[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]: Very pretty! Some people get held up about the biblical reference, but others seem to be moving past that.
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]: I really like it! You might get some negative opinions on here about it though
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f]: this is my sister’s name, so I’m a bit biased lol. I truly do like the name and think it is pretty and girly without being to frilly.
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]: Underused, but sweet!
[name_f]Moriah[/name_f]: I’m not too fond of this one. Not sure why…maybe the sound?
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]: I love it! It’s simple, but sweet and very flexible!
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]: Not my favorite, but it isn’t bad. I know a few [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]'s and they always got called [name_f]Tabby[/name_f], which reminds me of the cat and I can’t really shake that association now
I don’t find them too frumpy at all! I could easily see any of them working in these days. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] would work! “Grandma names”, which [name_f]Martha[/name_f] could easily be classified as, are becoming more common, so she’d fit right in.
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]: I like the sound but dislike the association with the Biblical figure.
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]: Fine in the UK and Commonwealth countries, but I’ve read it has racist connotations in the US so I guess its usability depends on where you live.
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f]: Not really my style but I think it’s a nice name.
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]: Ditto.
[name_f]Moriah[/name_f]: I think this would be constantly mistaken for [name_f]Mariah[/name_f].
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]: I really like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. It’s a lovely, classic name.
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]! It’s adorable. My favourite of your list.
I think [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] work well as sisters, as well as [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f].
All of them are usable imo! My favourites are [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. I think any of those would work nicely as sister names.
Some of the others may be able to explain this better than I, since I don’t fully know all of the reasoning behind it, but [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] has a negative connotation related to slavery, the “Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]” ‘mammy’ stereotype, and so on. It seems to only be in the States though, as I’ve read that the name isn’t quite so taboo in the UK and other places.
I don’t mean this to come off in any sort of offensive way whatsoever, but I think that the tides are turning on things like that. I mean, I’m in my early 20s and didn’t have any sort of negative association with the name at all and neither did many Berries my age (for that matter, the tons of friends and relatives, of varying ages, had no clue what the deal was either). I just don’t know if it holds quite the same weight now as it would’ve ‘back then.’
I love almost all of these Names and have never heard of any of them being referred to as Frumpy except for [name_f]Martha[/name_f]!
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - I love the look and sound of [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] but would never use it because of the negative Biblical Character!
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] - I love this Name, and here in Australia it has no connection to slavery whatsoever ever, thank goodness! However it is a very rarely used Name in Australia because of two other adorable, but exclusively Childlike, associations: [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] the Playschool [name_m]Doll[/name_m] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] Puddle Duck!
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f] - Like one of the previous people, this is my [name_f]Sister[/name_f]'s Name so for me it is a strong, spunky, no nonsense Name with Boyish Nicknames [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_u]Joey[/name_u]!
[name_f]Martha[/name_f] - I used to find [name_f]Martha[/name_f] too “frumpy” for use until my [name_m]Friend[/name_m] named her absolutely gorgeous [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Girl [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! <3
Moriah - I find Moriah looks and sounds really awkward, sorry.
Sarah - This is actually my Name and I have always loved it!
Tabitha - I love this Name, at least partially because I love my Niece called Tabitha!
I have to recommend Joanna and Sarah for Sisters as that is what my Sister and I are called!
Jemima and Tabitha would also make a gorgeous set of Sisters!
Not at all! I love [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. But then I’m in the UK and those have been fashionable (without being super popular) for a while, so I’m used to hearing them on small people.
I also like [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and [name_f]Joanna[/name_f]. [name_f]Moriah[/name_f] is not my style (I think because it reminds me of [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] [name_u]Carey[/name_u]?) and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] feels a bit plain. Nice enough, but a bit dull.
