Etc. Maybe if you want something else try to pin down what you like about [name_u]August[/name_u] the most.

I don’t think they are too close and I love [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] but if you’re worried you could use [name_m]Angus[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u] or [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. My uncle’s name is [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] but he’s gone by [name_u]Gus[/name_u] his whole life.

I don’t think they are too close in any way, nor do I think that popularity should be a deterrent especially with the nicknames you chose. They go beautifully together both stylistically and sound-wise. I wouldn’t think anything of it if I met a pair of brothers named [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] (in fact I would appreciate the wonderful name choices). I think you should go for it.
