Opinions on our list please! Baby #4

Our other childrens names are [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Theo[/name]), [name]Matilda[/name] ([name]Tilly[/name]), & [name]Philippa[/name] ([name]Pippa[/name]). We’re still looking for suggestions of course, anything three syllables that is easy to pronounce and ends in A with some sort of nickname potential is great! Could you tell me what you think of these?

[name]Agatha[/name] - My husband loves it, I love it, I love that I think of [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Christie[/name], one of my favourite authors, and our other children’s names tie into literary or movie names as well, it fits out requirements, but I’m not sold, I can imagine a cute baby with the name, and we could call her [name]Aggie[/name], but it seems so, and I’m lacking words here, harsh? I don’t know, I hope it grows on me.

[name]Cecilia[/name] - Too sweet, means blind, four syllables, hate the nickname Cece, husbands favourite name ever. Ugh

[name]Clarissa[/name] - The opposite of [name]Agatha[/name], still has all we want in a name, but it’s REALLY pretty, what if she wants to be tough? I always loved the name [name]Clara[/name], but it seems like this is almost too beautiful a name. It’s my favourite name though, it just doesn’t seem to fit.

[name]Claudia[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it, but I hate [name]Claud[/name] or [name]Dia[/name] as a nn, so…?

[name]Estella[/name] - Husband loves it, it’s not my cup of tea until I realize I can give her the middle name [name]Meg[/name] for my [name]SIL[/name] and then call her [name]Esme[/name]! yay!

[name]Irina[/name] - I don’t love it for a second, then I think of [name]Irina[/name] Sendler and I love it a lot, it’s a great name, but it has no nicknames.

[name]Leonora[/name] - One of my husbands favourites, but we can’t agree on how to pronounce it! [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nore-uh or [name]Len[/name]-or-uh? I don’t like the seconnd one. Or the first one, if I’m being really honest.

[name]Lucia[/name] - Makes me wish [name]Pippa[/name] didn’t have [name]Louisa[/name] as one of her middle names. Except not really. Also, it’s supposed to be pronounced Lucheeuh right? I say [name]Lucy[/name]-a, which annoys even me.

[name]Lydia[/name] - It has family ties, but I can’t think of nicknames past Lydi or [name]Dia[/name], and I don’t like those. It also seems perfect to shoot up in popularity.

[name]Tabitha[/name] - If I had the baby and it turned out to be a girl today, this is the name I would use. [name]Tibby[/name], [name]Tabby[/name], [name]Beth[/name], I love it.

Congratulations!

Your list:
[name]Agatha[/name] - I agree with you, there’s something very harsh about [name]Agatha[/name]. Not my style, I’m afraid.
[name]Cecilia[/name] - I think it’s lovely, and [name]Celia[/name] might be an alternative nn but if the meaning bothers you then I can understand that.
[name]Clarissa[/name] - Beautiful name, but I agree with you, maybe too feminine. I do think the nn [name]Clara[/name] could help with that though - it’s more neutral if she wanted. I have a very feminine name (which I love) but have always gone by my nn which is shorter and less frilly and suits me well.
[name]Claudia[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] this name. I have only met one [name]Claudia[/name] and she only went by [name]Claudia[/name].
[name]Estella[/name] - I think it’s lovely on its own. I’m not an [name]Esme[/name] fan but if you are, the combination does seem to work well. Although I don’t think [name]Estella[/name] [name]Meg[/name] flows very well.
[name]Irina[/name] - Like, but I prefer the other names on your list.
[name]Leonora[/name] - Doesn’t sound like this is right for you!
[name]Lucia[/name] - You could pronounce this the Italian way - loo-chee-ya - or loo-sha or loo-shee-ya. I prefer the first, but if pronunciation is going to bother you, I would drop it.
[name]Lydia[/name] - I’m not a [name]Lydia[/name] fan.
[name]Tabitha[/name] - This to me seems to be absolutely perfect. It’s gorgeous and I think it goes perfectly with your other children’s names. There’s a minor literary association with [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] ([name]Tabitha[/name] Twitchett) there too. I probably wouldn’t look any further!

