Opinions on the name Rumi

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, can you give your honest opinions about the name [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] for a boy?
It’s an unusual name but we like it and think it works well. It comes from the old Persian poet [name_f]Rumi[/name_f]. In Persian it literally means ‘roman’.

We’ve had a lot of mixed opinions from friends and family, the main concern seems to be that it sounds too much like ‘roomy’.

Thank you

I associate it with [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] the poet and so immediately thought of it as a powerful name associated with wisdom, love & insight. You may get a lot of people asking if he is named after [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] the poet, but it sounds like that is in part your intention. If so, I say go for it.

I think it’s cute and unique! Although, I pronounced it RUM-ee (vs [name_u]RUE[/name_u]-mee) until I saw your comment about roomy. With the incorrect pronunciation it reminds me of the board game Rummy, and I’ve never even played it; so that might be something to consider. Overall, after learning the correct pronunciation, I think it’s nice

I think the association with the poet is very strong — perhaps to a fault, a bit like Voltaire or [name_m]Elvis[/name_m], where the name will always belong to that person more than anyone else who may have it. But perhaps this is good if it helps with the pronunciation, and it’s also possible [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] isn’t as well-known as I would assume.

It works as a middle

I personally don’t care for it. Sorry:/ Of course, it’s certainly still usable, whether I like it or not:D But would you consider [name_u]Remi[/name_u]?

Sorry I immediately thought ‘like roomy?’ but it’s not like that’s a ‘bad word’ yknow?
[name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of names out there sound like other words ([name_f]Astrid[/name_f] for girls comes to mind, nice name but not the best ‘word association’ on that one tbh) but that doesn’t stop people so if you like the name I’d say go for it!

As a huge fan of the poet, I happen to love this name and think it holds great meaning/virtue. So charming!

We did consider [name_u]Remi[/name_u] but we’re trying to go for a more traditional name with a Persian background but at the same time something that’s easy to pronounce.

Thank you all for the feedback. As cmariac mentioned does ‘roomy’ sound wrong to anyone else in English? A friend said they’d be worried that he would get bullied at school because of it. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you!

I love it!! I thought of the poet first too. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it for a boy!!

I absolutely love this name - it’s recognisable but not popular, and the poet is a lovely namesake.

Loooove it

I really like it, but only as a girls name.

I also love this name! It’s unusual, but the poet comes to mind immediately. I don’t think “roomy” is a bad word association, and I think the name is special enough to use despite this.
