So we found out this morning we’re having our third boy. I’m so pleased he’s gorgeous and healthy although I must have wanted a girl a little more than I had thought… still processing how I feel.
So this leads me to names!
We already have a [name]Felix[/name] and a [name]Theodore[/name] and I have the following list:
[name]Augustin[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) [name]Reuben[/name] [name]Christopher[/name] ([name]Kit[/name]) [name]Otto[/name] (can I have an [name]Otto[/name] and a [name]Theo[/name] though?)
These are all fabulous with the last name, which is notoriously difficult to work with.
I also really love [name]Ari[/name] but the last name ends in the ee sound and I’m not sure about a name that sounds like [name]Ari[/name] [name]Luckee[/name].
[name]Do[/name] you have more suggestions for me?
I can’t have: [name]Charlie[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]John[/name], [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], Julian, Christian, Julius or [name]Luca[/name].
I like [name]Christopher[/name] and [name]Otto[/name]! I think [name]Otto[/name] and [name]Theo[/name] is fine. [name]Theo[/name] has a full name which makes it work better.
I have mixed feelings about [name]Gus[/name] [name]Augustin[/name], but it’s my favorite of the [name]August[/name] names and it works.
[name]Reuben[/name], I dont really care for. It’s a good name with good history and I’d admire you for picking it, but, it just always makes me think of sandwiches, and it still feels really clunky to me.
I get similar vibes from…
[name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Christian[/name]
[name]Julian[/name] ([name]Felix[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], and [name]Julian[/name] just sounds great)
[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Matthias[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name] (means gift of god like [name]Theodore[/name])
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Robert[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name]
[name]Rupert[/name]
I would love [name]Julian[/name] but it’s DH’s best friend’s name - we get along, but wouldn’t name my kid after him
I really love [name]Rupert[/name] from your list - DH says no If only he didn’t have to factor into it!
We live in Australia so we don’t have the [name]Reuben[/name] sandwiches over here.
It’s looking more and more like it’s going to be [name]Christopher[/name] - I adore the nickname but not the full name so much even though it’s my dad’s name. DH’s other best friend is [name]Christian[/name] so that’s out too for a way to get to [name]Kit[/name].
Congrats on your third boy! I’m a little jealous
Your sons have awesome names. I love both!
I think your list is really good. The names on it are refreshing, intelligent, cool, and fit so well with your boys.
[name]Felix[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], and…
[name]Augustin[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) - This is my least fav of the four but only because the nickname [name]Gus[/name] is common to me (I know 2 under age five). If you don’t know any I would say go for it [name]Augustin[/name] is amazing! [name]Don[/name]'t let anyone talk you into [name]August[/name] or [name]Augustus[/name] - [name]Augustin[/name] is my favorite form.
[name]Reuben[/name] - This is MY secret special name. I would name a son this in a heartbeat. My SO hates it I will not give up hope though. I love the name [name]Reuben[/name] SO MUCH and I would love to see someone else use it. Such a great name. It really would be my #1 name if my SO didn’t have a say.
[name]Christopher[/name] ([name]Kit[/name]) - I was like “[name]Christopher[/name]”? Meh. “[name]Kit[/name]”? Nice!! [name]Christopher[/name] really doesn’t get enough love from me. It’s a beautiful name with great history and a million things to admire about it. There is so much versatility in [name]Christopher[/name], too. I might be biast because I have a cousin [name]Christopher[/name] & I knew a lot of [name]Kris[/name]'s and [name]Chris[/name]'s growing up. I [name]LOVE[/name] the nn [name]Kit[/name], though.
[name]Otto[/name] - This is my second fav! I don’t think you would have trouble having a [name]Theo[/name] and an [name]Otto[/name]. I really love [name]Otto[/name] and I think it would be so refreshing to meet one.
[name]Ari[/name] “[name]Luckee[/name]” is not really as appealing to my ear but it would bug me less if [name]Ari[/name] were short for something more substantial. [name]Andrew[/name]? [name]Adrian[/name]? [name]Alaric[/name]? [name]Aric[/name]? [name]Darian[/name]? [name]Dario[/name]? [name]Zachariah[/name]?
