Oliver and Mateo?

My 2.5yo DS is named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I am due with baby #2 in [name_u]July[/name_u], but don’t know the gender yet. It was very easy for me to think of boy names last time but impossible to find a girl name, but I ended up having a boy so that was fine. Now, it’s the other way around! I just want to have a boy name I like before finding out what the gender is. The only name DH and I have both agreed on is [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], which I love, but I’m not sure if it sounds like it’d be a sibling for [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].

In the end, I don’t know how much I really care, but I am curious how others feel about it as a sib-set.

For the record: DH is a medley of hispanic ethnicities and I am very ghostly caucasian. Our son is darker than me and fairer than DH, the perfect combo of us both! DH picked out [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and I agreed to it. This time, I picked out [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] and DH agreed to it. Although I find the two names to be differing in ethnic background, they actually do represent both ethnic groups that our children are, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

Our last name starts with a P and ends in an “ah” sound, very hispanic sounding. Middle name is most likely going to be [name_m]Felix[/name_m], but that is certainly not 100% yet.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] go together as brothers? Or do they just sound like friends that met at school?

I’m actually really into these names as brothers. The idea of [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is adorable to me. Both [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] trisyllabic and iambic (I believe… I’m not the best with metrical feet to be honest, but I’m pretty sure I can hear it here), so they definitely match in ways other than ethnically. [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] would be a really sweet combo.

My family is Italian and Dutch so, though both mine and my sister’s first names are generic western names, my middle name reflects the Dutch side whereas my sister’s middle name is very Italian. I was jealous of my sister’s name growing up because it’s gorgeous and way more glamorous than mine (I adore Italian names), but I love the idea of children’s names reflecting their parents’ cultures and appreciate my parents’ decision to do that for us.

You could go the middle name route like my parents did, if that will help with how they sound together. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] would be pretty good brothers too, and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] sounds nice. But, if it doesn’t really matter to you in the end, stick with [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], especially if you love it.

I think they sound great together. I know a very blond boy no Hispanic background names [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] but he goes by [name_m]Teo[/name_m] ([name_u]Tay[/name_u]-oh) no one questions it. Go for it

I wouldn’t bat an eye at [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Mateo[/name_m]. I think they make for a handsome sibset. I, too, have a hispanic surname that starts with P and ends in an “ah” sound!

I like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] too! [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is fantastic.
