Oof family does not agree

I always thought Dickon was a handsome and easy name since my dad was [name_m]Richard[/name_m], and Dickon is a nickname of his name and I like the sound of the name/liked character of Dickon from secret garden and he was removed enough from the “dick” nickname but then I just heard my sister say she hated Dickon. Now I wonder if it sounds too odd for a young man.

I don’t think it’s too odd for a little boy, and it makes a sweet honor for your father. I do think of [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Dickens first though, not Dickon from “The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden”, if that makes a difference.

Quick question though: Would Dickon be a first or a middle?

I think Dickon would be a great honor for your Dad, although I think of both [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Dickens and Dickon from The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden. If you can’t make it work, maybe [name_u]Risa[/name_u] would work?

I think the teasing potential is very strong with that name.

I don’t think it sounds odd, it has a cute old man-ish feel, but I’m not sure about the first syllable tbh. A bit too problematic in today’s world.

Not to be crass, but the first syllable and the second could be easily abused by bullies (although the sentiment is lovely).

I prefer [name_m]Richard[/name_m], but I empathize with the pain that comes with serious family disagreements. [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] also are great names from The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden.

I think wanting to honor your dad is lovely, but the teasing potential is just way too much with Dickon unfortunately. Maybe if you spelled it [name_m]Deacon[/name_m]?

I 100% misread this as [name_m]Dickson[/name_m] the first few times which I don’t think is too bad since it’s a common last name but I don’t know about Dickon. I feel like it’s a mash up of two suggestive words. And it might get pronounced as [name_m]Dick[/name_m]-on or is that how it should be pronounced? Oh dear

Richard is a nice name. Especially if you’re honouring someone special.

Dickon. In Australia, you would be mercilessly teased. [name_m]Dick[/name_m]-on. So many dirty jokes to make and it’s not fair on the child. [name_m]Dickson[/name_m] is borderline for me too.

I think it’s fictional for a reason

Deacon and Dickens are reasonable alternatives IMO.

I think it sounds quite handsome, but there is definitely a lot of teasing potential. Maybe [name_u]Declan[/name_u]?

I’m sorry, in my accent, it would sound exactly like “dick in” which would be really difficult to live with in high school. It’s sweet that you want to honor your dad but I agree that you should use [name_m]Richard[/name_m] or another variation.

Maybe [name_m]Rickon[/name_m]? Could be an interesting variation that lessens the teasing potential

Thanks for the replies I should have said he’d not be called by Dickon as a name but rather his first name, but I understand (and somewhat) have the reservations you all have, thanks so much for sharing!
