Opinions on spelling

Hubs and I have been TTC for over 5 years now. We are starting fertility treatments at the end of this month. 5 years is a long time to think about names and our girl name was set pretty early on. [name_u]Parker[/name_u] (my maiden name) [name_f]Gail[/name_f] ([name_f]MIL[/name_f]'s mn). We just recently decided between 2 boys names and the one we landed on seems to be unanimously hated by berries but it has a good bit of meaning to us. My husband is a trekker who works at a prison so our chosen boy name is [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]/Riker.

My question is, even if you hate the name, which spelling do you prefer. Hubs likes Riker because it is how Number 1 on [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek The Next Generation spells his surname and how the prison is [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m], Riker’s Island is spelled.

I prefer [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]. It looks trendiest, which I don’t like, but I like the way it looks written out.

So, WDYT? Riker or [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]?

[name_m]Ryker[/name_m] for sure. Kind of like [name_m]Ryder[/name_m].

My [name_m]SIL[/name_m] said the same thing.

My brain can’t wrap itself around this one-- I agree with your husband’s logic but I also agree that [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] looks more like a name. So overall, I am of no help whatsoever. (count my vote whichever way you like)

Riker just looks like biker and not like a name to me. Then again he wanted to name a boy after him, which would make baby the third and call him 3.

I like the look of [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] better

[name_m]Ryker[/name_m] definitely looks better spelled out on its own. That being said, the [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek connection is cool, and you know what, Riker’s Island looks a lot better than [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]'s Island. So you might want to see how the name sits with your last name. If your last name has an I in it, Riker might actually work better. Try it typed, handwritten, printed, etc.

Riker. With an I.

I’m a hardcore Trekker, so of course I prefer Riker.

I’d spell it Riker (totally TNG Trekkie here), but why don’t you use Parker either way?

I like [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] more.

TNG is the only series I can tolerate, aside from all of the movies no matter the cast. Our last name is [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] and the mn will be [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. I wrote them both out and have to admit that written down I preferred Riker [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] to [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m]. Alone I still love the look of [name_m]Ryker[/name_m].

We’re not using [name_u]Parker[/name_u] for a boy because I have a cousin with a little boy named [name_u]Parker[/name_u] and the only way I could justify using it after she did was using it for a girl.

Thanks so much for your input berries. I really appreciate it. And I’m glad to find other trekkers.

[name_m]Ryker[/name_m], purely because Riker to me looks like [name_m]Rick[/name_m]-er, as I know a couple of guys called [name_m]Rik[/name_m] pronounced like [name_m]Rick[/name_m], so the letter combination makes a different sound for me. I’m assuming you want the pronunciation to rhyme with Biker.

On another note, [name_u]Parker[/name_u] and Riker/[name_m]Ryker[/name_m] strike me as a bit close for potential siblings should you use the other name for a subsequent child.

I love your girls pick! my daughter’s name is [name_u]Parker[/name_u] and i love everything about it
And i really like [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] as well! With this spelling. Riker looks a bit weird and not like a name. And i think most people would assume it was spelled ryker, so that’s probably the easiest one to live with.

I told my husband about the potential [name_m]Rick[/name_m]-er confusion. He’s very adamant that he wants it spelled with an I. I’m trying to convince him that since the name is in honor of his passion ([name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek) and his career (corrections officer) that I should be given leeway on the spelling. I’m hoping I have enough time to persuade him.

As for a [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]/[name_u]Parker[/name_u] sibset. I wouldn’t use the names together. [name_m]Way[/name_m] too matchy for my taste. We have a few other girl names that we’re considering. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] just to name a few.

Riker makes me think of biker but I do think it looks a little less trendy.

Regardless of spelling, the name will have an element of trendiness to it. I’m not sure any child would want to be named directly after a prison so I’d choose [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] because it’s at least spelled different. [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] is also the most familiar to people and Riker will get misspelled constantly.

FWIW, [name_m]Ryker[/name_m] was used 1,642 times in 2012 and Riker only 37.
