I think double-barrel names are really cool. They have a regal feel to me. You could also just give your children a single first name and single middle name, and always call them by both (I know an [name]Anna[/name] [name]Mae[/name] who is always called by her first and middle name together). If you do a double-barrel first, I recommend hyphenating it to clear up any confusion. I definitely [name]DON[/name]'T believe that you have to do a double-barrel name for all of your children. Each name that you choose should be special for you, and if some of your children have double names and some do not, I think that’s okay. My favorite double-barrels are:
[name]Katy[/name]-[name]Jane[/name] (or spelled [name]Katie[/name]-[name]Jane[/name])
[name]Billie[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]-[name]Paulina[/name]
[name]Mia[/name]-[name]Mae[/name]
[name]Amy[/name]-[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Toby[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Nella[/name]-Miette
[name]Bobbi[/name]-[name]Jo[/name]
(Side note: I will never actually use [name]Rose[/name] due to an unfortunate association, but the above names appeal to me in sound.)
Others I’ve heard:
[name]Sadie[/name]-[name]Mae[/name]
[name]Lissie[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]-[name]Rosa[/name] (pronounced [name]Ana[/name]-[name]Rosa[/name])
[name]Mira[/name]-[name]Louise[/name]
Mitta [name]Mae[/name] (gravestone find)
[name]Kittie[/name] [name]Belle[/name] (gravestone find)
An addition: I have a soft spot for the name [name]Billie[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name], not as a double-barrel first but as a first and middle, to always called by both or just “[name]Billie[/name] [name]Bea[/name].” It’s a guilty pleasure that will likely not be used.
I like them I would like to have a something [name]Rose[/name]. I only know one [name]Ella[/name]-[name]Marie[/name].
Super common where I grew up ([name]Quebec[/name]), and I never though it was weird when one sibling had a double-barrel name and the other didn’t.
Some ideas:
[name]Sarah[/name]-[name]Maude[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Sarah[/name]-[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Leah[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Kelly[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]
[name]Eva[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Eva[/name]-[name]Maude[/name]
[name]Laurie[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]-[name]Marie[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Mia[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
I like double barrelled names mainly if it’s a [name]Marie[/name] with a name (preferably French) attached to it.
I think it’s important with doubled barrelled names, even more so than with middle names, that the names fit together. It’s bad having a first and a middle that are sounding odd together, but to have a double barrelled first name with name that don’t go well together surely must be the worst.
I like:
[name]Marie[/name]-[name]Therese[/name] ([name]Marie[/name]-Thérèse; even though it’s a classic, it’s still immensely beautiful).
[name]Marie[/name]-Aglae ([name]Marie[/name]-Aglaë; Aglaë is a beautiful and underused name)
[name]Marie[/name]-[name]Charlotte[/name] (Another classic, but not bad at all)
[name]Marie[/name]-[name]Adelaide[/name] ([name]Marie[/name]-[name]Ad[/name]élaïde; [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Adelaide[/name] is also very regal and beautiful)
[name]Anna[/name]-[name]Catherine[/name] (Old Danish [name]Queen[/name]'s name, I think both names accompany each other beautifully)
Then there are the ones I probably would use, but still love, like:
[name]Marie[/name]-[name]Antoinette[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]-[name]Mathilde[/name]
[name]Marie[/name]-Bonaparte
They are quite common where I live too (french community in [name]Ontario[/name]). They aren’t my cup of tea, but there is nothing wrong with them. Here they are traditionally biblical names like: [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Paul[/name], [name]Marie[/name]-[name]France[/name], [name]Jean[/name]-Francois, [name]Pierre[/name]-[name]Luc[/name] and etc. They usually get shortened to initials like J.P. or M.F. Sometimes, they get shortened to the just the first or second name. I know several siblings, where one has a double barreled and the others don’t. I don’t think it would be an issue.
Double barreled names that I like at least a little:
[name]Sarah[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Marie[/name]-[name]France[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Jean[/name]-[name]Luc[/name]
[name]Quincy[/name]-[name]Mae[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]-[name]Bryn[/name]
[name]Sandie[/name]-[name]Gail[/name](knew a girl with this name)
[name]Zoe[/name]-[name]Quin[/name]
[name]Haylie[/name]-[name]Ann[/name]
[name]Maddie[/name] or [name]Madison[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Candace[/name] [name]Bree[/name]
[name]Ivory[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name]
[name]Ella[/name]-[name]Jay[/name]
[name]Jodi[/name]-[name]Lyn[/name](knew someone with this name too)
For me, it depends. There are some I like and are okay with, then there are some I strongly dislike. Spellings also depends with me.
