My SO and I need your opinion! We have finally agreed on a name for a girl that we both love : [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. It’s short and easy and classic, plus it honors his Grandfather, Rosaire. We are french Canadian. However, we just realized that our last name might clash since they are both “word” names! Our last name is [name_m]French[/name_m] for “Pear tree”. So her name would be [name_f]Rose[/name_f] Pear Tree.
SO doesn’t think it’s a problem at all, but I’m worried she will be teased in school. Also, I suppose I should add, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] has the same meaning in french in terms of the flower, but is also french for the color pink.
I would love your opinion on this, berries! We have also considered [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], but like the short and sweetness of just plain [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Thanks in advance!
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you live in a country which speaks [name_m]French[/name_m]? If the answer is no, don’t fret. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely. If the answer is yes, I’d have to reluctantly say to look elsewhere as it’d be too much. If no one is likely to pick up on it OR if it doesn’t obviously scream “[name_f]Rose[/name_f] Pear Tree” then go for it.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Eoxima! Unfortunately, we are in a very bilingual part of [name_f]Canada[/name_f], so most people are [name_m]French[/name_m] or speak [name_m]French[/name_m] here. Our daughter would also be going to a [name_m]French[/name_m] school. Thank you for your input!
Ooh, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely! Much, much nicer than [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f] - it’s so streamlined, chic and timeless. I don’t think two word names would be an absolute deal-breaker; after you’ve heard a name a few times it just becomes that person’s name, and you don’t think about the other meanings. Lots and lots of common English surnames are also words: [name_m]Wood[/name_m], [name_u]Brook[/name_u], [name_m]Field[/name_m], Hawke, etc. I really think it’s fine.
However, if you’re still wavering, can I suggest [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] as an alternative? It has the same chic, simple, international appeal of [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but avoids a double word name in [name_m]French[/name_m]. I personally love it even more than just [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

I really don’t think it will be a problem. My sisters name is [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] Woods and she sometimes jokes about her name being all about plants/gardens (because of [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] the plant and Woods being well the woods haha). But she never got teased for it, I however got rubbish all the time for my name being [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] ([name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m]). I wouldn’t worry about it.

I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], no, I adore [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but I wouldn’t use it with a word as a last name, at least not one that comes from the same “style” (flower/nature names, etc.) and creates a sentence (“pink pear tree”).
That being said, it’s not the worst thing and better than [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] Yellowstone, but I do find it a bit too odd, personally.
(If the last name was a common word last name (baker, smith, shoemaker), that would be a different story to me.)

Thanks for your help, Opheliaflora! I’m not sure if it makes a difference in your answer, but our last name is actually very common here. Obviously much more common than Peartree! (; Probably as popular as [name_m]Baker[/name_m], etc. Most people here don’t even associate it with pears anymore. Also, directly translated, it would be more like “Peartree [name_f]Pink[/name_f]” than “[name_f]Pink[/name_f] Peartree”, so it doesn’t create a sentence. Does that change your opinion at all?

I probably wouldn’t, but I have the luxury of not having a word last name and don’t have to worry about these kind of things! I do think that pink pear tree is a little much… but is the actual word for pear tree used very often (I am learning [name_m]French[/name_m], but I have no idea about these kind of things…)? [name_m]How[/name_m] common is your last name? And is [name_f]Rose[/name_f] commonly (or at least not extremely rarely) used as a first name by [name_m]French[/name_m] speaking people? If they’re both pretty commonly heard, I bet she’ll get some comments, but it probably wouldn’t be a huge deal if you love it. I think it’d be too much for me, but I agonize over the little things like that!

Probably as common as the English [name_m]Baker[/name_m], Cook, etc. And [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is also pretty common but not as much as in English. And uh I guess we don’t talk too much about Peartrees haha! I’ve never heard anyone just casually mention a pear tree and we don’t have any here
