So, the boy-name people have helped us decide that our son will be named either [name]Jason[/name] or [name]John[/name]. The girl name we have “waiting in the wings” is [name]Mary[/name], nn [name]May[/name]. My name is [name]Erin[/name]. So, I have really two questions:
[name]Do[/name] you think that we’re beginning to sound too “Waltons-ish” (the children in that program were [name]John[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Ellen[/name], [name]Jason[/name], [name]Ben[/name], [name]Jim[/name] [name]Bob[/name], [name]Erin[/name], and [name]Elizabeth[/name]), or do DH [name]Christian[/name] and DD [name]Sara[/name] even us out? Or did my growing up watching the Waltons all the time just predispose me to make this association?
Assuming we were able to have a second daughter after this, would using [name]John[/name] make it difficult to then use [name]Mary[/name]? Put another way, is [name]John[/name] + [name]Mary[/name] TOO plain?
My brother and sister are named [name]John[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] and I really think they are too plain… they are twins… Maybe you could do double names like:
I think [name]Christian[/name] and [name]Erin[/name], kids [name]Sara[/name] and [name]John[/name], sound nice, and not [name]Walton[/name]-ish. [name]IMO[/name] [name]Sara[/name] with [name]Jason[/name] is too 70s.
My name’s [name]Erin[/name] too! But onto your question: I think that [name]Sara[/name], [name]John[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] are very plain. To be honest, it seems a little bare of personality. Maybe instead of [name]Mary[/name] you can go with [name]May[/name], your chosen nn, or even spice it up a little with [name]Mae[/name] or [name]Maye[/name]. I think that the added e can totally change the personality of [name]May[/name]. And for [name]John[/name], maybe you could substitute in [name]James[/name] or [name]Jackson[/name].
[name]Sara[/name], [name]John[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] do sound a little bit plain together - not necessarily a bad thing, but if it were me I might go with [name]May[/name] as a given name, or perhaps [name]Maria[/name], [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Miriam[/name] - you could still use [name]May[/name] (or [name]Miri[/name], from the latter).
Okay, junk [name]Mary[/name] until we can figure out how to get the nickname [name]May[/name]/[name]Maisie[/name], which is what we want. Our backup girls’ name (I insisted with [name]Sara[/name] on an extra of each gender going into the hospital, since in my family’s experience, the sonogram often lies, and sometimes the name you’ve decided on doesn’t fit) is [name]Edith[/name] [name]Sidney[/name]. We love [name]Edie[/name], and although we’re usually against boys’ names for girls, [name]Sidney[/name] was the name of my husband’s great-grandmother, and his grandmother told us when we were running names by her previously that she always regretted naming her daughter [name]Sally[/name] instead of [name]Sidney[/name]. Is this a good idea, since it departs from our general stylistic preferences? Thanks!
O, and by the way, evansma, we love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name]! If (long string of ifs) our child is a girl and we named her [name]Mary[/name], we were going to go for [name]Mary[/name] [name]Claire[/name] with another middle name. I just put up [name]Mary[/name] alone because I was trying out first names
I think [name]John[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] sound perfect together. I really love [name]Mary[/name] and it’s one of the very few girl names that sound great with the new trendy boys names as well as the timeless classic boy names.
Also, I have seen that show and I never made the connection.
Plain isn’t bad so long as you have a spicier nn. Is [name]John[/name] going to be called [name]Jack[/name]? [name]John[/name] & [name]Mary[/name] nn [name]Jack[/name] & [name]May[/name]/[name]Maisie[/name] isn’t plain. [name]John[/name] & [name]Edith[/name] nn [name]Jack[/name] & [name]Edie[/name] are nice too.
