Opinions on these combos?

Those that have been following my ongoing saga - a small update is that after all the work narrowing down our favorite names, my husband has declared that he still doesn’t “love” any of them, that he wants to be “wowed” and that he thinks the perfect name is still out there waiting for us. I’m sorry…but for the amount of time and energy I have put into this, I just don’t think he’s right. I think our “perfect” name is right in front of us and we just need to learn to have passion for it, know what I mean? So I think I’ve decided that I’m happy with our core list and if he’s not happy, he can just do more looking on his own time because I just give up!

Here’s what I’ve got to work with, what are your thoughts?

or…ok, now I’m going to sound like a dope, because I actually did discover a new name last night, but after researching the heck out of it and getting excited about it DH declared he thinks it’s too “out there”…but I think it’s cool so it’s staying on my list for now.

[name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] ([name_u]Calder[/name_u] means stream and DH is a majorly obsessed fly fisherman so I thought this was perfect!)

So, lay it on me!

I honestly really like all of these combos, except for [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m], which is just a bit bland compared with the rest.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] Fogg, [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m], [name_m]Weston[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]… this is silly, like I said, I like all of them.

I’m surprised he thinks [name_u]Calder[/name_u] is too out there. I feel like it is different/interesting yet still familiar sounding/looking. I think [name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is a great addition to the list.

P.S. I think your maiden name would sound good with some of the other names too, ie [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] Fogg, [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] Fogg, [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] Fogg.

Hands down [name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]. I love the tribute to your late sister and the great connection to your husband’s passion. To me, this is the one! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps :slight_smile:

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] or [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] Fogg - I like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] but I think it’s better as a mn because [name_m]Grant[/name_m] ends with a “t” as well.

[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] nn [name_m]Wes[/name_m] - I’m still loving [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] with [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f].
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] - either one of these combos are fine but I think the one-syllable [name_u]James[/name_u] flows the best with [name_m]Calvin[/name_m].
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] - I love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] but I’m not sure it’s the best choice with your children’s names.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] - [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] seems quite different in style than [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. Perhaps too formal and Biblical?
[name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_u]Calder[/name_u] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] - You must have been inspired! :slight_smile: [name_u]Calder[/name_u] isn’t “out-there” just not as familiar as the rest of your choices. It would certainly be the boldest and most interesting choice. Time to put the pressure on and get your husband to come around! :slight_smile:

Haha maybe I was! I was just flipping through the generic 1001 baby names book I’ve had laying around for years. Research I’ve done shows it’s never been in top 1,000 and it doesn’t even gave an entry on behindthename!

Oh- the web says [name_u]Cal[/name_u] is a mn, but [name_u]Cal[/name_u] isn’t pronounced like Caulder…is it ok to still use [name_u]Cal[/name_u] as in [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] as a nn?

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_m]Weston[/name_m] are my two most favorite and it is a tie. I couldn’t give you one favorite. [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] nn E J is so adorable, handsome, and has great sentimental value.

I don’t see why you can’t use the nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u] for a [name_u]Calder[/name_u]. Yeah, they’re not pronounced the same but [name_u]Calder[/name_u] contains the three letters “[name_u]Cal[/name_u]”.

Question - would you pick a name based on how good the entire name sounds, first, middle & last over chosing the first name that you prefer even if it means the entire name isn’t quite as great?
For instance, I really think I prefer [name_m]Weston[/name_m] over [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] but [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] is quite handsome while [name_m]Weston[/name_m] doesn’t flow great with any of the middles - except [name_u]James[/name_u] (see above explanation). So should I rank [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m] higher on my list than [name_m]Weston[/name_m] [name_m]Brian[/name_m]? They both have the nn [name_m]Wes[/name_m], so does it matter much?

I’d prefer it as a mn, but if it fits your family and you can convince your DH I think it can be a good option

I think you should always go with a first name that you love and something that has meaning over just aesthetics.

It doesn’t have perfect flow but if the meaning is right and you love it then it IS the perfect name!

Funny you say [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] doesn’t have the best flow - I came up with that combo the other night and it actually made me like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] more when I put it with [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], thought it had a nice ring to Honestly, [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] isn’t my top #3 anyway.

I hadn’t thought of any other Emm name. Emmerick is interesting. [name_u]Emery[/name_u] is another one, right?

Absolutely! I actually know a very cool, hipster drummer named [name_u]Emery[/name_u], so it has a cool feel to me. [name_m]Weston[/name_m] [name_u]Emery[/name_u] sounds very swag.
