Opinions On Name-Please Be Honest!

My mother is from the Netherlands, so although I’m an American through and through, when I was born, she chose to give me a Dutch name. In college, she had a friend named Aleydis, and she had always loved and been interested in it. It’s a very old Dutch variant of the [name_m]German[/name_m] names Adelheid and Adelaide. Some Dutch Nuns throughout history held the name, but it fell out of use and is very uncommon nowadays. There are fewer than five Aleydis’s in the world today, and even in the Netherlands I get questioned about my name.

What do you think of it? What would you rate it out of 10? Could you explain your feelings around it? I would love to hear people’s thoughts about it, even if they dislike it (I have disliked it at some points in my life as well), because I find people’s perceptions about names so interesting.

What middle name would you pair it with? Who would you picture wearing it?

Also, as a bit of help, the name can be pronounced two ways:

Uh-lay-diss (more [name_m]German[/name_m], more like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f])

Or, Uh-lie-diss (more Dutch, and more similar to [name_f]Adelheid[/name_f])

I think it’s beautiful! Out of ten I’d rate it eight and a half (most of my favorites fall at about a nine or nine and a half rating). Where I live, while it would certainly be uncommon, I don’t think it would be that out of place. Ooh, there are so many pretty middle names it could go with. I’ll list some more common middles as well as some more unusual ones.
Aleydis [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_u]June[/name_u]
Aleydis [name_u]Fable[/name_u]
Aleydis [name_f]Glory[/name_f]
Aleydis Brave
Aleydis [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
([name_m]Just[/name_m] noticed that all of those were word middles… hope you like some of them!)

Quite possibly this isn’t you at all, but Aleydis seems like a reader. She’s very open to new concepts while still having very strong opinions of her own.

Thank you for giving me a new name to consider! I just might add Aleydis to my list.

Thank you for responding! I’m glad you liked it, and I enjoyed reading your middle name ideas-they were all so pretty! I liked the way you used shorter middle names because Aleydis is more of a longer name. And your assumption of me was pretty accurate!

I think I’d give it a 4 out of 10. I don’t love how it sounds–when I begin to say it, I feel like it should have a different ending than it does. I have a generic American accent, but when I say Uh-lay-diss, it actually sounds a little southern to me. [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] twangy, like I can picture it on an older southern woman. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is much softer and rolls off the tongue more easily.

I love this name! I’m easy to please, but I would give Aleydis a 10/10. It’s highly unusual, but, in my opinion, very wearable. It doesn’t sound much like any other name- name families like the [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]/[name_f]Hayley[/name_f]/[name_f]Kaylie[/name_f]/[name_f]Kylie[/name_f] or [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]/[name_f]Alexa[/name_f]/[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] crowds can feel tired, and Aleydis seems quite unusual. At the same time, it doesn’t have any negative associations that I know of, it isn’t terribly difficult to pronounce or spell (I pronounce it uh-[name_m]LAY[/name_m]-dis). It sounds “name-y” and has a long history of use. Personally, I like the sound, but that’s very subjective.

[name_u]Allie[/name_u] is an accessible, simple nickname for an Aleydis that wants to fit in, and there are lots of other nickname possibilities. Leydis, Leydi, and Leysi (like [name_f]Lacey[/name_f]) could all work.

Aleydis is a really attractive name. 8/10
Second names I am not good at… I like something unusual
and just cant come up with a idea right now sorry - but i did want to say how much I like Aleydis.

When looking at it initially, I was wondering, “Is that A-lay or A-lee? [name_f]Aley[/name_f]-diss or [name_f]Aley[/name_f]-di?”
Once you learn how to say it, it is beautiful. I have a difficult-to-pronounce name and so generally shy away from this situation. So I would favor the more common but familiar [name_f]Elena[/name_f] or [name_f]Alanis[/name_f].

I think that’s really pretty, actually! I’m surprised that it’s almost extinct, I think it would fit in with today’s names.

I like it pronounced uh-lie-dis, uh-lay-dis sounds like elitist when I say it. But in another accent both would be beautiful!

I like:

Aleydis [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
Aleydis [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_f]Jade[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_u]Rey[/name_u]
Aleydis [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
Aleydis [name_u]Love[/name_u]
Aleydis [name_u]Story[/name_u]

Thank you for introducing me to a new name! Sometimes I feel like I know almost all of them because I’ve done so much research LOL

I really like it, probably an 8 or 9 out of ten. I find most ‘A’ names sweet anymore and the ‘y’ in the middle makes it feel very soft and feminine. Although I can see similarities to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], it really is a name like no other (thats a good thing!)

At first I pronounced it aal-ed-iss, but after seeing your pronunciations I think Uh-LEY-diss is how I’d say it.

I think I like it. I’ll rate it 6/10 -maybe even 7- and I automatically pronounce it the [name_m]German[/name_m] way.