Thanks so much for your lovely response I’m feeling a little fragile tonight and the above has gone a long way to cheering me.
Your words about the name [name]Reuben[/name] have made me think that really is my favourite - I too feel like you about [name]Christopher[/name] which really makes me hesitate to use it even though I adore [name]Kit[/name] so much and have for years. I was pregnant earlier this year but miscarried and [name]Reuben[/name] [name]Christopher[/name] was the name I had set in stone (in my head.
Now for the mammoth task of convincing my DH! Thanks also for your list - I love [name]Caspian[/name] but DH laughs at it. I also love [name]Casper[/name] which is similar but DH says we can’t have three cartoon character names. Used to adore [name]Jasper[/name] but know a gazillion of them now. I should pop [name]Quentin[/name] back on the list too - good one.
[name]Felix[/name], [name]Theodore[/name] & [name]Otto[/name] / [name]Augustin[/name] would be perfect, and I think [name]Otto[/name] and [name]Theo[/name] work fine together.
I’m so sorry to hear about your angel baby [name]How[/name] heart breaking. hugs
I love the name [name]Reuben[/name] so, so much. I could go on and on… [name]Reuben[/name] [name]Christopher[/name] is a beautiful combo and I don’t think you should cross it off your list of considerations. It has so much special meaning to you and love wrapped up in it. That might end up being the very reason you use it with this little boy. [name]Even[/name] if you don’t use this combo again it is a beautiful, special name.
I am really glad my responce was helpful. [name]Caspian[/name] is such a gem & [name]Casper[/name] is another guilty pleasure of mine. [name]How[/name] perfect is [name]Casper[/name]? That “per” ending is divine & he’s so underused. I’m glad you liked [name]Quentin[/name], it is such a great name & I like how it matches with your other sons names. Good luck with everything!
I love [name]Reuben[/name]. Another way to get to [name]Kit[/name] would be to use [name]Christof[/name]. Actually, I really like all the names except [name]Ari[/name]. I, too, think [name]Otto[/name] is different enough from [name]Theo[/name] to work…
I like [name]Augustin[/name] too! Although, I slightly prefer [name]August[/name]. I also like [name]Christopher[/name], nn [name]Kit[/name], and [name]Quentin[/name] too :o
When my 2nd daughter was born, a nurse asked if we had any other kids at home. When I told her I had a little girl at home, she said, “Oh…you must have gotten the pink recipe. I’ve got 3 grown boys now; I had the blue recipe.” It just made me smile, and I think about that often. It sounds like you got the blue recipe too!
I really feel for you on the gender disappointment- let yourself feel it and just hold onto the fact that there may still be a little girl waiting for you in the future. It need not be said that you will love your baby to bits anyway!
So, onto the names.
Your boys names are beautiful.
As is your list!
[name]Augustin[/name] ([name]Gus[/name])- [name]Love[/name] this. Would you call him [name]Gus[/name] all the time? [name]Augustin[/name] I do like, but it seems like a lot of name. What do you think of [name]August[/name]? Might be a little easier to carry if he decides he wants a more formal name than [name]Gus[/name] at any point…?
[name]Reuben[/name]- [name]Reuben[/name] is gorgeous. [name]Just[/name] a question (I’ve named, and then lost a baby too, and hope this is okay to ask) would it bother you to use the name you prepared for a first baby on this child? I think if you’re happy with it, of course do it, but its just something to consider…
[name]Christopher[/name] ([name]Kit[/name])- If you don’t love [name]Christopher[/name], don’t go for it. I share your love for [name]Kit[/name], and ditto not for [name]Christopher[/name]. Are there alternative routes to [name]Kit[/name]?
[name]Otto[/name]- I love [name]Otto[/name], and think he goes handsomely with [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Felix[/name]. My favourite choice for you- unusual, striking, but wearable with the same savvy shortness of [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Felix[/name].
[name]Otto[/name], [name]Kit[/name] and [name]Gus[/name] are my favourites- with [name]Augustin[/name] just bringing up a couple of quibbles for me.
