My fiancé is Spanish and I’m Italian and we’ve been having a hard time compromising on boy names! We both want something distinctly Latin sounding that works in English and Spanish, but he doesn’t want common names ([name_m]Marco[/name_m], [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], [name_m]Santiago[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Emilio[/name_m], [name_m]Enrique[/name_m], [name_m]Javier[/name_m], etc.) and has vetoed many options. [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] is the ONLY thing we’ve agreed on, and - despite his dislike for nicknames - he loves [name_m]Cas[/name_m], which I adore.
As many have asked, yes, it is a Supernatural name. The connotation is not a deterrent as we are both fans of the show, but the name is also listed as a variant of [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] and an angel in Judo-Christianity, so it is not completely made up.
So what do you think? Our girl option is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] for reference. [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!
I like it. I’ve only heard [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] used in context of Supernatural, but I never assumed it was a name made up for the show. It’s a nice name, and [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is a sweet nickname.
I’m glad it doesn’t sound made up! I saw some other threads where that was a common complaint. Thank you the feedback! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it!
Absolutely gorgeous, I love it! I’ve never watched Supernatural so my first association is Castile, an ancient kingdom on the Iberian peninsula (so perfect for the feel you’re going for). I love [name_m]Cas[/name_m] for short too.
I love [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] (both the name and the character!) and nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is super cute. I agree that I never thought the name was made up for the show. It sounds perfectly legit! I would love to meet someone with the name.
I like [name_m]Castiel[/name_m], it sounds fresh but familiar at the same time. It reminds me of the word castle (and the Icelandic and [name_m]German[/name_m] word for it), but that’s not a bad association.
Before I know if I like it or not, I need to double-check the pronunciation. And depending on what you mean by “works in English,” that could be a potential problem. My instinct would be to pronounce it as if it were Spanish, “cahs-tee-[name_f]EL[/name_f].” But some people might see it and pronounce it “cas-[name_m]TEEL[/name_m].”
I think both pronunciations are okay (I prefer the first one), but I think it’s possible you will do a lot of correcting of people who guess the wrong way.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] and [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is one of my favorite nicknames! I’ve never seen Supernatural, so I didn’t know the name is from there, but it still does not seem made up to me.
I think I prefer [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] to [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m], I like the hard “t” sound in [name_m]Castiel[/name_m]. However, both are lovely and I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
