So we have one more week until baby is here and my husband has just agreed to another name. Up until today he has vetoed this name every time I’ve suggested it but now it is on our list of just 3 choices. The name is [name]Hudson[/name].
So questions for you berries about this name-
[name]Do[/name] you like it?
Is it a classic name? Or more modern? I saw that it’s been ranked in the US since 1880 so I am thinking it is a classic name with some history but I don’t know much about the name. I think it’s considered a surname name?
What vibe do you get from it? To me it has a sort of nature vibe to it, I guess because of the river. Does anyone else get that?
And does it go with our daughters’ names ([name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]) or does it sound mismatched or odd to you with the sibset?
We only have a week left and I wasn’t expecting a new name possibility to present itself so close to the baby’s birth. I am trying to sit with this name and figure out if it feels like “the name” so I thought posting might help me figure it out.
Before today, we were down to 2 names- either [name]Jack[/name] or [name]August[/name]. Those are still both strong contenders. The full name combinations for the three on our list would be either-
[name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] or [name]Jack[/name] [name]August[/name] or [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hudson[/name]
[name]August[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] or [name]August[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Hudson[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] or [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name]
([name]Hawthorne[/name] and [name]James[/name] are family names and [name]Hawthorne[/name] is especially meaningful to us so it’s our top choice for a middle.)
Which one(s) do you like best for our family? I would like to figure out this little guy’s name before he arrives if possible! Thanks as always for your help!!
I think of it as a surname-name…I don’t know the history of how those names were used, but they seem very 1800’s to me. I think of names like [name]Hudson[/name] and [name]Cooper[/name] as being used as given names when there was a family connection…mom’s maiden name, or somesuch…or as an aspirational name. Until, when?, the late 1990’s? It seems like there was some trigger that pushed surname into greater popularity.
The vibe I get is upper [name]East[/name] Coast, gentleman, and a bit of hero/aspirational. [name]Henry[/name] [name]Hudson[/name], I suppose. The nickname Hud gets me to [name]Paul[/name] [name]Newman[/name]'s blue eyes.
[name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] are romantic, sachet-like names to me. [name]Jack[/name] seems a little workaday next to them. I’ve never really been a fan of [name]August[/name]…pronouncing it like the month seems too little, pronouncing it with the stress on the last syllable seems too much.
So [name]Hudson[/name] seems like a great choice to me. [name]Hudson[/name]'s got enough adventure and glamour to stand next to his sisters, but isn’t pretentious.
[name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name] seems to have a better rhythm, than [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name], but I love [name]Hawthorne[/name] for a middle so much I don’t want to let it go. Without knowing your last name, it’s a tough call.
Out of your names I like [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] the best. I think it sounds strong and romantic next to your girls names. [name]Hudson[/name] isn’t really my style and I think [name]Jack[/name] sounds better with your sibset. But that’s my opinion, yours is the one that matters. Go with your gut. Congrats and good luck!
I quite like [name]Hudson[/name] and think of it as a surname name with some history and I think it works smashingly with your daughters’ names. Part of what I like about it is that, like [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name], I feel like it could work on a variety of personalities (unlike [name]August[/name]).
I too think [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name] sounds better than [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name], but with the right surname [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] could sound awesome.
My favorites are [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name] and [name]August[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name]. Though [name]Hudson[/name] goes better with [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name] than [name]August[/name] does, in my opinion.
Of those choices my favorites are [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorn[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name].
I think [name]Hudson[/name] straddles the line between modern (surname trend) and vintage (since it has been used for so long). It’s a little more uncommon than your girls names, but I think it could work.
I think it’s really funny that nameberry mentions a band called [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] but not the man [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] who was a famous missionary and probably led to it’s jump in popularity in the 1800’s. Anyway, great name!
[name]Jack[/name] is more similar to [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] is closer to [name]Violet[/name] in terms of popularity and modernity, so I think either could work well.
Super helpful responses, thank you! I am liking [name]Hudson[/name] a lot right now and have gotten really positive responses from a few people in my family that I brought it up to today also. But I’m a little worried after doing some reading that it is perceived as a trendy name. Not what I want… But I guess [name]Jack[/name] might also be perceived as a trendy name just because there are so many of them right now (??) I like that [name]Hudson[/name] is less common than [name]Jack[/name]. But I am really liking the combination of [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] which my husband and I just agreed on and I feel like [name]Hawthorne[/name] gives [name]Jack[/name] a little something special. But middle names are rarely used in our family so I don’t know how much weight I should give to the middle name. Naming a person is so difficult (especially boys names)!
Thanks again and would love to hear more opinions!
I don’t know how you feel about having 2 middle names, but depending on your surname I think [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] could be fabulous! Of your list, I like [name]Hudson[/name] [name]James[/name] and [name]August[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] best. Good luck and congrats on your soon-to-be sweetie!
I prefer [name]Jack[/name] or [name]August[/name] but [name]Hudson[/name] fits nicely as well. [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] would be nice. [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] flows the best with [name]Hawthorne[/name] as the middle name.
Out of those three choices, I think [name]Jack[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] sounds best with your girls. [name]Hudson[/name] is a good name, I just feel like it doesn’t quite make sense with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]. [name]August[/name] would work, too, with your girls, but I happen to prefer [name]Jack[/name]
