Opinions on the name [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] for a boy? It kind of reminds me of the name [name_u]Zeke[/name_u]. I first heard the name from [name_u]Danny[/name_u] [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] in the movie Grease and again from [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Would it be ok to use for a boy (in the future) or is it too tied to pop culture? What do you think?

I wouldn’t get those references. I do feel it has a clown name vibe?? [name_u]Or[/name_u] like a candy name?

The Grease association would be a negative for me (I haven’t watched that movie in a hot minute so I didn’t remember that as his last name). I just overall find the movie to be quite misogynistic, and I’m not a fan of it, so that’s why I would say it’s negative. I know a lot of people really like it though.
[name_m]Zuko[/name_m] from ATLA would be my immediate association, and I think I’d consider it to be generally positive. The character has a really nice arc (not sure if you’re familiar with ATLA or just know it to be an association), but also spends most of the series as a villain. There are some kids who would like that or wouldn’t mind it, but there are others who might be uncomfortable with that. I feel similarly about the name Azula—I adore the name [name_f]Azula[/name_f], and I actually quite like the character, but probably wouldn’t use it because I can’t predict whether my future daughter would be alright sharing her name with a villain.
I wouldn’t consider [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] for myself. If I met a kid named [name_m]Zuko[/name_m], I would immediately want to know if the parents are ATLA fans. Is it too tied to pop culture? Yeah, for me, I would say it is. I don’t think that means it’s unusable, it just sounds like a good chunk of the population would have an association about it, and probably ask if you named him [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] with that association in mind.

I wouldn’t have thought of Grease at all.
I would immediately think of ATLA and whilst I love the character of [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] I feel like it’s such a strong link to a (relatively singular) pop culture character, that I suspect will endure, that I think it is a bit much.
I think it is useable - heck, 22 parents in the US in 2021 used it! - and there are many other pop culture names that are way more popular - think [name_m]Kylo[/name_m], [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] (although fewer now, I suspect the House of the Dragon will cause some names, they’re quite pretty, it’s a shame they’re all not exactly good role models) - and they’re all just as tied to specific pop culture things.

All I think is Grease and ATLA, the first not being a very positive association imo. I do think it’s usable for a middle name, but not as a first. I think it would be super tied to the film and series for it to be distinct as its own name.

Immediately thought of ATLA. [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name though. It’s incredibly handsome and a slight bit mysterious.
I would personally use this as a MN though, because of associations, but if you love it, go for it!

I didn’t think of any associations, but that’s because I haven’t watched any of those shows. I think [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] is cool.

Okay, done teasing. I think it’s adorable, but I’d personally prefer it for a nickname! For me, the associations with AtlA are just too strong, and it doesn’t quite stand alone as a name.
[name_f][/name_f]I can see it as a very cool, spirited nickname for a Japanese name like [name_u]Shizuku[/name_u], [name_m]Kazuki[/name_m], or [name_m]Keisuke[/name_m], or for any Zu- name, like [name_m]Zuzen[/name_m] or [name_u]Zouey[/name_u].

I think of ATLA. I have a hard time imagining it on a real person.
I am not really familiar with either Grease or the Airbender show so I don’t get the reference.
[name_f][/name_f]I don’t like [name_m]Zuko[/name_m] as a standalone name, but I could maybe see it as a nickname. Not sure what for, though.
[name_f]My[/name_f] immediate thought was ATLA even though I’ve never seen the show so that’s definitely a really strong association. I don’t know enough about the character to say if that’s a good or bad thing but such a strong association definitely gives me pause.
