My husband said he really likes [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], which I like too but am not sure “goes” with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. Thoughts? Also, what would you call a kid named [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]?
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] was my mother’s name, she passed away two years ago so I would really like to use this name to honor her, but my husband doesn’t like it.
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f], this was suggested on my other thread in reference to activist [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_m]Parks[/name_m]. My husband liked it a lot.
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f], was also suggested on the other thread in reference to [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Steinem. I really like it, perhaps a bit more than the names above (aside from [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]), but I worry about the Steinem association because I really don’t agree with her stance on transsexuals, my best friend is a trans woman.
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t use name you don’t feel 100% sure, like [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]. you mum and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] trumps [name_f]Gloria[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is lovely with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. It doesn’t need a nickname, but I think if you wanted something cute to call an [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] as a baby, something like [name_u]Leaf[/name_u]/Leafie, [name_u]Red[/name_u], Pumpkin, [name_f]Maple[/name_f] or some other very “autumny” name would make a super fun nickname. As far as a nickname actually derived from the name [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], I’m not sure. Maybe Auto/[name_m]Otto[/name_m]?
I love [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]. A beautiful name to honour a beautiful woman in your life. I’d want to use this name at least in the middle.
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]. Also very beautiful, and a beautiful person to have your daughter named after. This seems to be the one that your husband and you agree on most.
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]. This is a really cute name. Are your feelings for it strong enough to overcome the negative?
I like [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]. All the best!
I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]! It’s one of my favorites! I wouldn’t use a nickname personally but you could just use something “autumny”, like the pp said.
I like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] the best personally, though [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] both have good historic meaning. I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is very cute. I don’t think that it sounds bad with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f], but I don’t think they’re necessarily the same style. If that matters to you, I think that something a bit more old fashioned but not overused would match well as sibling names. I also think it’s really important that both of you love the name, so unfortunately I think [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] may be off the table, at least as a first name. You seem to like the idea of a strong female namesake, maybe consider other historical figures. A few suggestions:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] ([name_m]Austin[/name_m]/Goodall)
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ([name_m]Potter[/name_m]) ([name_f]Bea[/name_f] as a nickname?)
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] (Nightingale)
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ([name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m]) ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_f]Elle[/name_f] as a nickname?)
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] (Tubman/[name_m]Beecher[/name_m] Stow)
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] ([name_f]Queen[/name_f] of [name_f]England[/name_f])
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] (Fawcett) ([name_f]Millie[/name_f] as a nickname?)
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (Pankhurst) ([name_f]Emma[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f] as a nickname?)
Of these I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (if the double V isn’t too much) sound best with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. Other names that might go well: [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I think your original choice of [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is very nice, and if you love it, definitely use it! [name_m]Just[/name_m] throwing out some new considerations.
I like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] the most. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] are not my style but I think they’re fine names. There are plenty of other notable women named [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] so I don’t think anyone would associate your [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]'s name with [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Steinem.
I really like the suggestions of [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. And [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] does sound beautiful. I wish my husband would be more helpful!
I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is lovely. Only two syllables so wouldn’t need to be shortened, but I guess you could just call her A? [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] is sweet too, and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] is too formal for my taste, but that’s probably from a few UK connotations… [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Hunniford!
I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] sounds lovely with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. It somehow makes them sound more fresh and lively.
I love [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]! I understand if your husband doesn’t want to use it as a first name, but I think it would be really rude and unfair of him to nix it as a middle name considering it would be in honor of your mother. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] are both very sweet. It sounds a bit too similar to [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], though.
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is great! I actually like it the most with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f].
I love love love [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], but I don’t think it sounds great with [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]. However, I think you should read this:
I particularly like [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] for you.
Nothing wrong with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] at all, but I know from your other thread that meaningful names are important to you.
Of course, loving a name is meaningful in its own right. I do think Autumn would combine really well with Rose, Lydia or Gloria. It’s nice and crisp, which offsets the -(i)a endings really well: Autumn Rose, Rosa Autumn, Lydia Autumn, Gloria Autumn.
If you’re worried about the Steinem association but like the name, Wikipedia has a list of other famous Glorias:
Disclaimer: most of the info I’m giving from now on just comes from Wikipedia, and might need to be checked
Would any of those be suitable namesakes? [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] [name_m]Blackwell[/name_m] or [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Feldt for activism (I don’t know much about Feldt, but a quick google didn’t throw up any obviously transphobic opinions)? [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] [name_m]Naylor[/name_m] for literature, [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] [name_f]Gaynor[/name_f] for music? [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] for acting/singing/activism?
Some more interesting Lydias (not that your mother isn’t namesake enough!): Lydia Becker (suffragette and amateur scientist), Lydia Cabrera (anthropologist and poet), Lydia Wahlström (feminist, historian, author), Lydia Foy (made legal challenges regarding gender recognition, raised awareness of transgender rights)
Yellowplums, you are amazing! Thank you for the link! I will talk about the name [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] with my friend this week, although I’m sure she’ll say that [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] being problematic is all in my Head lol.
A_r, thank you for the link as well! I can’t believe I letting [name_f]Gaynor[/name_f] and [name_m]Naylor[/name_m] slip my mind. Two amazing, Inspiron women! I will look at your link.
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] --doesn’t exactly “match” [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f], but I think it could perfectly well be used alongside them. I see the name [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] as pretty much nickname-proof. Personally, this is my least favorite on your list, but that’s just a question of personal taste; I also think it’s also a very nice name, and one you don’t run across too often, but that everyone knows (which is a good balance).
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] --this is beautiful, it honors your mother, and it pairs really nicely with [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_m]Milo[/name_m]. If your husband is against using it as a first name, I hope you can use it in the middle!
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] --my personal favorite here, both for the powerful namesake, and because I think it goes really well with [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_m]Milo[/name_m]. Great that your husband likes it (and I assume you, too, if it’s on the short list now?). Also the nickname possibility of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (as in [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] the Riveter? More feminist heritage?) appeals to me too.
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] --I think this is a name due for a come-back, and I don’t think people would assume that you named her specifically after [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Steinem. If you are using [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] in as a middle name, then you get repeating “ia” endings for first and middle names, which may or may not be something you care about. If it’s your favorite (second to [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]) and you can get your husband on board, I say go for it. I think it works well with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f], too.
In any case I would use [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] in the middle spot if you’re able to.
I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is lovely and goes really well with [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. I agree with the poster who said it somehow makes the other names seem more lively. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] is a lovely combination.
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] doesn’t need a nickname, but if you really want to have one I like the idea of finding an autumny word to use. Another idea is to see if any of these ‘T’ starting nicknames could work: Topsy, [name_f]Tippi[/name_f], Tiggy.
