My first question is how would you pronounce this name at first glance? And what do you think of the name?
It’s supposed to be pronounced muh-klin, not mac-lyn. If you pronounced it the latter way, do you think the spelling Maclin would help at all?
Second question is what middle name do you think would sound good?I’m having a really difficult time deciding on that.
Also, do you think Maclyn/Maclin is too close to [name]Darwin[/name]? Because that is far and away my favorite boy’s name and I don’t want the names in a sibset to be too similar.
Any opinions and/or suggestions about the name are welcome! I know it’s a little different, but it’s the name of a scientist, and I want to include a name of a scientist or free-thinker in my (future) kids’ names.
[name]Reading[/name] the title of the thread, I assumed it was a tryndeigh creation based on Mc surnames, for a girl. I also pronounced it ‘mac-lyn’. Spelling it Maclin makes it look less feminine and it does clear up the pronunciation, but then you would be making up a name (and not really honoring the person you wanted to).
[name]Even[/name] though I doubt most people will know about the scientist, the sibset would bother me more for its matchiness (two scientist names) than similarity in sound.
I read it as mac-lyn, not muh-klin. I don’t think spelling it Maclin would help, because I just see the ‘mac’ and want to make that a ‘mack’ sound.
If anything, I would think dropping the ‘a’ and spelling McLyn of McLynn would have more of the desired pronunciation.
Overall I would not think of it as a scientist, and instead as a difficult variation of other ‘mac’ names, like [name]Mackenzie[/name], [name]Mackenna[/name], etc.
But there are plenty of scientist and freethinkers to use as namesakes out there.
I know three unrelated baby boys named [name]Darwin[/name], Turing, and Tesla…
…but, I would prefer using a name that does not quite scream ‘I’m named after a famous person!’ myself.
Like using [name]Russell[/name], named after [name]Bertrand[/name] [name]Russell[/name], or [name]Carl[/name] after [name]Carl[/name] [name]Sagan[/name].
I did pronounce it mac-lyn, but I can see how it’s supposed to be muh-klin. I agree with the previous poster who suggested that McLyn might be more likely to give you the desired pronounciation. I also agree with the previous poster who thought it seemed like a girls name, because I thought that, too. Although, with a different spelling it could seem less feminine, because it doesn’t sound feminine when pronounced that way you want it.
Thanks for all of the feedback, I definitely appreciate it. After reading everyone’s comments I’m thinking that Maclyn is out.
And I really love the suggestion of [name]Russell[/name]! Thank you, sparkplugbug
So, instead of Maclyn, what do we think of [name]Lincoln[/name]? Or [name]Harris[/name]?
I think that [name]Darwin[/name], [name]Russell[/name], [name]Lincoln[/name], and [name]Harris[/name] all sound great individually and together. But I have to admit, my personal favorite of the last three is [name]Russell[/name], followed by [name]Harris[/name], then [name]Lincoln[/name].
But I may just be biased toward the more unusual (in my world) [name]Russell[/name] because I know quite a few [name]Harris[/name]’ (young and old).
Wow…you nailed both unique names we thought of for boys…Maclin and [name]Lincoln[/name]…[name]Mac[/name] and [name]Linc[/name] for short. I love the name Maclin for a boy. My hubby, a football fan loves how it would sound on the PA for football games. Coincidentally, I chose it based on a pro football player–[name]Jeremy[/name] Maclin…[name]Just[/name] thought I would share. It was one of few times I heard anyone suggest it on NB!
I’m actually really glad to see someone else likes the name! I think it’s really cool, but I actually got mine from a scientist. Lol.
Out of curiosity, how are you pronouncing it?
