One week left, trying to decide!

I’m due in about a week, [name_u]August[/name_u] couldn’t come soon enough!

As I explained in a previous post we had decided on a name for our son, but I got cold feet and that name is now off the list. We would love some opinions and feedback on the names we still have on our list. If it matters I’m half American/half Swedish, while my husband is American. Our surname is Johnstone so we are a bit unsure about the names starting with J, but we think they sound good enough. Any and all feedback is welcome though.

The list:

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryland[/name_m] / [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] / Sorin

[name_m]Levi[/name_m] - I love this name! I’m a little sad it’s grown so much in popularity though. It’s short, it’s strong, (for me) I like the biblical reference.

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] - again I like the biblical reference (might not be for everyone), I think it’s recent popularity is tied to Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars character. At first I was just so so on the name, but has definitely grown on me.

[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] - I can’t get out of my mind this is the name of the computer in Iron [name_m]Man[/name_m] (I’m pretty sure or a computer in a different movie). For me, that hang up would be too much, too mechanical reference.

[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] - classic name that will never go out of style. Has built in nn if you want to use one, [name_m]Dan[/name_m]/[name_u]Danny[/name_u].

[name_u]August[/name_u] - I know a lot of berries here like this name, for me it’s almost too literal to be born in [name_u]August[/name_u] and that’s your name as well. [name_m]Just[/name_m] iffy on this one.

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - same comment as for [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]; nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]/[name_u]Sammy[/name_u]

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - I love this name, this name will wear well as he gets older

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - same comments as [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]; [name_m]Tom[/name_m]/[name_m]Tommy[/name_m]

[name_m]William[/name_m] - great name, again classic and won’t go out of style. i think it fits at any stage of life too.

[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] - I feel that it is over used, I can probably quickly name off 12 I know and another 6 with some thinking. It has a great meaning and sound, which is why it is so popular.

[name_m]Casper[/name_m] - I still think of [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the friendly ghost at first thought, but I don’t think that connection will be made for his generation. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t hate it, but not my favorite.

[name_m]Ryland[/name_m] - I’d go with the “d” ending, fees more complete and mature. I like this, it feels fresh and new.

[name_u]Hayden[/name_u] - all the “aiden” sounding names I feel are recently overused. Personally I’d steer clear, but if it’s one you love it’s a good name.

[name_u]Drew[/name_u] - I like this one more for a girl now… Or more for a boy mn. [name_m]Just[/name_m] probably due to why I’ve looked at lately.

[name_m]Joel[/name_m] - short and strong too. I feel this one as a mn as well.

[name_u]Reid[/name_u] - I like it, it’s simple and can grow with him.

[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] - I’m not sure why, maybe a movie at some point, but I associate this name with an antagonist character name. Prob just me. It’s interesting to see a soft “c” boy name. Definitely growing in popularity so it’s not obscure, but not overly popular.

[name_m]Holden[/name_m] - I like this one, I don’t see an obvious nn, so if that’s something you’d want maybe a different name. This one is wearable and fits at any age.

[name_m]Liam[/name_m] - same comments as for [name_m]Levi[/name_m]

[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - he will definitely be called [name_u]Max[/name_u] by friends, if you like that then yay, it’s a great name.

[name_m]Soren[/name_m] - I’ve only heard of this name since looking up names here on Nameberry. It’s still a little odd to my ear, hearing “sore” in a name. But not hating it.

[name_m]Bjorn[/name_m] - from an American perspective, I don’t think it would work. If you live somewhere else maybe. I’m not a fan. Other kids will have a harder time reading/saying it, and will prob be misspelled, imo.

My favorite is [name_m]William[/name_m], and can use the nick name [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

