I don’t understand why people hate it that much. I’ve mentioned it before to my ex and then to some of my friends and family and everyone was like ew. Why? I find it being extremely cute and charming and it sounds fascinating, which is a rare thing when it comes to names. What do you think berries?
I’m guessing it’s the extreme similarity to [name]Perseus[/name] and other [name]Percy[/name] names, which they associate with men’s names. It doesn’t have that same unisex/surnamey feel that people tend to favor in boys-names-on-girls. And then, some people just don’t like gender-ambiguous names I’d also venture to guess that [name]Percy[/name] names, even on a boy, are a somewhat rare taste, even for a name lover.
Honestly, it reminds me of penis. At first glance, that is what it looked like. Sorry!
Hahhahahaha, you comment is priceless.
I think it sounds and looks pretty myself.
It’s a strong, elegant, classic name. Use it!
For me, I think it seems to be missing something because I’m more familiar with [name]Perseus[/name], so [name]Persis[/name] seems incomplete and wrong somehow.
I really love [name]Persis[/name]. I just recently added it to my list but the SO hates it. I convinced him to like [name]Zoe[/name] though, so I’m holding out hope! [name]Persis[/name] is a character in the [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables series, and I remember liking it when I read it. I say go for it!
It probably has something to do with the fact that I was just reading my husbands post op vasectomy papers, so male anatomy is on my mind right now, lol!
The sound of [name]Persis[/name] is quite pretty, actually.
I agree with finding it fascinating! And I do like it, but in a complicated way. Maybe the “sis” is close to “sissy”, maybe the word being close to “purses” or “purse” (i.e. to purse the lips) is weird, maybe it being faintly close to a slang term for a cat that’s also a slang term for female anatomy (moreso in some accents than others) is part of the problem. Maybe it rhymes with curses.
But all of that is overlookable, but I think all that plus it being uncommon is hard for people.
I’m not sure it’s super-advisable as a first but I’d loved to see it used as a middle.
I quite like [name]Perseus[/name] and it does sound strong and charming. [name]Persis[/name] gives off a similar vibe and does feel a bit masculine, but I can see it on a girl and it’s similar to [name]Wallis[/name] which is unisex/feminine. My problem with both [name]Perseus[/name] and [name]Persis[/name] has always been that it reminds me of the word “persecute”… strange I know.
I saw “penis” at first glance, too. Sorry!
I quite like [name_f]Persis[/name_f], though couldn’t use it myself as it doesn’t go with the surname at all!
I first became aware of the name in the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables series. I thought it sounded mystical, watery (I don’t know why, but it sounds like a mermaid’s name to me), and glamourous. [name_f]Persis[/name_f] is beautiful.
I am fond of [name_f]Persis[/name_f] ^^
I like the sparse feel and the silent strength. Delicate with backbone.
Very reminiscent of [name_f]Petra[/name_f], only less choppy.
For her sisters I would use [name_f]Iona[/name_f], Nimue and [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]. I’m a little uncertain what I might use for her brothers, possibly [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] and [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m].
Hm, I don’t really like the sound either, it reminds me of pertussis, the scientific name for whooping cough. So I end up thinking of those depressing commercials about sick babies that promote the pertussis vaccine.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! I thought I was alone. I suppose I’m just attracted to that sound (although some find it hissy), considering that I also like Persicina, [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], Persici, [name_f]Circe[/name_f], and [name_u]Persia[/name_u]. I also think it looks really cool on paper. I love it’s ancient charm, and it reminds me of [name_u]Egypt[/name_u] for some reason.
