Recently stumbled upon the name Bastille. I find it very special, uncommon and interesting because of the connection to the French Revolution🇨🇵
What are your opinions on the name?
Ps. Where i live it would be pronounced like Vastili😊

Certainly not. It was a prison, and thus no more suitable as a given name than Alcatraz or [name_f]Attica[/name_f].
I honestly love the sound of it. The prison association would maybe hold me back but because it was already an established name before the prison and continued to be used afterwords I’d be ok with it, and on top of that the majority of prisoners in the prison were people who had opposed the king and called for revolution (among others like Protestants, homosexuals, etc), not violent murd3rs and r@pist. Though I’d probably put it in the middle for it to be a bit safer. A name I also think is gorgeous is Bastilla, not as connected but sounds so cool and elegant
Ohh, thank you both for your feedback!
I was not going to use it as a first name anyways because it is unusual where i live for people to have a “non christian” first name…
@leafygreens you are right about the people in it though…
It’s a prison, and mainly makes me think of beheading the king and other niceties. It exists as a surname but as far as I know, not as a first.
If you like the French Revolution you could check the revolutionary calendar, they broke with old Christian names to use nature names instead.
You have all the names by months at the end of the wiki page, a lot of wild ones but some are still very much usable.
Another idea would be to use names of people associated with the event like Marianne (female symbol of the new republic), Camille (Desmoulins), Olympe (de Gouges), Marie Anne Charlotte (de Corday)…
I agree with this. It’s a big no.
You might instead like Castile/ Castille if it’s the sound you like, not just the imagery, or another “ille” name. If the imagery, maybe a key figure of that time or the name [name_u]Liberty[/name_u].
Thank you for the recommendations @EloiseT
Certainly not. It was the name of a prison, and the prison of Bastille is the first thing I think of when I think of this name - and the mishappen heads.
What about Castille? It is a French name, and it is geographic. It is unknown in most countries but in France it ranks within the top 300 and is considered an elegant, somehow bohemien yet bon chic bon genre name.
There is also Camille.

I’m not sure if I’d use Bastille as a first name, but my first association is the Storming of the Bastille so, it’s not necessarily a bad association. I think it really depends on where you live if it’s perceived as positive or negative. I think it could be an interesting name for a book character.