Like:
[name]Ana[/name]-[name]Sophia[/name],
[name]Sarah[/name]-[name]Opal[/name],
[name]Lily[/name]-[name]Rose[/name],
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Jane[/name],
[name]Sara[/name]-[name]Jane[/name],
([name]Isa[/name])[name]Bella[/name]-[name]Marie[/name] (met a girl with this name).
Dislike:
MaryCathrine (first of all, to me, its too long and I don’t like how there’s no space between the names. I also know girl with this name.)
I vote Nay, I think it looks very eighties. However, there are some that bring a bit of flair. These do not include [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Ann[/name] [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Jane[/name] [name]Sara[/name]-[name]Joy[/name] etc. etc. [name]One[/name] I think has a certain vintage flair that could work well today would be [name]Emily[/name]-[name]Alice[/name] and [name]Frankie[/name]-[name]Jean[/name]. I really don’t like the hyphen though.
I know a [name]Lily[/name]-[name]Sophia[/name] (not sure if they hyphenate or not)
and a Brandilyn (one word)
I think its fine. Its not weird if only one sister had it, (think [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Kate[/name] and [name]Ashley[/name] [name]Olsen[/name]). Actually I think its a little odd if there is three or more girls all with double-barrel names. Its almost like the parents really couldn’t pick just one, but I know it is a tradition in a lot of circles.
I like some double names and even if I don’t use one I’ll probably still ending up calling my daughter my her first and middle. I actually call my son by his first and middle fairly often. Some that I like:
[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]
[name]Sophie[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Kate[/name]
[name]Ella[/name]-[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Ava[/name]-[name]Joy[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]-[name]Elise[/name]
I would be more likely to use it for just one child than all of them. I think it would feel like too much of a good thing to have several little girls with double names. I’d get tongue tied.
I also like combo names that can be spelled together without a hyphen like [name]Rosemary[/name] and [name]Marianne[/name].
I think it greatly depends on the names and the circumstances. In your case, where it’s a family tradition, I think it’s fine! Like previous posters, I also wouldn’t bat an eye at a sibset with one double-barrel name. I might use one myself someday since my last name sounds terrible with -a ending first names.
I know a [name]Jenny[/name] [name]Kate[/name] and a [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Grace[/name] (neither of which spells her name with a hyphen. I don’t think hyphens are all that necessary.) And I’ve always liked the name of the girl from the [name]Clifford[/name] books/tv show, [name]Emily[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name].
I’m [name]Zoie[/name]-[name]Anne[/name]. I don’t like it. [name]Ive[/name] never gone by the whole thing. I know a [name]Mary[/name] [name]Lou[/name] who goes by the full thing. I know a [name]Hailey[/name]-[name]May[/name] too. She goes by [name]Hailey[/name]. Honestly I’m on the fence about it. It could be nice- even give her an option if she wants to be called by the first or second name or even both. It really depends on the names I suppose.
Definitely Yay! [name]Love[/name] 'em. I never could get my husband on board though.
Where I live, they’re more trashy than anything, especially certain combos.
[name]Lily[/name]/[name]Evie[/name]/[name]Ava[/name]/[name]Ella[/name]/[name]Gracie[/name] - [name]May[/name]/[name]Rose[/name]/[name]Ann[/name]/[name]Grace[/name] are just everywhere, in various spelling guises, and I just find them tacky, unoriginal and dull. Certain combos that I’ve seen don’t even flow, either.
I like Libbyj’s suggestion of [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]. [name]Said[/name] in a French accent, it’s gorgeous.
I love double-names! My daughter has one. Of course, this is only if the names really go together. A successful double-name enhances both aspects of the name to create a super special dimension!
If it’s done right, I really love it. But I just don’t love any double-barrel that comes along. A few double-barrels I love:
[name]Eve[/name]-[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name]
[name]Ella[/name]-[name]Kate[/name] (I’d use it as a nn for [name]Ella[/name] [name]Catherine[/name], but still)
[name]Emmy[/name]-Roo (a double barrel nn for something like [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]/[name]Emilia[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]/etc.)
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] (met the cutest little girl named [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] at my last job–I thought it was so sweet and refreshing!)
