Is [name_m]Cadogan[/name_m] too much for a boy in the US? I know we’d constantly be correcting pronunciation, but I’m not sure that’d bother me too much. I might stick it in the middle spot if it seems to be too much of a problem. What do you think? I love it, but I think it might be too much.
I think it might be a little much unfortunately - I think it’s a sweet name though!
It’s quite unheard of, harder to pronounce and spell as you’ve mentioned, but I can’t really think of any similar sounding names or nicknames that are more accessible (which usually helps the case of an unusual name).
The only person I know with a somewhat similar name was a [name_m]Kerrigan[/name_m], who had a lot of trouble with his name but at least people were very familiar with ‘[name_u]Kerry[/name_u]’.
I think it will make an amazing middle though!
(I’m assuming because of [name_m]Cadogan[/name_m], that you’re familiar/partial to Welsh names?)
What about:
[name_m]Cadoc[/name_m] - Maybe still a bit unusual, but its shorter to spell.
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u] [name_m]Cadogan[/name_m]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_m]Cadogan[/name_m]
[name_m]Macsen[/name_m]/[name_m]Maxen[/name_m] - Much more recognisable for american spelling/sounds and nicknames.
[name_m]Trevor[/name_m] - Probably one of the most recognisable names in ‘English’ from Welsh origin.
[name_m]Steffan[/name_m] - Also familiar.
Yes, the more I think about it, the more I think the middle spot will work best. It’s a tough name. I think it being both unusual AND lacking an easy pronounciation eliminates using it as a first.
I actually think the pronunciation for [name_m]Cadogan[/name_m] is fairly intuitive. That plus the similarity to other occasionally heard names, [name_u]Madigan[/name_u], [name_m]Kerrigan[/name_m], etc., makes it a winner to me. Unusual though somewhat familiar.
I was putting the stress on the wrong syllable at first, but besides that I got it right. It reminds me of the word cardigan not a bad association, just one that might make it seem a little more familiar and easier to pronounce. I think it is usable as a first, but it might be safer/easier in the middle.
As for similar names, what about [name_m]Cadmus[/name_m]. Different history but same sound.
Is it pronounced how it’s spelled? It doesn’t seem very hard to me, and I kinda like it, never heard of it in the US but unique without being invented is pretty much the cool style these days.
