Setting aside [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] pronounced Loo-see-uh, what do you think of [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] pronounced as Loo-shuh. Maybe more as a middle name than a first name.
I think it will 99% of the time be mispronounced.
Putting it in the middle name spot could be sort of a double-edged sword - it would be used a lot less than the first name, but because of that I think it would be mispronounced more (you don’t often get the opportunity to correct people on the pronunciation of a name they rarely use). In the middle name spot it does open up the possibility of using “[name_u]Lou[/name_u]” as a suffix to the first name - for example, [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] could be [name_f]Evie[/name_f]-[name_u]Lou[/name_u]. Not sure if that appeals to you.
As to the name itself, I find LOO-sha a less intuitive pronunciation than loo-SEE-a and loo-CHEE-a - I know it’s a legitimate pronunciation, but it’s not the one I think of first. I guess it feels heavier and a bit less musical to me than the other pronunciations, which is a strike against it to me, but obviously if it’s the one you like, it’s the one you like. And for all I know, maybe it’s the more common pronunciation where you live - any sense of that?
I don’t know if this makes any difference to you, but if you’re interested in getting to the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I think LOO-sha sounds less like it than loo-SEE-a and loo-CHEE-a do, though obviously you could use it anyway.
I’ve always pronounced it as LOO-see-uh and never LOO-shuh, although I knew a girl who pronounced it LOO-chee-uh, like Luchia. As a middle name it will rarely be written on paper and if her friends ask, she can use the proper pronunciation so I doubt there’d be a problem. I don’t like that pronunciation though.
I would think it was LOO-see-uh or LOO-chee-uh before I would guess LOO-shuh. I prefer the first two to LOO-shuh. But I think all three pronunciations are acceptable and you should use whichever you like best.
Also, I think it’s a beautiful name, with a lovely meaning (“light”), and translates internationally, albeit with different pronunciations.
[name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], and I pronounce it loo-CHEE-ah:) but I think if I didn’t know the pronunciation, I would say loo-sha:) personally, I prefer loo-CHEE-ah to loo-sha or loo-SEE-ah anyway! I think it’s such a pretty name, and I would much rather it was my first name than my middle!
Loo-shuh is my preferred pronunciation, but I also love loo-see-ah and loo-chee-ah. it is a gorgeous name all 3 ways imo!
The [name_f]Lu[/name_f]-shuh pronunciation always seemed more intuitive to me. Not sure if it might be because of regional difference or what. It’s a great name no matter how you pronounce it.
I actually pronounce it loo-shuh first looking at it. Loo-see-uh would take me a second to think of. [name_m]Both[/name_m] pronunciations are correct, they just come from different cultures. I think it depends on where you live for how most people will say it.
