What do you think of [name]Ondine[/name]? I love the meaning (I tend to love most any name with a sea and/or nature related meaning hehe) and I think it’s charming, but do you think it’s usable?
The meaning is nice, and the history isn’t horrible on its own. The mythological story would scare me if I were a little girl and decided to research my name… the whole story of the adulterous husband might be a little too interesting to share with your daughter when she asks about her name. But still, I’m with you until I think about “[name]Ondine[/name]'s Curse”. Have you heard of it? It’s what doctors call primary alveolar hypoventilation (also called congenital central hypoventilation syndrome or CCHS)… it’s a little weird as a name, if you ask me.
Water related names I do love:
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Meredith[/name]
[name]Winnifred[/name]
I can see why you like [name]Ondine[/name]. It has a beautiful meaning and sounds beautiful.
Unfortunately I keep seeing the word iodine instead of [name]Ondine[/name] and have to correct myself when reading it. I wish I didn’t because it’s an absolutely beautiful name.
If you worry about things like the [name]Ondine[/name] curse you also would have to strike [name]Amelia[/name], ect.
In reference to the myth, I always figure that if the character is a great role model it doesn’t matter much if the story is problematic.
@dovah I always think about [name]Ondine[/name]'s Curse when I see the name-- but do you think a layperson ever would?
I love that name, and I would love to see a little girl with it. But, to be honest, I really don’t think I could use it myself…
