Ophelia

Earlier today at the pool, I heard a mother calling to her daughter, who was about 2 or 3-- at first, I thought she was saying “[name]Amelia[/name]”, but then I realized she was saying “[name]Ophelia[/name]!”. I’ve always loved the name, but up until now, I’ve never actually met one. If you can ignore the [name]Hamlet[/name] association, it sounds just like popular and mainstream [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name]!

[name]Do[/name] you like the name [name]Ophelia[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s useable, or are the associations too negative? (BTW, I’m not naming an actual baby).

I love it and think its very usable!!

I love it! It sounds like it should be mainstream, but it’s nowhere near that and besides niche forums like this one, I never hear it being discussed as a potential name. It’s like the more awesome version of [name]Olivia[/name], and seems like it’s popularity ought to be somewhere around [name]Violet[/name]'s, but strangely…it’s not.

I really, really dislike the name [name]Ophelia[/name].
I’m sure I’m not the only who automatically thinks of pedophilia and necrophilia. I just can’t over those associations.
I also just don’t really like the sound of it. I’m not crazy about names with an F sound in it, personally.

I love [name]Ophelia[/name], and I think it is so fun that you’ve actually “met” one! I don’t really mind the association, to be honest - I prefer to just be happy it has a literary connection. I know, that sounds a bit lame. Anyway, I think [name]Ophelia[/name] is a really fun, elegant name that should be used more often! I could totally see her with a sister called [name]Helena[/name] or [name]Hermione[/name]!

I don’t particularly like the name. I’ve met one [name]Ophelia[/name] (she was in her 40’s.) and I didn’t get along too well with her, so I have negative associations with the name, which might add to my dislike of it. I can see why it could be compared to the likes of [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], etc., but to me those names are much better.

I love [name]Ophelia[/name]! It was a name I suggested to my SO when we were pregnant with my son, but he says all he can think of is ‘I’ll feel ya’. Too bad.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name] and it is on my short list BUT I read the following and found it helpful criticism to keep in mind.

One Nameberry said she couldn’t think of the name without thinking about the prefixes ped - or hemo. Two things you don’t want associated with a little girl! Also, [name]Ophelia[/name]'s can get teased when they are younger by children saying “I feel ya”. I don’t think that’s as bad as the pedophilia association though.

I’ve said this before elsewhere on here, but I’ll say it again…

I’ve always loved [name]Ophelia[/name]!

But I do admit that ‘I wanna feel ya, [name]Ophelia[/name]’ prevents us from adding it to the list.

I do like the Spanish variant [name]Ofelia[/name], which loses the ‘feel’ part of the name while maintaining the lovely flow and sound of [name]Ophelia[/name] without switching the name to something else completely. I like [name]Olivia[/name], but it’s no [name]Ophelia[/name].

[name]Ofelia[/name] was the name of the main girl in [name]Pan[/name]'s Labyrinth if anyone cares to hear the pronunciation for themselves.

I like it! Pretty, literary, serious . . . and the “fair [name]Ophelia[/name]” is not a bad saying to have attached to your name. – [name]Christy[/name] ([name]Margaret[/name])

It’s not a favourite of mine. I don’t find it as pretty as so many beautiful Shakespearian/ literary names.

I also hear ‘I feel ya’

I have been thinking about this name lately. What do you think would be a complimentary mn?

What about:

[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Rosemary[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]

I think a light, cheerful name would compliment [name]Ophelia[/name] pretty well.

I’ve always kinda liked it. Too bad hubby didn’t feel the same. Makes me think of the beautiful [name]Ophelia[/name] paintings by [name]John[/name] [name]William[/name] Waterhouse.

Irisrose - [name]Love[/name] your suggestions!

I like the idea of [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Rosemary[/name], but think it might be too long.
I do however like the feel of [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. The only thing I wonder about though, are those middle names too common?
