We’re not finding out the gender of this baby (#2) & I hate the idea of calling him or her “it” throughout the entire pregnancy. We didn’t find out with our first, everyone would say, “Is it kicking?” “What are you going to name it?” It. It. It.
I’d love to find out, just because I’m horrible with surprises, but my husband does NOT want to know. He loves the idea of finding out in the delivery room. (He said I can find out-- but he doesn’t want to know. Pssh. I totally don’t see that happening. As if I could keep a secret like THAT for months!)
So, we came to a compromise. We’re thinking of naming the baby a unisex name (one that we both like) and then choosing a gender-specific middle name once the baby arrives. We both really like [name]Reese[/name]. I think it works for a boy or a girl. I’d really like to use that spelling too, since it has significance in my family.
Are there any other names that work well for either? We like names that aren’t in the top 100 & seem to gravitate towards surnames. Our first little guy is named [name]Hudson[/name]. (We chose it a few years ago–before it started climbing the charts.)
That’s a great ideas. I have a suggestion that you can throw out if you don’t like:
using the same initials like:
TJ - [name]Tucker[/name] [name]James[/name] or [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and then during pregnancy you can use TJ instead of it (and it gives you the option of keeping the names secret from others if you want)
JJ - [name]Jayden[/name] [name]Jeffrey[/name] or Jaedyn [name]Jasmine[/name]
LT - [name]Logan[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] or [name]Lindon[/name] [name]Tessa[/name]
KC - [name]Kennedy[/name] [name]Cooper[/name] or [name]Kennedy[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
You could also call the baby a nickname like [name]Charlie[/name] and name it [name]Charles[/name] if it’s a boy and [name]Charlotte[/name] if it’s a girl.
I like [name]Elsie[/name] K’s idea of using a nickname and changing the full name when the baby arrives. I like that you’re considering using a unisex name on either gender- generally, people stick to one, but your openness is nice to see. Some names that I think work on a girl or boy:
[name]Quinn[/name] (my favorite of the bunch)
[name]Ari[/name]
[name]Jordan[/name]
[name]Mackenzie[/name] (okay, maybe this one wouldn’t work so well on a boy, but [name]Mack[/name] would)
[name]Kendall[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Sidney[/name]
[name]Noah[/name]
I had a friend in a situation similar to yours- they decided not to find out the gender, but she couldn’t bear calling her baby “it.” She ended up alternating between “he” and “she” every day until the baby was born, just talking about the baby as if she knew it was a girl/boy (depending on which day it was).
I think sili annie’s idea of initials is a great one.
But I also [name]LOVE[/name] the idea of giving the child a name before you know their gender. I don’t know – it’s just great.
SO some of my favorite unisex names:
[name]Dylan[/name]
[name]Blair[/name] / [name]Blaire[/name]
[name]Kai[/name]
[name]Sky[/name] / [name]Skye[/name]
[name]Chance[/name] (I’ve actually only known boys but don’t see why it wouldn’t be great for a girl too)
[name]Drew[/name]
[name]Aaron[/name] / [name]Erin[/name]
[name]Cassidy[/name]
[name]Deven[/name] / [name]Devin[/name] / [name]Devon[/name]
[name]Lark[/name] (I don’t know why this name appears almost exclusively as a girls name here)
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Sage[/name], [name]Kai[/name] & [name]Dylan[/name] are my favorites, probably b/c I have known equal numbers of boys & girls with these names and I just think they are great names.
we did the same thing. i’m taylor, bf is francis, and dd is cassidy so unisex seemed like the only way to go. we decided on quinn, pretty much, regardless of gender. we ended up finding out becaus my then three year old was just too confused by the whole thing. he’s a boy and while i am throwing names around a bit i have thought of his as quinn almost every day.
other unisex names i like are…
emerson
elliot
dakota
cameron
dylan
logan
evan
casey
spencer
jensen
avery
grey
kendal
payton
leighton
riley
wesley
sawyer
just go on line and look up unisex names i’m sure you’ll find a ton. there’s always frankie, charlie, bobby etc… maybe you could come up with a unisex nickname that have a different full name???