[name_m]Levi[/name_m] - I used to love [name_m]Levi[/name_m]–it’s quirky and Biblical and quite timeless. I’ve been out-of-love with it for a while now, but family friends just used it for their son ([name_m]Levi[/name_m] J0hn), and I may be appreciating it more. I am happy that someone used it–it’s a nice name–but I don’t think I’d use it for myself. Although [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] [name_u]Palin[/name_u]‘s ex/first son’s dad’s name is [name_m]Levi[/name_m] [name_m]Johnston[/name_m], so I think I’d ax this one from my list, personally, if I was a Mrs. Johnstone.
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] - I like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] a lot! I personally lean toward it as a MN, but it’s seriously SO cool and I’d love to meet an [name_m]Ezra[/name_m].
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] - I’m massively in love with the [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] movies/MCU (though I’ve not set my eyes on one comic book, ironically!), so I can’t think of [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] as more than [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]. It’s a very old-time-feeling British name, though–it’s quite quirky. I think it’d make a nice middle, but I wouldn’t use it up front, personally.
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] - Despite the popularity, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. I think [name_u]Danny[/name_u] is so cute, and [name_m]Dan[/name_m] or [name_u]Neil[/name_u]/[name_u]Niall[/name_u] could be more spunky, unexpected nns. It’s so easy to pair with a more unexpected MN ([name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] is my favorite. I also like [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_u]Florian[/name_u].), and so versatile. I am not a [name_m]Dan[/name_m] fan, but I’m so immensely in love with [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. I love it.
[name_u]August[/name_u] - I’m trying to decide how I feel about [name_u]August[/name_u], honestly. I love Auggie and like [name_u]Gus[/name_u], and even [name_m]Gust[/name_m], but something put me off about [name_u]August[/name_u] as a FN. I kind of can’t envision a little boy with the name, or even an adult, although I’m sure as soon as I met one I would probably be in love. I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_u]Auguste[/name_u], though, and am minorly obsessed with the Portuguese Agostinho (which, sadly, I think is a bit too unrealistic. I’m trying to re-evaluate and decide if I should use [name_u]Auguste[/name_u] or [name_u]August[/name_u] instead. It’s a lovely name and very handsome, though, and if you love it, I think [name_u]August[/name_u] Johnstone is a great name.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - le swoon. love. I adore the nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u], and [name_u]Sammy[/name_u] is adorable for a little boy! It’s on my top 5, and I probably STAY in love with [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] because I love my combo so very much. haha. Some of my combos I love more than others, but [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Gaspard[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] makes me swoon every time I look at it–and it’s been on my list for probably years now.
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - I wish I could like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], because it was my great-grandpa’s middle name. I love [name_f]Liv[/name_f] names for girls–[name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Livia[/name_f], just [name_f]Liv[/name_f]–but I haven’t really seen the appeal of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. It’s objectively a nice name, but I don’t think I’d ever love it enough to use it. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] Johnstone sounds good.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] makes me smile. He just feels so gentle and peaceful; I love it! I can never seem to find a combo I like as much as I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], but I wish I could. I love [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
[name_m]William[/name_m] - I like [name_m]William[/name_m] as a mn, but I don’t love it up front. I’m not a huge [name_m]Will[/name_m] or [name_m]Liam[/name_m] fan, and all the other options seem too dated ([name_m]Bill/name_m) or just seem odd to me ([name_m]Wim[/name_m]).
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] - once upon a time, [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] was my favorite boys’ name, but I prefer [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] these days.
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] - le swoon! [name_m]Casper[/name_m]! I love that it sort of subtly honors your Swedish ancestry (I haven’t looked at Swedish rankings, but I’m part Norwegian and [name_m]German[/name_m], and I’ve seen them on Danish, Norwegian, [name_m]German[/name_m], etc. stats, and have met at least one [name_u]Dane[/name_u] named [name_m]Casper[/name_m]–and it just feels northern European), but not outright, since it’s not [name_m]JUST[/name_m] Scandinavian. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] Johnstone sounds great, and I’m probably biased, since [name_m]Casper[/name_m]'s probably in my top three or four names, but I think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] stands out in a perfect way and is just gorgeous! [name_m]Casper[/name_m] makes me smile, haha. I love the nns [name_m]Cas[/name_m] and [name_m]Cap/name_m, too.
[name_m]Ryland[/name_m] / [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] - I used to think these were uber trendy (although I’m not sure why?), but recently I’ve really come to like them. They’re handsome.
[name_u]Hayden[/name_u] - I like it quite a lot. The baddie in the last suspense novel I read was named [name_m]Haden[/name_m] (well, he was one of them, anyway), so I’m not sure how I feel about him right now, but I’ve really liked him in the past. Of all the [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] names out there, he’s probably my second favorite ([name_u]Aidan[/name_u] being my favorite).
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] - not a huge fan. I like just [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] best of the [name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_u]Drew[/name_u]/[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] camp, and I like the European [name_m]Andreas[/name_m] even more. [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Johnstone is nice, but I like [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] or [name_m]Andreas[/name_m] Johnstone even more.
[name_m]Joel[/name_m] - I never really noticed him for years, but I’ve really been noticing [name_m]Joel[/name_m] lately! I came across two really great guys named [name_m]Joel[/name_m] last month, and he sounds so nice when said. My mom’s cousin’s name is [name_m]Joel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Joe[/name_m]. I would have probably disliked him a couple of months ago, but [name_m]Joel[/name_m] has my interest piqued. I’m not sure how I feel about [name_m]Joel[/name_m] Johnstone, though. The [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-s seem pretty repetitive.
[name_u]Reid[/name_u] - I vascillate between liking [name_u]Reid[/name_u] and being bored of him, but I think [name_u]Reid[/name_u] Johstone sounds amazing.
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] - [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is great! I dislike it more than I used to because of the character from Scandal, but I still like [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] a lot.
[name_m]Holden[/name_m] - I used to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Holden[/name_m], but I’ve sort of cooled off on him for the past few years. I’m starting to notice him more, though. I guess it depends on how your last name is said ([name_m]STONE[/name_m] or stuhn at the end?), but if it’s the latter, I don’t think [name_m]Holden[/name_m] sounds the best.
[name_m]Liam[/name_m] - a bit too popular for me, but it is a handsome name.
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - I am massively fond of [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] nn [name_u]Max[/name_u], but I’m not nearly so fond of [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], unfortunately! It does sound good with your surname, though.
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] / Sorin - I like [name_m]Soren[/name_m] a lot.
[name_m]Bjorn[/name_m] - same as [name_m]Soren[/name_m].

