[name]Kellan[/name] isn’t girly. If someone wanted to name a son after a [name]Kelly[/name] but felt it was too androgynous, I would suggest [name]Kellan[/name]. [name]Kellan[/name] is trendy (two syllables, ends in -n, Celtic/Irish), but I wouldn’t roll my eyes to see it used. [name]Kellan[/name] feels light and cheery and even somewhat refreshing. It has a completely different feel than [name]Kayden[/name].
[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Kellan[/name] would be a great choice. My dad has gone by his middle name all his life and never had an issue with it. The only “issue” I can imagine it causing would be your son having to correct people who call him [name]Joseph[/name]. “Actually, I go by [name]Kellan[/name].” Problem solved.
ETA: I correct myself. My dad did have one little problem with going by his middle name. [name]One[/name] of his first jobs was at K-[name]Mart[/name], and he was too shy to say anything when his first name got put on his name tag instead of his middle name. What’s more, he got “[name]Denise[/name]” instead of “[name]Dennis[/name].” It makes for a funny story now, though.
I think [name]Kellan[/name] is a nice name. I don’t really see it as being trendy. [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Kellan[/name] actually sounds really nice in my opinion. I have no experience with the middle name issue, but just wanted to say I think it is a good choice.
Thanks for the opinions especially from people with such nice names of their own! I am feeling better and better about the name.
southern.maple is right that [name]Kellan[/name] is on-trend, following the pattern of names like [name]Evan[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Logan[/name], and the -ayden tribe. (Though I agree it has a different feel than [name]Kayden[/name].) It was at #363 last year, if I remember the Nameberry entry correctly, and supposedly the actor [name]Kellan[/name] Lutz, who played a Twilight vampire, has influenced its rise. Being only in the 300’s certainly isn’t super popular, though. My guess would be that [name]Kellan[/name] will continue to rise for a while, but that’s only a guess, and I wouldn’t worry about it if you like the name. I think it’s fresh-sounding and masculine.
And I really like [name]Joseph[/name]. I know several people who go by their middle names, and I don’t think it’s much of an issue. He’ll probably have to correct a few people in the course of his lifetime, that’s all.
Congratulations and best wishes!
I picked that it’s both trendy and a great boy’s name. Trendy isn’t always a bad thing. I think it’s very handsome. And while it’s trendy I don’t think it’s overly popular.
Well…I am getting more and more convinced to use the name. It seems most have a favorable impression of it and that’s very important to me. Thanks for taking the time to write your opinions!
Going by your middle name can be very bothersome.
That being said, [name]Joseph[/name] is a handsome, strong classic that will last a life time and using it before the non traditional / more trendy [name]Kellan[/name] can be a very good idea. A compromise could be to use a double first name - personally I find [name]Joseph[/name]-[name]Kellan[/name] very dashing.
Have you considered [name]Kelan[/name] (kee.lan or kay.lan)? It’s the English form of Caolan or Caellainn, both of which are a legitimate Irish Saints.
I have to say I think [name]Kelan[/name] sounds feminine, but I want to look into the saints you mentioned. I don’t see why they couldn’t be patrons of a [name]Kellan[/name] as well. Thank you!
