Opinions on these names that appease the hubby!

We are pregnant with our second baby. I am 14 weeks, so no gender yet. I picked our first daughter’s name, [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], after a character on Arrested Development. To compromise, he is really interested in choosing a name for the second from [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek. I think this is fine, so I have gone through the characters and created my own list of the ones that are appealing to me.

Girls:
[name_f]Eris[/name_f]
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u]
[name_f]Miri[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Sela[/name_f] (pronounced say-luh)
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] (pronounced lee-luh)
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] (pronounced eye-lee-uh)

Boys:
Zefram - love the name [name_m]Ephram[/name_m] so I like this one
[name_m]Ronin[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
Tieran - Probably a second favorite
[name_m]Travers[/name_m]
Keevan
Riker
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - love this one, way more popular than [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]

Please take note that I know my daughter’s name is completely made up, and most of the names listed here are too. We are 100% OK with that. I am just looking for opinions on your favorite ones from this list (if you have one). I will understand if you don’t like them, they are a unique style. Thanks!

I like [name_u]Ilia[/name_u] but be aware [name_m]Ilya[/name_m] is a boy’s name in Europe. [name_m]Ronin[/name_m] is cool and I like [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. By the way, I suppose I have heard of another girl named [name_f]Maeby[/name_f] so it’s not that unique.

There are only 8 Maebys born in 2010, so way less common than a lot of other names we like! Thanks!

[name_f]Eris[/name_f] - I like this name and I think it works with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u] – Too much like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. The name is also to sing-songy with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]
[name_f]Miri[/name_f] – Too similar to [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f] – It’s okay. I don’t like the sound of it, but I visually it looks good with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_f]Sela[/name_f] – Most likely to be mispronounced.
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] Works with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f] and straddles the line between familiar and obscure.
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] – Looks too much like [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and doesn’t have the sweetness of [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].

Boys:
Zefram – I don’t like names that begin with Z.
[name_m]Ronin[/name_m] – I like this name, but I don’t love it with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] – Sounds good with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], but is maybe a bit too straight-laced.
Tieran – Cute, but it reminds me too much of Tyranny or [name_u]Kieran[/name_u].
[name_m]Travers[/name_m] – <3 <3 <3 with Maeby.
Keevan – A smush of Steven and Kevin.
Riker – Fits with Maeby, but not my favorite name. It’s too harsh sounding.
Miles – Too mainstream to be Maeby’s brother.

Hello and congrats!
With [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], I like;
[name_f]Lela[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]

I like your concept and the way you are compromising! My favorites are

Girls:
[name_f]Eris[/name_f]
[name_f]Miri[/name_f]
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] (pronounced lee-luh)

Boys:
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
Tieran
Riker

I like [name_u]Ezri[/name_u] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m]

[name_f]Kira[/name_f] and Jadzia are my other favourite girl [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek names.

[name_f]Eris[/name_f]–nice…I favor [name_f]Aris[/name_f] or Ariston for a boy (it’s an ancient Greek name)
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u]–cute, but I’d assume a boy, like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_f]Miri[/name_f]–sweet
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]-ok
[name_f]Sela[/name_f] (pronounced say-luh)–lovely
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] (pronounced lee-luh)–prefer [name_f]Layla[/name_f], like the Clapton song
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] (pronounced eye-lee-uh)–isn’t that a coffee drink?

Boys:
Zefram - not bad
[name_m]Ronin[/name_m]–prefer [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] spelling, but love the name!
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]–not a fan…always seems wimpy/sickly
Tieran - Prefer [name_u]Tiernan[/name_u], but not bad
[name_m]Travers[/name_m]–too close to the verb traverse
Keevan–nah
Riker–prison?
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - sweet, but I adore [name_m]Milo[/name_m]

I adore [name_f]Miri[/name_f], but I’m not a huge fan of your other girls’ names. I would have pronounced [name_u]Ilia[/name_u] as ee-lee-uh (like the male name [name_m]Ilya[/name_m]), and [name_f]Eris[/name_f] was a Greek goddess of chaos (not the worst mythological figure ever, but equivalent to the Norse [name_u]Loki[/name_u]). [name_u]Ezri[/name_u] will get mistaken for the male name [name_m]Ezra[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m] off of your boys’ list. [name_m]Travers[/name_m] goes very nicely with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]. Tieran sounds like the primarily female name [name_u]Tiernan[/name_u].

Congrats! First, I want to say that I love your upfront stance on ‘made-up’ names. And [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], although I was a bit weary at first, is really growing on me - I picture her as adorable as can be!

Anyways…

My favorite for your girl list is…

[name_f]Eris[/name_f] - I don’t mind the sound of this, and like how the spelling is up front and intuitive to the pronunciation (At least I think: [name_f]Air[/name_f]-iss?)

[name_u]Ezri[/name_u] - I actually really adore this, being a fan of [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. It’s my favorite!

[name_f]Miri[/name_f] - I like the sound of this, although I can only think of that movie ‘[name_m]Zack[/name_m] and [name_f]Miri[/name_f] Make a Porno’, sorry. Also…it is a little matchy with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f] - especially when that’s already kind of a ‘cute’ name.

[name_f]Sela[/name_f] (pronounced say-luh) - Ooh… I like the sound of this very much! I see it growing nicely, too!