I’m not sure you’re looking for anything else, but here are a few suggestions if none of the above feels like THE name:

[name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Cynthia[/name]
[name]Georgina[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Natasha[/name]
[name]Teresa[/name]

I love [name]Georgina[/name] with [name]Philippa[/name] and [name]Mathilda[/name]. My first vote still goes for [name]Tabitha[/name] though!

Your children have gorgeous names! (:

[name]Agatha[/name] ” Really, I do love [name]Agatha[/name]. I dislike the nickname [name]Aggie[/name] for some reason, though” [name]Agatha[/name]”s really gorgeous, even if it does seem slightly harsh, with the ”ag”.
[name]Cecilia[/name] ” It”s not exactly a favorite name, but it”s okay. [name]How[/name] about [name]Cicily[/name]/ [name]Cecily[/name], for instance? There was a [name]Saint[/name] named [name]Cecilia[/name], randomly. (: [name]Cecil[/name], Celle, [name]Cassia[/name], Ceciliane.
[name]Clarissa[/name] ” [name]Clarissa[/name] is REALLY pretty, like you”ve said. It”s gorgeous, really. [name]Clara[/name], [name]Clio[/name], etc, you know, I like those as well, and they”re a little more” toned down, in a sense. But, [name]Clarissa[/name]”s always going to be beautiful.
[name]Claudia[/name] ” [name]Claudia[/name] is beautiful! One of my favorites. However, I think [name]Claudia[/name]”s better without a nickname, unless you”re set on using one; [name]Claudia[/name]”s just such a beautiful name, I don”t think it needs a nickname at all.
[name]Estella[/name] ” Not too fond of it. I much prefer just [name]Estelle[/name]; it”s nicer, to me. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Estrella[/name]? I”m not sure on nicknames for it, though. [name]Just[/name] so you know, the spelling ”[name]Esme[/name]” is the masculine version ” Esmee or [name]Esme[/name] with the accent mark are the feminine versions, and very pretty!
[name]Irina[/name] ” [name]Irina[/name]”s very attractive. (: I think I prefer [name]Irene[/name], though.
[name]Lenora[/name] ” [name]Lenora[/name] IS pretty, but I prefer [name]Loretta[/name], I think. (: I”m also uncertain on the pronounciaton” gah.
[name]Lucia[/name] ” Oh, I say it [name]Lu[/name]-see-a. I had no clue how to pronounce it in the first place. It”s alright” but I like [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Lucille[/name], etc, more.
[name]Lydia[/name] ” The name is gorgeous, but might be destined for popularity, like you”ve said. [name]Lidie[/name], [name]Liddie[/name], [name]Lyda[/name], [name]Lidya[/name], [name]Lida[/name], [name]Lydie[/name], [name]Lidia[/name]?
[name]Tabitha[/name] ” [name]Tabitha[/name] is stunning! I really do love it; it”s a stunning choice. <3

I really find all of the names you”ve considered lovely. [name]Tabitha[/name], [name]Claudia[/name], [name]Irina[/name], and [name]Agatha[/name] are probably my favorites, though. 8) I do love [name]Clarissa[/name], but like you”ve said: a little too pretty, frilly, and so on.

irina could of the NNs renie, rene, irene

For the [name]Lucia[/name] problem you could go with [name]Lucille[/name] (which would also combine your DH’s name [name]Cecilia[/name]). Or [name]Lucinda[/name]. Easier to pronounce and comes with the nn’s [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Cindy[/name] or [name]Elle[/name]. Maybe even [name]Ella[/name].