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Holden[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m], [name_u]Reid[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] are my favorites (which I don’t suppose narrows it down much, but I hope it’s somewhat helpful lol).

Good luck!

With Johnstone I really like [name_u]Drew[/name_u], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], [name_u]Reid[/name_u], and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I also like [name_m]Holden[/name_m] but the other names sound better with Johnstone because of the “N” ending in both. [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Johnstone or [name_u]Reid[/name_u] Johnstone are very nice as I like the shorter fn with Johnstone. You have a nice list though and any of them would be fine.

Thank you all! We have decided to rule out [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u], [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m]. We would love some more feedback/opinions though, it’s really helpful!

But now I’m going to get some well deserved sleep.

My favs:

least favorites:
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryland[/name_m] / [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]

Thanks again, keep the opinions coming! We have narrowed it down further and these are the ones we’re still discussing:

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] (a bit unsure though)
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryland[/name_m] / [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]
Sorin / Sorin

My top 4 so far is [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m]. We’re thinking about removing [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m], [name_m]Holden[/name_m] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] from the list. We’ll give it another day or so to “feel them”

My favorites:
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]: I love this name. It’s strong but very gentle at the same time. It was on our shortlist for our son. We decided against it because it sounds so Scandinavian to me and we have no Scandinavian origins on either side of our family. That is not a problem for you!
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - Is in my current top names for boys. I love the nn wells but knowing he could be called [name_u]Max[/name_u] as well is not a deal breaker for me. [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] is becoming more popular so that’s my only concern. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s becoming more popular it is also a classic, solid name that has a long history and consistent use of time & not in the trendy category of names that I try to stay away from.
[name_m]William[/name_m] - [name_m]William[/name_m] is one of my favorite classic names. I like the nn [name_m]Liam[/name_m]. I love it as a middle name too.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - Another wonderful classic choice. It’s not on my list because it doesn’t work well with our last name:-(

Names I like but don’t love: [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Holden[/name_m], [name_m]Samual[/name_m].

My least favorites: [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m], [name_m]Ryland[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] (I like it but it’s so popular/trendy! I much prefer it as a short name for [name_m]William[/name_m])

Of your list, I like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Ryland[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] and Sorin the best. [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] are all safe and classic names you can’t go wrong with. [name_m]William[/name_m]/[name_m]Liam[/name_m] also falls into that category, but it’s so popular recently where I live that it feels a bit dull. I am not a fan of [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]; it just sounds vaguely icky to me.
