We are having a second girl and I want her name to have a relationship with her big sister’s name. Big sister’s middle name is [name]Pearl[/name]. I am looking for another single syllable name that has the same feel as [name]Pearl[/name]. It doesn’t need to rhyme or repeat the first letter. I just want it to share that same feeling. A strong tradition, a bit old fashioned, a dash of whimsy, definitely feminine. More character than space fillers like [name]Lynn[/name] or [name]Lee[/name], but not a word name like [name]Wren[/name] or [name]Lake[/name].
Am I asking too much?
Names we are considering: [name]Jane[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Belle[/name]
None of these really satisfy me. These are more my husband’s favorites.
Aside from the obvious, here are a list of names one of us has already axed:
[name]Lane[/name] [name]June[/name] [name]Grey[/name] [name]Zoe[/name] [name]Rain[/name] [name]May[/name] [name]Sage[/name] [name]Bliss[/name] [name]Cate[/name] (nn for First Name) [name]Beth[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Bea[/name]
[name]Faye[/name]
[name]Jean[/name]
[name]Joan[/name]
[name]Kay[/name] (though you can see in my sig that I like [name]Kay[/name] as a boy’s middle name, most people will think of it as feminine)
[name]Min[/name]
[name]Wynn[/name]
[name]Blythe[/name] hasn’t got a mention yet. I love it. I really love [name]Blythe[/name] and don’t think it gets enough love. The sound is also soft enough it doesn’t fight most first names as long as they don’t end in -th and not that many do. [name]Blithe[/name] is a word name but [name]Blythe[/name] isn’t.
I do like [name]Belle[/name], but not as much. I do like [name]Jane[/name], but prefer it as a first name.
[name]Mae[/name] is a bit trendy but I really like it, haven’t seen it mentioned yet. I’m not sure if [name]Jewel[/name] should be one syllable but I say it that way.
Already mentioned but I like them: [name]Fern[/name], [name]Faith[/name], [name]Claire[/name] (I also like [name]Clare[/name], the simpler British spelling), [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Gwen[/name].
Thank you for your replies! I didn’t expect to get such a warm reception for [name]Rose[/name]. [name]Reading[/name] Nameberry is what led me to tally up [name]Rose[/name]'s usage as a middle name among people I know. I would be using it for the same reasons as many others in order to make a surname first name identifiable as feminine. I can’t let it go because it captures a lot of what I am looking for.
More interesting discoveries:
[name]Claire[/name]-[name]Love[/name]! I love [name]Clare[/name], too.
[name]Eve[/name]-Really close to my daughter’s name. Naturally, I love it.
[name]Grace[/name]-This is going on my contender’s list. I can’t believe I didn’t have it on there already!
[name]Tess[/name]-My sister’s name is [name]Tessa[/name]. Somehow my entire immediate family is represented in the replies. Too funny.
[name]Kay[/name]-[name]Both[/name] my Mom and [name]MIL[/name]'s middle name. It would work, but I’d rather not. Harsh, right?
[name]Min[/name]-[name]One[/name] of my nicknames!
[name]Wynn[/name]-Interesting twist on my middle name, [name]Lynn[/name]. I’ve never seen that before.
[name]Maeve[/name]-I have read several books that have character’s with this name. I still have never heard it out loud. [name]How[/name] is it pronounced?
[name]Opal[/name]-I like the fact that this is another jewel name so it is in the [name]Pearl[/name] name family.
[name]Plum[/name]-I [name]LOVE[/name] this. My husband hates it. It doesn’t flow particularly well with our names, so it was easier to part with it. I just love it, though.
[name]IMO[/name], the best match for [name]Pearl[/name] is [name]June[/name], (and I realize it’s been axed.) I just love, love, [name]LOVE[/name] [name]June[/name]! I also love your choice of [name]Belle[/name].
BTW, the [name]Maeve[/name] I knew pronounced it like rhyming with ‘cave.’
