not pregnant but recently I’ve really developed a crush on this name. I know it’s very [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] but does that make it completely unusable? To me it feels like an old-fashioned, buttoned up version of [name]Oliver[/name], which I find charming. So what do you guys think, usable or still too tied to [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]?
I certainly see the appeal, but I think its better suited in the middle.
I [name]LOVE[/name] Ollivander! I don’t think it being a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] name makes it unusable at all. I like it for the first or middle name.
I like Olivera during my last pregnancy and this name reminds me of that. I think it’s just a bit long for my taste…and I’d be concerned that only nicknames would be used because of the length.
Ollivander is a real surname, JK didn’t make it up so I’d say it’s as usable as any other surname.
I really like it but prefer Olivander
This would be my guess as well, especially since it’s a name a lot of people would be unfamiliar with.
[name]Every[/name] person on the planet who has read [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] or watched those awful movies will know Mr Ollivander.
If I met a kid called Ollivander I would laugh (inside my head of course, I’m not awful ). It’s so ridiculously [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fangirly that I can’t take it seriously at all.
It sounds nice, but it is too long plus [name]Evander[/name]-smushed-with-[name]Oliver[/name] (as non-HP fans would see it) in my opinion. But if you do use it, I think the spelling Olivander is nicer, and similar to Oleander.
Oleander is awesome! it’s a tree with poisionous leaves
[name]Every[/name] one s first thought has been [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]… Mine was too…
I like the name, and if it weren’t for [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] it would be completley useable [name]IMO[/name]. Most people will have only ever heard the name in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], and most people will assume you named him after the character. If Mr. Ollivander wasn’t such a well known character, or if people had another association with the name, like [name]Hermione[/name] where many people have a [name]Shakespeare[/name] association, then it would be more useable. I think the name would work as a middle name, but I can’t see it as a first name.
The [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] nerd in me loves it, but it feels a bit surname-y to use as a first name.
I agree that the sounds are really nice, but it’s SOOOO associated with [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] for me that I could never take it seriously. But it’s the same with [name]Remus[/name], [name]Sirius[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], [name]Severus[/name], [name]Ginevra[/name] and tons of others for me, so maybe I’m not the best one to ask. I’m a gigantic [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fan (my phone has had the HP ringtone for almost a decade).
Exactly this. I was going to say it sounds so much like the plant Oleander that I would consider using that instead.
I want to say yes, since I love [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. I have to say no, though, because of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name].
I love [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], and there are so many names from the series that I would love to use! Sigh. The only one I was considering for real was [name]Luna[/name] though. I actually prefer Ollivander over [name]Oliver[/name] or [name]Evander[/name], but the connection to [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] would still make it unusable as a first name for me. Although it makes me sad to say it. If I could have my way, I would rather meet children named [name]Severus[/name], Ollivander, [name]Remus[/name], [name]Bellatrix[/name] etc than [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Makayla[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name], etc.
There are lots of HP names I think are useable ([name]Harry[/name], [name]Fred[/name] or [name]George[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], and even more unusual ones like [name]Minerva[/name] or [name]Ginevra[/name]). But the ones whose (nearly) only use was in HP I find too strongly associated. Ollivander would be one of the latter.
Then I guess you’d be laughing at my son. His name is Ollivander- [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] for short.
I like Ollivander, I love Olivander nn Ender or [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]. It was a toss up for me between [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] ans Olivander [name_m]Ethan[/name_m]. I think it’s interesting and hey if [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is becoming usable because of it (I know 2), then Ollivander which is very similar to popular [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], I think it’s very usable.