[name]Reuben[/name] I like, but am slightly less struck by.
And, [name]Christopher[/name] I think is less inspiring!
Some great suggestions too- [name]Love[/name] [name]Quentin[/name] for you! Also love [name]Jago[/name], [name]Sullivan[/name] and [name]Barnaby[/name].
Thanks all for your lovely feedback - people are so nice on this forum!
I just wanted to reply to the above - the baby was lost at just 7 weeks so I don’t have any long-lasting associations with the name belonging to that child. Reuben was back on the table without question once I became pregnant again so I’m really comfortable with this.
Oh yes this Christopher/Kit dilemma is a real bind. I adore Kit but not Christopher… so hard.
I love the story about the blue recipe! Makes me smile. I have always thought there’s a power to lots of siblings of the same gender. They’re like a team who have each other always.
I’m an only child so a team of same-gender siblings has quite a lot of mystique for me. I’m sure that this is both real and imagined by me as certainly it’s not everybody’s experience, but I’ll never know what it’s like to have siblings so that’s just how it seems to me And now I get to raise a team of same-sex siblings! It will be an adventure
I love Augustin He’s my favourite August-name for boys. I’m not very into Gus at all, I prefer Augie. Augustin is sill my favourite though.
Kit is also lovely, but I too don’t care much for Christopher. I came across Kittophoros once, but I don’t think it’s the one for you Kermit could also be called Kit, but… Perhaps Corentin or Constantin/Constantine? Callisto? Caetano? Capability? Still very ‘out there’ though! Atticus and Patrick have the right sounds only in the wrong order. It’s a stretch, but Atticus nn Kit would be kind of cool.
Otto is fun, but I think he’s a little short for you. I like it when siblings have names of somewhat equal length. Ossian comes to mind, or maybe Octavian nn Otto.
Ari as well is short, but I like it as a nickname for Ariston. Again very unusual.
Quentin I also really like for you, even though I slightly prefer Quinlan. Quentin, Felix and Theodore would be fabulous!
What about [name]Orion[/name]? My friend has an adorable son named [name]Orion[/name] and it is such an awesome name… I think it fits well with your other names and I just had to throw it out there. It’s one of the brightest constellations in the night sky and there are three stars in [name]Orion[/name]'s belt (just like your three boys…). [name]Orion[/name] is a total guilty pleasure of mine & it feels like [name]Otto[/name] or [name]Ari[/name] from your list. Let me know what you think.
Can you use just [name]August[/name] instead of [name]Augustin[/name]? It sounds less pretentious to me and I think it’s perfect with [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name], which has to be one of the greatest sibsets ever.
[name]Callisto[/name] is on my list but DH laughed me out of town on that one. I think it’s gorgeous! [name]Both[/name] [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Patrick[/name] have the ‘ck’ sound in the wrong spot for the last name - both just sound clacky unfortunately, with the surname, which is why [name]Frederick[/name] isn’t on my list. Good suggestions though!
I will try my hardest!
[name]Orion[/name] is quite lovely - I will pop it on the list and see if it feels right down the track. Before we knew it was a boy I tried [name]Andromeda[/name] for a girl on DH - not sure he likes constellation names… grrrr.
I do like [name]August[/name], but DH says it’s absurd to have an [name]August[/name] born in [name]March[/name]. He has really funny ideas about names. He is my main inhibitor to naming this poor child.
[name]Felix[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] are in my top five! I love them
From your list I prefer [name]Otto[/name] (I love this), but if you don’t like to [name]Theo[/name]/[name]Otto[/name] thing, [name]August[/name] (I’m not really a fan of [name]Augustin[/name]) would fit perfectly. I don’t really see the problem with an [name]August[/name] born in [name]March[/name], haha. Most Aprils and Junes weren’t born in [name]April[/name] or [name]June[/name] and they were fairly popular in their times. [name]Felix[/name], [name]Theo[/name], and [name]Gus[/name] (if you like) sound like a perfect set of brothers in my opinion.