A few other ideas off the top of my head.
[name]Aurora[/name] nn [name]Rory[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Harry[/name]/[name]Harrie[/name]
[name]Carlotta[/name] nn [name]Lottie[/name], [name]Carla[/name]
[name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Fran[/name]/[name]Franny[/name], [name]Chess[/name]
[name]Miranda[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name] nn [name]Cordy[/name], [name]Delia[/name]
[name]Annabella[/name] nn [name]Anna[/name]/[name]Annie[/name], [name]Bella[/name]/[name]Bella[/name]
[name]Roseanna[/name] nn [name]Rosie[/name], [name]Anna[/name]/[name]Annie[/name]

[name]Carolina[/name] nn [name]Carrie[/name], [name]Lina[/name] (lee-na)
[name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexandrina[/name] nn [name]Lexie[/name]
[name]Diana[/name] nn [name]Di[/name], [name]Anna[/name]/[name]Annie[/name], [name]Dee[/name]-[name]Dee[/name]

[name]Christina[/name] nn [name]Chrissie[/name], [name]Tina[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name] nn [name]Jemma[/name]/[name]Jem[/name], [name]Mimi/name
[name]Melissa[/name] nn [name]Mel[/name], [name]Lissa[/name]/Lissy
[name]Victoria[/name] nn [name]Tori[/name], [name]Tor[/name]
[name]Selena[/name]
[name]Sarina[/name] nn [name]Sari[/name]

[name]Agatha[/name] - I had a picture book when I was little that had a character named [name]Agatha[/name] who was a witch. I was terrified of her! I used to hide the book under my bed at night so she wouldn’t come alive. So, I don’t have the best connotations with this name! But objectively, I also think it looks and sounds a little harsh, it certainly doesn’t have the gentle flow of some of your other names.

[name]Cecilia[/name] - I feel pretty much the same way about this name as you do. Dislike the meaning, dislike the nicknames, sounds very… sugary.
[name]Clarissa[/name] - This is my absolute favourite of your names. It’s just beautiful, like you said. If you’re worried it’s too flowery, I think the nn [name]Clara[/name] is lovely, and for a particularly tomboyish girl, even [name]Clarry[/name] isn’t terrible! It has a literary tie-in (the [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Richardson[/name] novel, not that it’s a very happy story!) Also, if you’re after an inspiring namesake, [name]Clarissa[/name] Pinkola Est”s isn’t a bad choice! She’s a poet and psychologist, and I have countless quotes of hers written down!

[name]Claudia[/name] - This name always sounds a little clumsy to my ear.

[name]Estella[/name] - I would go for plain [name]Esme[/name] if that’s what you love. [name]Estella[/name] [name]Meg[/name] --> [name]Esme[/name] seems like a wee bit of a stretch.

[name]Irina[/name] - I think [name]Irena[/name] Sendler would be an inspiring namesake, (although she did spell her name with an ‘e’) This also happened to be the name of my great-aunt, universally known as [name]Rena[/name]. Which, actually, looks a bit like renal. I just talked myself out of it. If you don’t love it, discard it! You had alot of great names to choose from.
[name]Leonora[/name] - I’ve never heard of this being pronounced any other way than [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nore-uh.

[name]Lucia[/name] - Pronounced loo-chee-uh it’s different enough from [name]Louisa[/name]! But if you’re annoying yourself when you say it out loud, I’d say that’s a cue to consider alternatives!.

[name]Lydia[/name] - I’ve noticed this name is popular here, but all I can think of is bratty [name]Lydia[/name] from Pride and Prejudice, who has made my teeth grind together since I was 10 years old!

[name]Tabitha[/name] - Sounds like you’re sold on [name]Tabitha[/name]! I love [name]Tabitha[/name]'s spunk and charisma, girly but not frilly, cute on an infant but dignified on a grown woman, like the names of your other children.

I think [name]Tabitha[/name] is a nice choice but I just realised you probably can’t use the nn [name]Tibby[/name] since you already call [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Tilly[/name]. Personally I’d use [name]Tabby[/name] since [name]Beth[/name] is a bit of a stretch to me. People will assume it’s short for [name]Bethany[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name].

