As I find myself in the very early stages of #3 pregnancy (yay!), we are now down to talking names again. Girl names we are pretty consistent, but boys names…well, I just can’t grab anything I love now that #3 is more a reality.
So the only two we have remote agreement on is [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name]. My husband prefers [name]Oliver[/name], I am more for [name]Oscar[/name]. I still quite like [name]Leo[/name] as well but hubby not keen. Also, as middle name it’s now leaning towards [name]Simon[/name] (my husbands name) but I still want [name]Weston[/name] (as my maiden name is [name]West[/name]), but hubby is now off it as he thinks it doesn’t match and is too “trendy”.
Names we have discarded - [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Charlie[/name], [name]Alfred[/name], [name]Archie[/name].
So [name]Oscar[/name] or [name]Oliver[/name]??? I live in Aus and [name]Oliver[/name] is popular here (think its #5) but two friends (not day to day friends) have had recent boys called [name]Oscar[/name]. Our last name sounds like Cook (with a T )
Any other ideas?? My preference is a 2 syllable names like our other two children and nothing that sounds similar (eg. I chucked [name]Charlie[/name] as I didn’t want another “eeee” sounding end like [name]Harry[/name]). Also, our taste is very much classic and straightforward. Unfortunately, we have a large circle of family and friends and many names would be a double up…
I would go for [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Simon[/name] or [name]Oscar[/name] [name]West[/name] if I was in your position. [name]Oscar[/name] fits so well with [name]Alice[/name] & [name]Harry[/name]! If you’re not seeing these friends all the time then I don’t think it’s much of a problem. This would be your little boy’s name for the rest of his life; your friends may come and go. [name]Weston[/name] is trendy- I think [name]West[/name] is fine on its own and much more handsome.
[name]Oscar[/name] [name]West[/name] is smashing. [name]Oliver[/name] [name]West[/name] is another good one. [name]Both[/name] go nicely with [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Harry[/name].
Thank you charlieandperry. I really love your analysis of my problem! You know, my husband would probably be more keen on just [name]West[/name] to reflect my side of the family so I will definitely raise it with him. I love all your classic names. Unfortunately, many are already family names or very close friends kids names (particularly friends we have known since we were teenagers!). I wish i could get my husband to like [name]Jasper[/name] or [name]Felix[/name] but he vetoed those ones ages ago. If we had a different surname, I would love [name]Thomas[/name] (or [name]Tom[/name]) but I think [name]Tom[/name] Took would be just too much
I do agree, [name]Alice[/name], [name]Harry[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] have a nice (and literary) flow to them
Thanks [name]Brigid[/name]. As much as we try to find other names we keep in coming back to these two “O” names! [name]Do[/name] you think [name]West[/name] as a middle name suits our sibset names better than [name]Weston[/name]??
I love [name]Oliver[/name] (we are also considering this name). I have 2 friends with dogs named [name]Oscar[/name], so it is hard for me to separate lol. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]West[/name] for a middle regardless of the name. I feel like if it has strong meaning then it trumps flow.
Thanks for your comments roblyn. My husband will be happy you chose [name]Oliver[/name]!!! My grandfathers name is [name]Rex[/name] and while I would love to use it…I know 3 dogs named [name]Rex[/name]! Associating names with animals is a deal breaker to me too ;). I too think meaning trumps flow. Thanks for reminding me of the importance of that!
I think it was just a coincidence they just happen to be ‘O’ names. I just told my husband your two suggestions and he rolled his eyes at me - “[name]Otto[/name] Took well he won’t need to learn too many letters to spell his name”. Having a last name of Took does throw off some names. [name]Oliver[/name] is definitely my hubby’s #1 pick.
I like [name]Oliver[/name] [name]West[/name] or [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Simon[/name]. That way if he gets his first pick for a first name, you get yours for a middle name and vice versa.
Other ideas:
[name]Milo[/name] or [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Elliott[/name]
[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Walter[/name]
[name]Graham[/name]
I also prefer [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Simon[/name] or [name]Oliver[/name] [name]West[/name]. I personally do not see the appeal of [name]Oscar[/name]. I don’t think I will ever be able to see past [name]Oscar[/name] the Grouch.
SO similar to my girl thread about [name]Celia[/name] and [name]Imogen[/name], I have had a big division about peoples preference to [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]. And also the middle name…I’m still so torn. Still 8ish months to decide…but I’ll be back for more opinions!!
I like [name]West[/name] better than [name]Weston[/name]. [name]Oliver[/name] [name]West[/name], [name]Oscar[/name] [name]West[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Simon[/name] are all nice. My preference would be [name]Oscar[/name] [name]West[/name]. Matches really well with your sibset.
If [name]Weston[/name] feels too trendy, how about [name]Westley[/name] as the middle name? It’s similarity to [name]Wesley[/name] works really well with your other children’s names, and both [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Westley[/name] or [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Westley[/name] are darling
Mmmm…not sure in this one. We have a [name]Wesley[/name] in the family (my Dads wife’s son) who died when he was 15. I think the link with [name]Wesley[/name] would be too big. But I am leaning to thinking that [name]Weston[/name] is too trendy for my kidlets whereas [name]West[/name] (being my actual maiden name) would work just as well.
Definitely understand your hesitance with [name]Westley[/name] in that case - much too close for comfort. And [name]West[/name] is still a great choice, works well with either name.
