I’ve got a pretty eclectic girl list, and I’d like to get your thoughts on them, and possibly some combinations too! I’m also planning on having two middle names. Have at it, please! I’ve starred the ones I’ve been favoring recently.
[name]Daphne[/name]- Pretty, but seems a little insubstantial to me.
[name]Ottilie[/name]- It’s ok, I’ve never really got into it (perhaps because it really reminds me of the brand Oatly).
[name]Ginevra[/name]- A bit ‘too-much’ for me, also very [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name].
[name]Imogen[/name]- In the UK, it is incredibly overused and I’ve become bored if it. In the US, I’d worry about pronunciation problems.
[name]Gwendolen[/name]- It’s ok.
[name]Beatrice[/name]- Very pretty!
[name]Olive[/name]- I’ve really been getting into this name recently, it’s lovely, though [name]Olivia[/name]'s popularity is a concern.
[name]Astrid[/name]- Very cute (& I know a nice one), still prefer [name]Ingrid[/name] especially as it avoids the As- teasing potential.
[name]Maeve[/name]- Again, I’ve never got into it but it’s fine.
[name]Hermione[/name]- Dislike it, sorry. Reminds me too much of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and the word hermaphrodite.
[name]Delphine[/name]- So so gorgeous! I also like [name]Delphia[/name].
[name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] is my favorite combination of those names. Somewhat off the beaten path, but the spelling and pronunciation are not difficult for either name. I have pretty classic tastes so I’m less inspired by [name]Ginevra[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name]. Good luck to you!
I really love [name]Ottilie[/name], [name]Imogen[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Olive[/name], [name]Astrid[/name], [name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Hermione[/name]. For combos…
[name]Daphne[/name]* - I quite like it! Deserves dusting off!
[name]Ottilie[/name]* - pretty, but seems more trouble than it’s worth to me.
[name]Ginevra[/name] - I quite like it and think it could work. Would be some spelling trouble.
[name]Imogen[/name]* - beautiful!
[name]Gwendolen[/name] - clunky but quite nice, I think the most widely used on the list besides [name]Daphne[/name] (in the US)?
[name]Beatrice[/name] - so sweet, love [name]Bea[/name]
[name]Olive[/name] - I prefer [name]Oliva[/name] or [name]Olivette[/name] or [name]Olivetta[/name]. I think it’s a fine name but it is not one I can ever get “into”.
[name]Astrid[/name]* - I just can’t get over that first syllable. I should, but I can’t.
[name]Maeve[/name]* - spunky, lovely, and fun!
[name]Hermione[/name]* - too HP for me.
[name]Delphine[/name] - too much dolphin and the sound is just sort of unappealing to me. So close to [name]Daphne[/name] in some ways, but I like [name]Daphne[/name] more.
[name]Maeve[/name] [name]Gwendolen[/name] or [name]Gwendolen[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] sound nice to me…so too [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Astrid[/name] (don’t mind it in the middle) or [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Olive[/name]. [name]Ginevra[/name] [name]Daphne[/name] or [name]Ginevra[/name] [name]Delphine[/name] (don’t mind [name]Delphine[/name] in the middle so much, and actually really like it with [name]Ginevra[/name]).
I like a lot of these names, especially [name]Genevra[/name]!
[name]Daphne[/name]* - nms makes me think of “daft” but its a nameberry fav so lots of people must think its stylish
[name]Ottilie[/name]* - depends on where you live, I have never heard anyone with an American or British accent say this and thought it was attractive sounding (which is only like once or twice) but I think it would be said “oh tilly” which is off putting to me, however if you are French or [name]German[/name] I think its nice sounding but nms, too cute.
[name]Ginevra[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this!