Boys:

Zefram - Also being a huge fan of [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m], I’m not sure how I feel on this one, but I certainly don’t hate it.

[name_m]Ronin[/name_m] - I like this quite a bit, liking [name_m]Roman[/name_m] more.

[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] - I’ve always liked this name, thinking [name_m]Wes[/name_m] is one of those ‘instant attractive’ names, like [name_u]Ryan[/name_u].

Tieran - I’m OK with it

Keevan - Surprisingly not minding this, either. I really, really love [name_m]Killian[/name_m]/[name_m]Cillian[/name_m], though.

Riker - My stepson’s name is [name_m]Ryker[/name_m]…and I’m actually not a fan at all. I prefer this spelling, though!

[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f], but I do prefer [name_m]Milo[/name_m]

Congrats, Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m] & [name_f]Happy[/name_f] Naming!!

  • [name_f]Aggie[/name_f]-

I know an [name_u]Ilia[/name_u] (about 18/19 years old) and I think it sounds great with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]; second fave is [name_f]Sela[/name_f]. [name_f]Lela[/name_f] makes me think of Futurama before [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek.

I’m liking Tieran or [name_m]Ronin[/name_m] for a boy.

Thanks for your opinions, keep them coming! @rkrd - I generally would prefer alternatives, but trying to stick to the spellings and pronunciations from the show.

I like:
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Sela[/name_f]
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] it. My favorite with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]. I’d consider spelling it [name_f]Leela[/name_f], though.
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] - I don’t think it’s an intuitive pronunciation at all (maybe spell it Islia?) but it’s a lovely name. [name_u]Ilia[/name_u] is also the name of a Trojan princess in Idomeneo, one of [name_m]Mozart[/name_m]'s operas.
Zefram - I really like this one with [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] - Like pp said, it’s a bit plain next to [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], but it could work. However, I’m pretty sure the character is widely hated.
Tieran
Keevan

I’d eliminate:
[name_f]Eris[/name_f] - There’s the goddess of discord thing, and I also think it’s too severe next to [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u] - [name_m]Just[/name_m] generally unpleasant and NMS.
[name_f]Miri[/name_f] - Too similar to [name_f]Maeby[/name_f].
[name_m]Travers[/name_m] - Is the name of a Death Eater in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], so that’s all I can think of when I see it.
Riker - I agree with pp, the sound is too harsh.
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - Yep, too popular compared to [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], and it locks you into using M’s.

[name_f]Eris[/name_f]- Pretty but could get confused with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u]- Ok reminds me too much of [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] though
[name_f]Miri[/name_f]- I like it but it doesn’t look like a full name more like a nn for [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]- [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t like it
[name_f]Sela[/name_f] (pronounced say-luh) [name_f]Love[/name_f] this one! My neighbor is named this and it sounds pretty and sophesticated
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] (pronounced lee-luh)- Like it but its so similar to the popular [name_f]Lila[/name_f] or [name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] (pronounced eye-lee-uh) Looks like it would be mispronounced a lot

Boys:
Zefram - I like it! Its spunky and Zef would be a good nickname
[name_m]Ronin[/name_m]- [name_m]How[/name_m] is this pronounced? Like [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]? I don’t really like the spelling
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]- Its ok but so popular in my area
Tieran - Like this one a lot!
[name_m]Travers[/name_m]- Looks kinda like Travelers but other than that its nice
Keevan- Looks like a kreaytive spelling of [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] sorry I don’t like it
Riker- Sounds manly and would fit in but is still uncommon! [name_f]Love[/name_f] it!
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - Never liked this name sorry and it’s so popular I prefer [name_m]Milo[/name_m]

From those I like:
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u]
[name_m]Ronin[/name_m]
Tieran
[name_m]Travers[/name_m] (reallyyyy like this one)
Keevan

With [name_f]Maeby[/name_f], I like [name_f]Lela[/name_f], [name_f]Nerys[/name_f], [name_f]Sela[/name_f], [name_m]Ronin[/name_m], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] & Tieran.

Favorites:

[name_f]Eris[/name_f]
[name_f]Sela[/name_f]
Zefram
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
Tieran

Congrats on your pregancy! I like these names for [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]'s sibling. [name_f]Sela[/name_f] and [name_f]Lela[/name_f] are my faves for girls and Tieran for a boy.

Girls:

[name_f]Nerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Sela[/name_f] (pronounced say-luh)
[name_f]Lela[/name_f] (pronounced lee-luh)
[name_u]Ilia[/name_u] (pronounced eye-lee-uh) - this may have pronunciation issues. Some non-Trekkies may be more inclined to pronounce it “ee-lee-uh”.

Boys:

[name_m]Ronin[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Travers[/name_m]
Tieran
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]

Thank you everyone for the feedback! Some things I didn’t know (I have never come across [name_m]Ilya[/name_m] as a boys name) and some things I did ([name_u]Ilia[/name_u] would cause pronunciation issues, [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] was a hated character on the show!).

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see some love for mine and my husbands’ front runners, and for the less expected [name_m]Travers[/name_m] and even Zefram.

I have also appreciated the positive and constructive feedback! Please, anyone who hasn’t already, feel free to keep commenting. It is helpful to see peoples’ opinions, from different places, styles, and walks of life!

[name_f]Nerys[/name_f] and [name_f]Sela[/name_f] get my vote for the girls, Tieran and Riker are my favs for the boys.
