So the first two kids were named shortly after determining sex…this time seems much harder. We have already went through one long and short list and have started over since nothing seemed to stick. I am so ready to stop obsessing and just get ready for the baby to arrive. Please help.
Last name one syllable starts with D ends with hard consonant. Sibs names [name]Uli[/name] (pronounced like [name]Julie[/name] without J) [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] [name]Lyra[/name].
To keep some consistency, prerequisites are that it is not common (like not in top 1000), how it sounds, and what it means. I won’t go on and on with the long lists, but here are some of the final contenders from both lists…even though the finalists seem to change daily, ugh.
List 1:
[name]Laszlo[/name]
[name]Cosmo[/name], [name]Cosimo[/name], Cosmos
Iden (this is out of contention I think–everyone likes it but too sim to over-popular Aidens)
[name]Argus[/name]
[name]Otto[/name] (this is our fave, but fear it is headed towards a rise in popularity–just look at all the places it is mentioned on nb --wanted to name first [name]Jasper[/name] in 2010 when in 900’s but did not for same reason, now it’s in the 200’s I think)
List 2:
[name]Isadore[/name] (too fem? can’t help but think [name]Isadore[/name] [name]Spartacus[/name] from The Birdcage)
[name]Hawthorne[/name] (neither of our kids have nn but this might need one, but what? also is it too long compared to sibs?)
[name]Yarrow[/name]
[name]Atlas[/name]
[name]Echo[/name]
Zeph
As an aside, middle name of other kids have a coincidentally musical connotation…not at all necessary but wanted to put it out there.
Any suggestions or input happily accepted. This little boy needs a name so I can get some sleep!
I love [name]Otto[/name]! It might be gaining popularity, but he probably will still be the only one in his classes (although I can relate: I don’t think I can use my beloved [name]Charlotte[/name] for the same reason). [name]Argus[/name] and [name]Atlas[/name] are both great too.
I don’t think [name]Isidore[/name] is too feminine, but I prefer it in the middle spot, for some reason.
Zeph is my pick, but it should be short for [name]Zephyr[/name]. Or if you prefer something short and strong: [name]Zev[/name].
[name]Yarrow[/name] and [name]Echo[/name] are too feminine. [name]Isadore[/name] isn’t feminine, but it is exactly masculine either.
Niteowl13, I prefer Zephyr to Zeph too but dh liked Zeph. I didn’t like what I found for Zeph in the urban dictionary, not sure how credible but this one may be off the list just in case. Thanks for the input on Yarrow and Echo…I kind of wondered myself. Probably will keep Echo in the running for middle since it does have the vaguely musical connotation that sibs middles do.
Katiedawn121, hmm, Bo you say? Gonzo is my wish I could but no one will let me name;)
Rollo, Argus was actually our #1 from list one. My only problem with it is the Harry Potter link. That and Gus is becoming more popular.
Allisonleigh, yeah I really like Otto too. I keep wondering if I haven’t firmly settled on anything hoping that we’ll end up nameless at the hospital and be able to say, “Well we both like Otto and we’ve run out of time…” I like Atlas as well, particularly the image of holding the weight of the world.
Please keep the input and suggestions coming…I can’t stop searching. Don’t tell dh but I have a new one.
country mouse I know nothing about [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] except to say that I love the name [name]Harry[/name] and I think that and correct me if I am wrong that [name]Argus[/name] was a minor character and therefore won’t be inevitably noteable to others as a [name]Potter[/name] name.
And no I think Xylo Cline sounds like a part for an engine.
[name]Do[/name] you like [name]Zebulon[/name] or [name]Eben[/name]? Or Xenon or [name]Xander[/name]?
rollo, you are correct [name]Argus[/name] Filch was a minor character (although in all stories). He was the night-watchman character. I like [name]Argus[/name] for its meaning of guardian OR bright. I also love that here on nb they say it would be better suited as a name for a camera (it is the name of a camera company) deterring many from keeping it on the list. Also I am open to alternate spelling of Argos.
