opinions on Joan

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name [name_u]Joan[/name_u] as a first name? Thoughts?

[name_u]Joan[/name_u] is my mother’s name and I love it. Between [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m] and [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_m]Rivers[/name_m], it has a great history. It might sound dated for some people but I think it’s going to circle back around because of its quiet elegance, much like [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has recently. Also makes a fine middle name.

Yes! I love the name [name_u]Joan[/name_u], it’s one of my favorite one syllable first names for girls. I think it’s classic and strong.

I am so glad to hear someone considering [name_u]Joan[/name_u]!!! I think it has great strength and history. In addition to [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m], which is my first association, its popularity in the early 20th century makes me think of the Greatest Generation and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] the Riveter. I have actually met two young Joans who go by [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] and it is pretty adorable. I think “[name_f]Joanie[/name_f]” works nicely as a sister name to a lot of nicknames that are popular right now.

I think it’s a very sweet name, like an updated version of [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

I’ll be the devil’s advocate and say I’m not a fan myself. It’s my mother’s middle name, which is maybe why I don’t like it – I tend to dislike names for babies that I associate with people, somehow it ruins it even when I love the person. Other than that though, it just doesn’t have a pleasant sound to my ear. The -oan sound does not work for me. [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] I think is kind of sweet, I’d like to meet a little [name_f]Joanie[/name_f]. I’m more of a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] person myself.

I love [name_u]Joan[/name_u]. It’s classic and strong and has a great usage throughout history.

I like [name_u]Joan[/name_u], and I think we’ll see more of it, though I imagine it will be a few more years before it really takes off again.

PP has s good point about people and names. A [name_u]Joan[/name_u] slightly older than myself particularly left a great impression on me. With fiery red hair and a St. surname we expected she would try for modelling but became a much honored & revered nurse.
[name_u]Joan[/name_u] is not just historically significant but so classy to me.

It’s a very sweet name but it’s a little plain and frumpy to me, it just feels like it needs a few more years to lose that vibe. But if you like it go for it!

[name_u]Joan[/name_u] is classic, and one of my favorites, historical with a bit of old Hollywood. Go for it!

Very strong, nice choice

For me it’s very much a 1940s name & dated. However, I’m also likely one generation older than most everyone here, though, so it’s not surprising that I have a different opinion on it. But even if I didn’t find it to be dated, it falls in to the family that sounds lugubrious to my ear: any name that rhymes w/moan. [name_u]Joan[/name_u], [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]/Coan/Koan, [name_f]Mona[/name_f], & [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I love this name, as someone who grew up knowing a [name_u]Joan[/name_u], I think it would be nice. I also like [name_f]Joanne[/name_f], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Johanna[/name_f]. But [name_u]Joan[/name_u] is beautiful in its own way.