I think the only names on your list that really go with the siblings are [name]Agatha[/name] and [name]Tabitha[/name]. I’m not really a fan of either. [name]Agatha[/name] is definitely too harsh and dreary for a little girl. [name]Tabitha[/name] is too witchy, especially with sister [name]Matilda[/name]. And [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Tabby[/name]/[name]Tibby[/name] are to close.

What about [name]Anastasia[/name]?

I think it goes perfectly with your other children’s names. It’s got a similar feel to [name]Agatha[/name], without the harshness and it’s more distinct from the sibling names than [name]Tabitha[/name].

By the way, I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Phillipa[/name]!

Thanks everyone! It’s really helped clear some (most!) names off of our list. We’re left with [name]Clarissa[/name], which I love, nn [name]Clara[/name], which seems very girly, although less than the full name [name]Clarissa[/name], so we’ll see. And [name]Tabitha[/name], it does sound witchy and stuff, but I still like it, but the [name]Tabby[/name] & [name]Tilly[/name] thing might kill me, we don’t call [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Tilly[/name] all the time, she has many nicknames, but I think maybe it’s too close? So I’m left with ultra sweet, maybe too sweet, or a witchy one I love, with a nickname that might drive me insane…

I like [name]Clarissa[/name] best too. She could go by “[name]Clare[/name]” instead of [name]Clara[/name].

[name]AH[/name]! I’m embarrassed to admit that I never thought of that! I thought maybe [name]Claire[/name], but the I would annoy me because it’s not in [name]Clarissa[/name], and [name]Clare[/name] sounds less frilly! So great! Thank you, it’s at the top of our list now!

Of the two that are left, I’m personally not in love with either. [name]Tabitha[/name] shortened to [name]Tabby[/name] reminds me of tabby cats, and it does seem to close to [name]Tilly[/name] ([name]Matilda[/name]) - [name]Tilly[/name] is a much sweeter nickname, too. [name]Clarissa[/name] doesn’t seem to fit the classic, elegant, vintage name style you have at all to me - all it reminds me of is the 1990s Nickelodeon show, [name]Clarissa[/name] Explains It All, starring [name]Melissa[/name] [name]Joan[/name] [name]Hart[/name]. Thus, the name seems very 90s and dated (in a bad way) to me.

I’m going to take a risk and suggest a few more to you:

[name]Alberta[/name] - [name]Ali[/name], [name]Bertie[/name] (my parents call me [name]Birdie[/name])
[name]Annora[/name] - [name]Nora[/name], [name]Annie[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name] - [name]Gus[/name] (I know a girl named [name]Gus[/name]), [name]Gusty[/name], [name]Augie[/name]
[name]Georgina[/name] - [name]Georgie[/name], [name]Gina[/name]
[name]Rosanna[/name] - [name]Rose[/name], [name]Rosie[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Annie[/name], [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Rowena[/name] - Row, [name]Rena[/name]
[name]Vanessa[/name] - [name]Van[/name], [name]Nessa[/name], [name]Nessie[/name], V

I think my favorites with [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], and [name]Philippa[/name] are [name]Annora[/name], [name]Georgina[/name], and [name]Rosanna[/name]…

I’ve actually been trying to find a full name for nn [name]Rosie[/name] for awhile, but I haven’t really looked that hard, I’ll search sometime soon, I think [name]Rosie[/name] is such a classic nn, love it! Also, I’ve been worrying about the [name]Tabby[/name] cat thing, and tibby makes me think of the sisterhood of the traveling pants… meh. I’m liking [name]Tabitha[/name] less and less.

[name]Agatha[/name] ” I really like [name]Agatha[/name]! I think its such a gorgeous, underused name, but my husband hates it, so will never get to use it ): and [name]Aggie[/name] is such a sweet nickname!

[name]Cecilia[/name] ” Hubby and I are planning on calling our girl [name]Cecelia[/name], love the name, just a matter of seeing whether she looks like a [name]Juliet[/name] or a [name]Cecelia[/name] :stuck_out_tongue: planning on using [name]Celia[/name] as a nickname. Sounds like its not right for you though.

