Opinions on Demelza

I’ve asked about [name]Demelza[/name] on other forums and the nicest thing anyone has said about it is ‘I don’t hate it’ and ‘at least it’s not made up’. Consensus seems to be that it sounds like a Disney villain. But I’m thinking people here might be a bit more open-minded about it…is it really that bad? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s useable?

People are extremely open minded here to be sure, but I just don’t care for this and really don’t see it as useable.

I can get on board with [name]Demelza[/name]! I think it’s quirky and interesting and would make a really cool choice. [name]Demi[/name]? [name]Ellie[/name]? [name]Mel[/name]? A ton of great nickname options! In the end, it’s not one I would personally use, but I would be very delighted to meet one.

I don’t mind it. It has a nice ring to it and awesome nn potential.

Ironically when you mentioned a the Disney thing…first thing I thought of when I saw it was Cruella de Vil. It does have that same ring to it.

I think it sounds like a harsh Eastern European name, so depending on your ethnic background I suppose it could work.

It’s actually Cornish, and DH and I both have British Isles heritage. The nickname I love with it is [name]Demi[/name]. I love [name]Demetria[/name] with the nickname [name]Demi[/name] as well but DH has vetoed that one.

I think that it is usable, I just don’t think that it is a very pretty name.

Well, it’s not my favorite, but when I read in the profile that someone named the heroine of their book series [name]Demelza[/name] I could totally see her: a quirky but confident girl.

It reminds me of names like [name]Dorcas[/name] and [name]Bertha[/name] and [name]Gladys[/name]. It just feels exceptionally old fashioned.
I personally don’t like it, but it’s not horrific.

I love [name]Demelza[/name]! I’ve never considered it unusable at all, but maybe it depends on where you are. Here in the UK I actually know a [name]Demelza[/name], plus the hugely successful Poldark books/series has made it much more familiar. It has great nn options (I love [name]Elza[/name] the best, I think), a great literary reference, and - in my opinion - a beautiful sound. Also, it’s the name of a hamlet in beautiful Cornwall.

I think if you and DH love it, then go for it! I have never heard that name before, it looks and sounds exotic!

A girl named [name]Demelza[/name] won a season of Australia’s Next Top Model. She wasn’t the nicest of girls.

The name is OK.

I think most folks outside of the UK will not have heard of it before. It doesn’t do anything for me, but the nick name [name]Demi[/name] is adorable, no doubt. It’s a shame your husband nixed [name]Demetria[/name]. That’s a great name!

It’s definitely different, but if you love it, go for it! Your sweet little daughter will make the name her own. I love the suggestion of [name]Elza[/name] as a nickname. Beyond cute

Have you thought of any middle names? It might make people see it in a different light as a full name. I’d probably go with an more easily recognized middle. Not too sure of what your style is, but I’ll just throw a few out there:
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Faye[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]June[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Emeline[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Demelza[/name] sounds like a mixed-up [name]Esmeralda[/name] to me! I prefer [name]Esmeralda[/name], especially with the nickname [name]Esme[/name], but I love the meaning and thought behind [name]Demelza[/name], and love the nickname [name]Demi[/name]! I say go for it, it’s pretty

It is a bit clunky, but it’s not completely unusable. It does have nice nn options.

That’s a shame. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Demetria[/name] and I only kind of like [name]Demelza[/name]. I do think its usable though! And [name]Demi[/name] is cute.

It reminds me of [name]Zelda[/name], which I love for its vintage clunk but hasn’t got a Celtic feel. I also like [name]Drucilla[/name] (and both [name]Dru[/name] and [name]Cilla[/name] as nicknames) which almost no one else likes at all, and [name]Esmeralda[/name]. Some of my Celtic-flavoured clunky favourites are [name]Morwenna[/name], [name]Elowen[/name], and [name]Kerenza[/name].

I was trying and trying to remember where I’d read [name]Demelza[/name]: It was here. http://www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2011/11/clunky-celtic.html

I’m trying to like it, since people are seeing something in it here! I just don’t though. I definitely get the Disney villain vibe that you mentioned.

Yeah, I saw that season. She was a complete bully. So that’s what I think of too. It’s usable, but I don’t have good associations with it.