[name]Imogen[/name]* - nms sounds like a rock or something to me and not a name but [name]Imogene[/name] is ok
[name]Gwendolen[/name] - nms but it is a pretty name
[name]Beatrice[/name] - love [name]Beatrice[/name]! Classic and sweet sounding
[name]Olive[/name] - nice but I have grown tired of all [name]Olive[/name] names
[name]Astrid[/name]* - [name]Love[/name] [name]Astrid[/name] too and I dont have a problem with the “ass” sound although some people do, I think its blown out of proportion. This is a stunning name
[name]Maeve[/name]* - dont care for this nameberry fav, I imagine a bland middleaged overweight cat lady but lots of people love it
[name]Hermione[/name]* -nms I dont care for the “herm” sound but I still think its ok
[name]Delphine[/name] - pretty sounding but my response is biased: this name is so popular in [name]France[/name] and somewhat dated it’s like their version [name]Jennifer[/name], because I know so many I just cant get into it. Plus it reminds me of Dauphine, I dont know how I would react to a non-french [name]Delphine[/name], would be interesting to meet one. This name is related to the word dolphine although I dont think nameberry says that.
@thetxbelle that is an interesting take on [name]Delphine[/name]! Its super rare in the US, I believe. I’ve never met or heard about anyone with it.
I’m not sure how to chose one name over all of the others as a first…I was born before [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] happened, so [name]Hermione[/name]/[name]Ginevra[/name] would probably get a double-take but people wouldn’t think my parents named me after HP. [name]Maeve[/name] is pretty, but short, but I definitely want it as a middle at least. I like [name]Astrid[/name], but one of my best friends is named [name]Aston[/name]…too close? (We’re only 18/19 so I’m not sure if our friendship will last our entire lives, although I hope it does). [name]Daphne[/name] means the same as my mother’s name, [name]Laura[/name], which I like. [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name] seem underused but with history…
Point being;
I like ALL of them, for various reasons. I’m not sure how to go about choosing one above all others. Any tips??
[name]Daphne[/name]* - adore. [name]Daphne[/name] is a personal favorite of mine. It’s so charming, sweet, rich. I would love to meet a [name]Daphne[/name]! (I know a Daffeny but I refuse to let that count… I don’t know how Daffeny and [name]Daphne[/name] could possibly be the same, lovely name! )
[name]Ottilie[/name]* - I like it for the nn [name]Tilly[/name] but I’m not a huge fan of it otherwise. It doesn’t really seem that feminine or sweet, which is what I usually love about a name.
[name]Ginevra[/name] - I love this and the nns [name]Ginny[/name] and [name]Evie[/name], but I prefer [name]Genevieve[/name] by a mile.
[name]Imogen[/name]* - like a lot. [name]Imogen[/name] is actually one of my MNs for my [name]Daphne[/name] combo, haha ([name]Daphne[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]).
[name]Gwendolen[/name] - adore [name]Gwendolen[/name]! The character in The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name] is lovely (well, the story is lovely, and I just love the character by association, haha), and I love the nns [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Winnie[/name], and [name]Leni[/name]. [name]Dolly[/name] and [name]Dolen[/name]/[name]Dylan[/name] could even work, I think…
[name]Beatrice[/name] - I’ve never been a fan but it is a nice literary name and [name]Bea[/name] is really cute. I personally prefer [name]Beatrix[/name].
[name]Olive[/name] - lovelovelove. I would opt for the fuller [name]Olivia[/name], but I adore [name]Olive[/name] and have considered it as a nn for [name]Olivia[/name] (which is on my top 3) several times.
[name]Astrid[/name]* - [name]ADORE[/name]. I’m seriously considering [name]Astrid[/name] nn [name]Addy[/name] for my list. I love it.
[name]Maeve[/name]* - not a huge fan–I like [name]Mae[/name] a lot more, personally.
[name]Hermione[/name]* - very cool, but I think it works better as a MN.
[name]Delphine[/name] - I do like [name]Delphine[/name] a lot and it is refreshing to hear. I prefer [name]Daphne[/name] personally though.
@ author in writing; For myself. I’ve wanted to change my name for two years, and I’m transferring colleges so its now or never, by [name]September[/name].
So, since I’m 19, the HP reference wouldn’t really apply to people who didn’t know that I changed my name. Because I do love the [name]Hermione[/name] in D.H [name]Lawrence[/name], and [name]Ginevra[/name] in [name]Villette[/name]. But mainly in HP.
UPDATE: I am starting to feel less enchanted with [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Gwendolen[/name] and [name]Olive[/name]. They are beautiful and literary, but the first two are starting to feel stodgy, and [name]Olive[/name] too insubstantial. But I’m keeping them on my list, for now.
