Opinions on Chandler

I’ve recently thinking a lot about the name [name_u]Chandler[/name_u]. I think it was really made popular by Friends, and was definitely defined as unisex after [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s brother named their daughter [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] as well. I think the name has a lot of spunk to it, but it’s not overly common (I’ve only known one person by the name) and I was wondering what people thought.

I sort of love it. I don’t usually like this kind of name, but this ones very cool to me. I don’t think of it as unisex really, more boyish, but since it’s an occupational name, I suppose it is. I agree with you, it’s spunky and not over used like other occupational names (like [name_u]Mason[/name_u]).

I like it too. I think it has a really cool quality to it that some other names are lacking. I wouldn’t use it however. Firstly because I know a [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] in real life and he doesn’t wear it well. And secondly because I think it’s too tied to Friends’ [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] [name_m]Bing[/name_m] for me to be comfortable using. But if that doesn’t bother you, I think it’s a really awesome name

Not a fan. There is the friends connection, but mostly, I see it as an uber preppy name.

I do see it as unisex because of both characters named [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] on Friends. However, I recall some episodes where the main [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] lamented and expressed a rather strong dislike for his name (part of how he convinces [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] to name the one baby that her brother let her as [name_u]Chandler[/name_u]). Also, his name is mocked on more than one occasion, Ms. Chanandler Bong, is one that comes to mind. Though, I did like the character. While I wouldn’t personally use it, I think it sound fine.
I’ve had a few students with this name (both male and female). They typically used [name_u]Chan[/name_u] as a nickname, I think [name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_f]Andie[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f] could work.

This was a joke though, as an ‘insult’ to [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] because [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] is a boys name.

Exactly. I don’t like the name in general, but I really don’t care for it on a girl.

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_u]Chandler[/name_u]! It’s in my top 10 boys names list. It is kind of preppy, but that doesn’t bother me. I think it’s so handsome!

Correct. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s brother was crazy. I wouldn’t base any decisions for my child on a sitcom character who was meant to be over the top weird.

[name_u]Chandler[/name_u] hated his name and the problems it caused him were part of a running joke.

I wouldn’t use the name for anyone.

I like it a lot for boys  It’s my cousin’s name. I don’t think it is unisex at all, although I have known a couple girls with this name. I see it as completely masculine.

I agree with aj_bear.

I like it well enough as a boy’s name. But I don’t really feel like it’s unisex.

I don’t like the Friends connection. It might not be easy to have everyone reminded of Friends when they hear your name, all your life. And I agree with above posters, it’s even more out of place on a girl.
To each their own I guess.

I think definitely no as a girls name. I know a [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] and I think it works well as a boys name. It’s not my personal style but I like it and think it is refreshing in that you don’t hear it too often. I feel like the Friends references are just going to fade and I personally wouldn’t let that deter me from using a name. Is Friends really going to be relevant to a baby born in 2013 or beyond? I feel the same way about the friends reference with the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

I see it as completely masculine as well, although I’m way too much of a Friends fan to use it. For me it would be forever tied to [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] [name_m]Bing[/name_m].

Friends. Friends. Friends.

It’s so tied to the TV show. I know the show has been off the air for ten years, but it will still be everyone’s first thought when they meet your [name_u]Chandler[/name_u].

Regardless of the TV show, I don’t like [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] as a name much at all.

[name_u]Chandler[/name_u] can be a boy name or a girl name. I quiet like it. It is a wonderful name. I prefer it for a boy though.

Am I the only person who doesn’t associate [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] with Friends? I’ve known three guys and a girl named [name_u]Chandler[/name_u]. It’s not my style at all, but I’m not opposed to seeing it used.

I think it’s fine, esp. if it’s a surname in your ancestry.

I know Friends has been off the air for some time, but I think this name is still too closely associated with the show to be all that useable.
