One overplanner

Hi, welcome back to Nameberry!

I’m going to move this into the #baby-names category as even though it is largely about the parent-to-parent compromise, it is still fundamentally a question about names and would do well there to get a larger pool of responses.

I think I can comment on this because I am definitely an over planner too and I like all my children’s names to be well matched in the sense that they feel like a sibset/collective.
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner and I have verrrrry different tastes when it comes to names. He likes what I call slightly dull/play it safe, conservative taste in names and I like names which have more depth, not as common and which just really do something for me.

I think my best advice would be to not get too caught up in the whole thought process of naming future siblings because I actually think that can confuse matters and over complicate your ideas/tastes. I always think the first child is the stepping stone really. In as much as whatever their name is, kinda paves the way forward in future siblings names regardless. So for now, it’s not a bridge you have to cross right now.
What may be useful is for your partner to write down all the names he likes and you write all the names you like, and narrow it down from there by trying to come up with an option that appeals to you both. It might be that you stumble upon a name based of your choices that works for both of you.
It may take some digging and name browsing but I actually feel like that’s the fun part!

For instance, we are TTC our third in a few months. I love names like [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u], [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] and these are names my partner really just couldn’t get on board with. When I explained to him that I really just would love a soft sounding boys name which still retains that air of strength and classic feel about it he went away with that in mind and came up with [name_u]Elias[/name_u]. It was literally like a lightbulb moment because it was exactly the name vibe I was going for. And even better its a name that stylistically matches my two older boys names. All their names are a mix of Hebrew/Greek. So it was perfect.
So in conclusion I would say enjoy the name journey together! Get some lists written up without putting too many naming obstacles in front initially and see where you go from there.