Thoughts on [name]Argus[/name] vs Argos anyone?
New idea: Otso (as an alt to [name]Otto[/name] which I really think is going up in the lists too fast for my taste)
So seriously, I am very close to putting pen to paper and giving DH my short short list. [name]Just[/name] need to wrap up a few loose ends and put together a group of first and middles. I say that like it will be final but we’ll see;)
Can I even consider [name]Busby[/name]? First or middle. [name]Love[/name] [name]Buzz[/name] actually but don’t know if I can convince the rest of the family (well my 4yo would probably be easy to convince:)
Once I get some combos nailed down I will put up a poll I think. Sorry I’m all over the place. Need to get this over with so I can plan one son’s “birthday” and the others “birth day”.
[name]Hawk[/name] is a great nn for [name]Hawthorne[/name] but already have a [name]Wren[/name]. Might be too birdy?
Place names are tough, I feel like since I’ve never been there…
Otso, from what I can tell, refers to the bear spirit in the forest that is never named (ooooh) in Finnish mythology…although I can completely see where it seems made up.
I love [name]Otto[/name]- and just for some perspective- there were only 213 Ottos born in the US in 2011 and 173 in 2010- so it’s not climbing super fast.
I like Argos and pp’s suggestion of [name]Zev[/name] is great too. Have you considered [name]Avi[/name] or [name]Ogden[/name]?
[name]Argus[/name] -this spelling is better. [name]Don[/name]'t name your son Argos unless you are an Argonaut fan (football team) -although, it is a Canadian football team so I guess if you live far away it’d be safe. He wouldn’t be able to move to Montreal [name]EVER[/name] though -they are the big rivals.
[name]Otto[/name] -just because a name is frequently mentioned on NB, doesn’t necessarily mean it will be used frequently by everyone else. Berries are a special breed I think.
[name]Isadore[/name] -too fem? yes, I think so.
[name]Hawthorne[/name] -I really like this one esp with nn [name]Hawk[/name]. Yes, [name]Hawk[/name] & [name]Wren[/name] are both birds, but one is a bird of prey and one is a little song bird. In my mind, they’re completely different… although I studied ornithology a looonnnggg time ago.
[name]Yarrow[/name] -I agree with the pp that this is rather feminine
[name]Atlas[/name] -according to Wikipedia, [name]Atlas[/name] was punished for taking the wrong side in a war, and was forced to hold up the skies, not the earth. I wouldn’t use this name, just because an atlas is also a book of maps -I find it strange to share a name with an object.
[name]Echo[/name] -as a mn, it would be okay, but as a fn, it sounds like he is supposed to be a repeat of his brother or something like that.
Zeph -this seems like a nn to me but [name]Zephyr[/name] sounds very feminine. What about [name]Zephaniah[/name] or Zephan? I like pp suggestion of [name]Zev[/name].
Xylo -as in Xylophone? I can’t help but think he will get that reference ALL the time! It may very well become extremely annoying!
[name]Busby[/name] -it means “shrub farm”. nn [name]Buzz[/name] is very cute but there is probably a better way to get to it.
What about:
[name]Arden[/name] -“valley of the eagle”
[name]Ziven[/name] -“lively” (although some people might confuse it with “seven”)
[name]Boaz[/name] -“swiftness” similar to [name]Busby[/name], you could use nn [name]Buzz[/name].
Congratulations on baby #3 and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.
With your sibset, I like [name]Lazlo[/name], [name]Cosmo[/name]/[name]Cosimo[/name], [name]Argus[/name]/Argos, and [name]Otto[/name] the best. I think any of these work well and I wouldn’t worry about any of them getting too popular. Although I like it, [name]Isidore[/name] is a little fem sounding. I also wouldn’t use [name]Echo[/name] or [name]Yarrow[/name] with the fns ending in O.