[name]Clarissa[/name] ” Not my style at all, sorry.

[name]Claudia[/name] ” Not my style.

[name]Estella[/name] ” I agree with previous posters, if you love the name [name]Esme[/name], why not go for it?

[name]Irina[/name] ” I don”t like it sorry.

[name]Leonora[/name] ” I”m not a fan.

[name]Lucia[/name] ” My darling daughter is called [name]Lucia[/name], we pronounce it [name]Lu[/name]-see-uh. Prefer it that way and it sounds better in a Kiwi accent anyway :stuck_out_tongue: Again, to me it sounds that you”re not really a fan and I think it”d be a waste to give your daughter a name you don”t really like.

[name]Lydia[/name] ” [name]Lydia[/name]”s quite cute, I don”t feel it fits in with your other names much though.

[name]Tabitha[/name] ” [name]Tabitha[/name] is a gorgeous name! Another one that I like that hubby hates. He is convinced it is a cat name. Lol men. xD

I can’t bring myself to take [name]Agatha[/name] off the list, but it seems harsh, but aggie is so cute, it goes perfectly with [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Philippa[/name], on and on.

I’m happy for you, and [name]Cecelia[/name] is a beautiful name for you, it sounds great with [name]Lucia[/name]! Best wishes!

no to clarissa, no to claudia, no to estella, can’t do [name]Esme[/name] by itself for silly but set in stone friends reasons :frowning:

I’m curious, how do you feel about [name]Jemima[/name] nn [name]Gemma[/name]?

[name]Jemima[/name]!! That’s so perfect!! I love [name]Jemima[/name] - it has the same feel to me as [name]Tabitha[/name], but without the nn problem. And I love the nn [name]Gemma[/name].

[name]Tabitha[/name] and [name]Clarissa[/name] are definitely my favorites on your list for all of the reasons that you mention. I also like [name]Lydia[/name] a lot, but I’m not a huge nickname person, so its lack of nicknames don’t bother me. And sadly I’ve been hearing a lot of babies named that recently. The earlier suggestion of [name]Augusta[/name] also fits well. [name]Dorothea[/name], which someone else suggested, would be way too close to [name]Theodore[/name].

My name is [name]Tabatha[/name] and I don’t think you should be worried about any connotations associated with it…they’re all good

Yes, there are [name]Tabby[/name] cats…eh so what its a cat, if there were [name]Tabby[/name] warthogs I’d be a little more worried lol

Yes, it is a “witchy” name…but she’s a good witch. Everybody looooves Bewitched and the only thing she will get asked every once in a while is if she can wiggle her nose… It’s also a generation thing and when she gets to be my age (22) people probably won’t remember it anymore.

It’s a biblical name…Acts 9:36 "In [name]Joppa[/name] there was a disciple named [name]Tabitha[/name], who was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. [name]Lydda[/name] was near [name]Joppa[/name]; so when the disciples heard that [name]Peter[/name] was in [name]Lydda[/name], they sent two men to him and urged him, ”Please come at once!”
[name]Peter[/name] went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that [name]Dorcas[/name] had made while she was still with them. [name]Peter[/name] sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, ”[name]Tabitha[/name], get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing [name]Peter[/name] she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.

I don’t mind sharing a name with a good-do-er who was loved so much she was brought back to life

[name]Hope[/name] that helps!

Such great choices!! But I can’t resist throwing a few more into the mix:

[name]Nerissa[/name] - (lovely [name]Shakespeare[/name] name. Nn [name]Risa[/name], Nerrie?)
[name]Francesca[/name] - (love the nn Francey!)
[name]Octavia[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Eugenia[/name]

I know you were looking for ‘a’ endings, but here are a few non-'a’s that still fit nicely with the sibs, I think.

[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Corisande[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Winifred[/name] (might be a stretch, but I adore “[name]Winnie[/name]”)
[name]Rosamund[/name]

Have you considered [name]Georgiana[/name] (jor-[name]JAY[/name]-na)?
