Thanks so much for replying. Hubby doesn’t like [name]Catherine[/name]. He says it’s too old sounding. >.<
Any body else have anything to say?

[name]How[/name] is [name]Persephone[/name] pronounced? Is it just Purse- eh- phone?
It’s per-seph-oh-nee. Greek goddess of spring growth and wife of Hades.
In Greek names, when there’s an e at the end, examples-- [name]Ariadne[/name], Arachne, [name]Eirene[/name], [name]Xanthe[/name], [name]Ianthe[/name], [name]Persephone[/name] – the E is pronounced with a long sound. ah-ree-odd-nee, uh-rack-nee, eye-ree-nee, zan-thee, ian-thee, per-seph-oh-ne
Does that help?
I voted “other” because I think a consonant-beginning mn would sound so much better next to the long E sound ending [name]Persephone[/name]. I don’t care for [name]Siobhan[/name] because A ) [name]Persephone[/name] is already unusual enough for people to figure out, and B ) that much uber-Greek and uber-Gaelic sort of breaks my brain.
[name]Persephone[/name] [name]Cora[/name] would be very pretty, if you would consider shortening your [name]Coraline[/name].
I plan on using it for a daughter.
[name]Persephone[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] got my vote!
[name]How[/name] about [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]? [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Alice[/name], [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Carys[/name], Pershephone [name]Iris[/name] would all be cute.
I think [name]Persephone[/name] is a pretty name, but if you look up the meaning it says “bringer of death” - not so pretty
I voted for [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Arianna[/name]…I have always loved this name and the myth behind it…I applaud the gutsiness to use it and admire that you have a husband that would consider it…
You have impeccible taste in names…good luck
@aesullivan – it says that and is completely inaccurate. She doesn’t bring death. Hades brings death. [name]Demeter[/name] brought death when [name]Persephone[/name] was kidnapped. [name]Persephone[/name] brought spring back to the world. She is the goddess of spring growth and the only reason [name]Demeter[/name] didn’t curse the world to eternal draught.
And thanks for all the votes. Hubby doesn’t like [name]Cora[/name], only [name]Coraline[/name] and he thinks it sounds weird with [name]Persephone[/name] >.< He’s picky. I do agree though, that a consonant beginning would be good, but we can’t seem to find one we like. Do you tihnk Persephone Coraline is weird?
Thanks for the compliment Mollykat, I like to think I have good names. My husband actually sort of suggested it.
I really like [name]Persephone[/name], but I would skip [name]Siobhan[/name] as a middle so she doesnt have two tough pronunciation names.
I voted [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Imogen[/name], but I like the above suggestion of [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Iris[/name]. Or looking at your signature, what about [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Echo[/name] (although that spells [name]PET[/name], not sure if that’s better or worse than PIT)?
I suggested [name]Echo[/name] to my husband and he said “Eh” and made this face where he scrunches his nose and raises an eyebrow. He doesn’t like it.
I do agree with all of you about [name]Siobhan[/name]. I love it, but would make things twice as hard on her to learn to spell and say her own name.
I’ve also been thinking about [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Selene[/name]. Thoughts?
I love [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]. [name]Arianna[/name] is nice too. Not keen on [name]Siobhan[/name]! Good luck choosing
My thoughts on [name]Selene[/name] and [name]Coraline[/name] fall into the same category: with [name]Persephone[/name] you have that long Greek E at the end, which is an exception to the usual grammatical rules of English. Thus, I would avoid combining a Silent E name with the Greek E name, so the kid doesn’t have to learn two rules at once. If it were my name I would be asking why the mn wasn’t pronounced sah-leen-nee or cora-lee-nee. That’s the main reason I suggested shortening to [name]Cora[/name] in the first place. Yeah, pretty geeky. Sorry about that. You asked. LOL
[name]Do[/name] you have a list of middle names? I’ve been finding that my original list with the names that didn’t quite make the final cut for first names are a great source for middles (often they have a different sound than the top favorites).
No, it’s not geeky at all, I did ask and you make some very valid points.
Names that didn’t make it as a first name:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Amara[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name]
[name]Aria[/name]
[name]Arianna[/name]
[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Seren[/name]
Lysandra
[name]Kynthia[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] (but pronounced the Greek way - [name]Thay[/name]-lee-uh)
Myrina (me-reen-uh)
[name]Elysia[/name] (said the Greek way - el-ee-shee-uh) – we actually [name]LOVE[/name] this one but every single person on here who responded to my first post about [name]Persephone[/name] wanted to argue with me that is was really said Eh-lis-ee-uh but that’s in English. In Greek, the Y and the I make the same sound like in Elysium/Elysian Fields. Type [name]Elysia[/name] into Google translate if you don’t believe me.
Sorry about ranting, but I have problems with people and that name. I love it but feel like I can’t use it because of all the mispronunciation.
All the choices in your poll are nice. My favorite would be [name]Imogen[/name], but to me the initials PIT are a deal-breaker. [name]Siobhan[/name] is awfully Irish to go with such a Greek first name, and [name]Arianna[/name] is just a lot of syllables when combined with [name]Persephone[/name].
Why not go with [name]Elysia[/name] in spite of the pronunciation issues? People will rarely be called upon to pronounce your daughter’s middle name.
I know they won’t. Rationally, I know it matters the most that my husband and I both know how to say it and that she knows how to say it and that not many people will see it written and they will hear her say it instead. I rationally know this. I think I’m just thinking to hard about it actually.
I’ll run it by my husband. His favorite from this list is [name]Arianna[/name] but his all time favorite was [name]Elysia[/name]. I’ll see if he’d be willing to consider it again
LOL! I believe you about [name]Elysia[/name], no worries. I would have been inclined to say it the Greek way in the first place anyway so hey someone around here has it the way you wanted it. Sorry I missed your original post on the subject. Actually, in the “real wold” I would expect to hear el-LYE-see-uh. I guess the long and short of it is that [name]Elysia[/name] is going to be a confusing name no matter what.
Not that [name]Persephone[/name] isn’t going to be confusing too; you’ll probably get a lot of pursa-phone. But honestly I would expect in the “real world” you’ll have to spell out both names and give a lot of crash courses in Greek.
[name]Persephone[/name] [name]Elysia[/name] IS very pretty. Actually, I think I like it best out of any of the mn possibilities you have listed. I like that the EE sound repeats in both names, and you would have Greek rules for both names as well which seems more consistent.
I really appreciate it! I think my husband and I have been significantly reassured and are going to go back to our original combo Hopefully I’ll get pregnant some time soon and we can use it.
On an unrelated note, have picked a name yet saracita?
