Opinions on Begonia, Amaryllis, Larkspur and Gladiola

Really loving these beautiful and bold flowers lately. Wondering if they would fly as names, despite their daring rarity?

I especially love [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] today, and my mother likes it too.

So, I am bringing this short list of statement blooms before you, looking for honest opinions.

THANKS!!!

[name_f]Begonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
Larkspur
Gladiola

I really love [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], it ranks highly on my own list. I like the nicknames you could use for it, and also that it means “to sparkle”. My second favorite from these is Larkspur, because you could shorten it to [name_f]Lark[/name_f] and it reminds me of [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] [name_u]Drew[/name_u]. I’m not a fan of either Gladiola or [name_f]Begonia[/name_f], they sound a little fusty to me.

I think Larkspur is super cute, especially because you could use the nickname [name_f]Lark[/name_f], as the person above me has said as well. I actually know someone who named their kid this!

I think [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] could work well, too…it sounds beautiful. I don’t like [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] and Gladiola…they are too frilly for my taste and they also kind of sound like “old ladies.” But perhaps that’s just me :).

Only one that I don’t like is Gladiola. I like [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] the best.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is my favorite from your list.
NNs could by [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f]

[name_f]Begonia[/name_f] is fabulous! The flowers are so full and succulent and warmly colored. I also think the word is lovely spoken and in print.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is quite splendid too. If she didn’t like it she could go by [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or Rylla or [name_f]Rilla[/name_f] etc.

Larkspur is a favorite of mine, gorgeous perennial and a lovely name.

And Gladiola I adore, Gladdie or [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] for short.

You have great taste in names (as your taste seems to be like mine!

I love Gladiola! [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] is a great name that sets a precedent for Gladiola.

I think all of these could work, as long as they have normal nn’s to ground them. Larkspur is gorgeous! The only one that I don’t see an obvious nickname is [name_f]Begonia[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Bea[/name_f] or Go? [name_m]Just[/name_m] some thoughts

Maybe its just me, but they all sound like Pokemon names to me XD [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] might be the most usable. Larkspur has a good funky feel to it.

They might sound Pokeman to me too, except I garden.
All of these names are gorgeous flowers.

I knew a [name_f]Begonia[/name_f]! Foreign exchange student at my high school. I think it sounds a tad heavy but is still usable.
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is on and off my “official” list but always has been a contender for me (hypothetically, if I had kids).
Gladiola has a bunch of great sounds. I love old-fashioned ola names and this fits right in.
Larkspur doesn’t work for me, but I have always loved [name_f]Lark[/name_f] as a middle. I think “spur” is harsh to me. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, that’s just how it hits my ear.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] these, especially Larkspur. I’ve always thought a little girl named [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] and nicknamed [name_u]Bo[/name_u] would be adorable. [name_f]Bee[/name_f] would be a perfect nickname as well.

I think [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], Gladiola, and Larkspur are lovely. I especially like [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] and Larkspur, I can see them being sisters.

[name_f]Begonia[/name_f] is actually the only one I don’t like; the flowers are beautiful, but the word itself sounds almost vulgar to me. I’m not sure why, but I’ve always associated it with gluttony and dirtiness - I realize this is a very personal, very extreme and possibly unfounded, and silly association; however, the way I tend to pronounce it, “buh-GO-nya” sounds close to “bug on you,” which I consider a legitimate drawback. I did see suggestions for [name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_u]Bo[/name_u] as nicknames, though, and that seems like a really sweet option, and actually warms me to the idea of it being a name.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], Gladiola, Larkspur, and [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] - [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lark[/name_f], and [name_u]Bo[/name_u].

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is a great name.
Gadiola might be nice. I like the -ola sound. Larkspur is a probably a bit much.

The only one I like is [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]. The others are too much or me. I find [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] an ugly sound and Larkspur - well I just wouldn’t fancy introducing myself as Larkspur and I suppose that’s the line for me between useable and gp. Gladiola could work - not a million miles from tradional [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] and [name_f]Glad[/name_f] is a cute enough nn.

I love Larkspur the most (nn- [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_u]Perry[/name_u]…?), [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] the least.

I think Larkspur would work best in the real world, as it can be shortened to [name_f]Lark[/name_f].

Wow everyone! Thanks for the comments.

I have to agree with the poster who suggested that [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] is heavy. I think so, but I happen to swoon for clunky names (think [name_f]Hester[/name_f], [name_f]Gilda[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f]). [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] seems to fit that category - but add a touch of beautiful imagery. Dh suggested the nickname Bega (bay-gah) and I like it, though [name_f]Bee[/name_f], [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_u]Bo[/name_u], and [name_f]Nia[/name_f] from your suggestions are lovely as well!

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] seems to be getting the most love - yay!

Larkspur seems to be getting some flack for the “spur”… which makes me wonder if it would be better suited to a boy. Still. I agree with everyone that [name_f]Lark[/name_f] is a sweet and lovely nickname.

Gladiola is getting love! I am incredibly excited about this since I do love [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] and [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] as names. Gladiola seems to be bumped up with spunkiness because of the flowery image, while still maintaining that Geek Chic feel.

Keep the comments coming folks! I am enjoying hearing everyone’s opinions!!!

I used [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] as a middle for one of my girls:) I wanted it for her first with the nn [name_f]Amy[/name_f] but hubby wouldn’t go for it. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] Larkspur. Unusual but not wacky. [name_f]Begonia[/name_f] and Gladiolus are a little clunky in my opinion. I also like [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] and [name_f]Orchid[/name_f] for flower names.

My best friend has long considered using [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] for her first daughter, for reals, I want her to do it!

In order of usability (from most to least), I’d say it goes:

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
Larkspur
Gladiola
[name_f]Begonia[/name_f]

I can really see a real [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] and Larkspur, the others seem a little too clunky for me. But I like Larkspur nn [name_f]Lark[/name_f]!!!
