Opnion and advice on names! Big list

DH & I will be TTC this spring and since Dec we have begun mentally preparing and having fun name talk. We want to build a good starter list now because there is no 9-month deadline, then once we conceive we plan on really breaking it down to 3 names until the birth day, deciding after we meet the baby.

Info: Last name is Barlage. I would like a name that is not overly popular, but most importantly isn’t trendy. At the same time I want a name that is unique and stands out. DH wants a name that isn’t so unique its weird, but doesn’t want an overly popular name either, and like me, wants to avoid trendy names. He is against names that can be found in the dictionary but turns out there have been some he has liked because of the meaning. He doesn’t like boy names for girls, he prefers them to be obviously feminine. He was born and raised in the mid west and is 1/4 japanese, I was born and raised in [name]Ontario[/name], [name]Canada[/name] and moved to the US to be with him. He was in the military when we met. I am bilingual, my family is French Canadian and I would like to have a name with CDN or FR influence, but its not a must, dh and his english family need to be able to pronounce it. We want a name with impact. We want a more traditional mn and are not focusing on that just yet. We plan on pulling a name from our family.

So here is our list so far. This has been discussed and reviewed with my husband, my job is to make THE LIST and he will pick it down from there until we choose our top 3. I was never that little girl who used to think of baby names ect… as a kid. Only one name came to me a few year ago, and I only actually thought about baby names this winter now that we are planning to conceive. I think part of me wanted to save the excitement haha. The list below is of names we’d actually use, I didn’t cover names I loved but couldn’t use.

GIRLS
[name]Gloria[/name]: Immediately loved this one when I saw it, dh thought it was old lady but wants to keep it on the list. I love the name itself but it is on the top 100 of all time list, which is good and bad. It stands the test of time but is also fairly common/known. [name]LOVE[/name] the nn Glow
Avelyn: I love A names, like [name]Ava[/name] and I find this makes a good combo to incorporate that and my mothers name, [name]Lynn[/name].
[name]Anouk[/name]: Really nice French name that dh and I like but i doesn’t vibe with our ln.
[name]Lyric[/name]: Dh is not a huge fan but I love it and refuse to let it go until we have a baby to think about.
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it, too trendy now thanks to Twilight, but just not ready to let go yet.
[name]Sloane[/name]: A less feminine name and doesn’t flow perfect with out last name but I do really enjoy it, and it reminds dh of [name]Ferris[/name] [name]Bueller[/name].
[name]Ophelia[/name]: A name dh and I love and are not bothered by the [name]Shakespeare[/name] character’s tragedy.
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: Another A name we love. DH liked the [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings vibe, and so do I actually haha but the e sounding ending may be too close to the e sound in our ln.
[name]Luna[/name]: [name]Adore[/name] this name but our close friends have a dog named [name]Luna[/name]… which could take some time getting over.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: I love the sounds of these names but the nn “[name]Al[/name]” scares the bejesus outta me… so they may not make it far at the end of the day. Sadness.
[name]Evrose[/name]: Another vowel fn that I love that incorporates [name]Rose[/name], which I also really like and so does dh.
[name]Arianne[/name]: This one seems to cover a lot of our criteria and I can see us using it, but it hasn’t jumped off the page yet. [name]May[/name] just be too early in the game, because none have.
[name]Raina[/name]: Nice feminine name, and it makes me think of “queen” in french, which is reine.
[name]Millicent[/name]: A name I adore but dh doesn’t like, in his opinion its just sticking [name]Melissa[/name] and [name]Vincent[/name] together haha but he stopped hating it after I kept saying how much I love it, and the nn [name]Millie[/name].
Esmé: A name we discovered no doubt thanks to Twilight, but I really love it and it fits a lot of our criteria so I say who cares about Twilight haha I would have found it and loved it regardless.
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: Obviously undecided on the spelling, I like the lyn ending a lot and vowel beginning. Important note, I actually do not like the name [name]Emily[/name]/[name]Emma[/name] and it scares me that it is so close. I knew too many girls by both these names growing up.
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: variation with the line ending. I think these are all beautiful names but I worry about them being too close to the names I don’t care for.
[name]Maple[/name]: Name I first saw here on the birth announcements. I adore it, and the nn “[name]May[/name]” which is also when we plan on TTC lol (TMI), and being Canadian I am obviously very fond of all things maple. I was terrified to tell dh about this one but he actually quite likes it, he just had to make fun of it a bit first which is why I am hesitant about it.
[name]Zahra[/name]: Prefer the spelling [name]Zara[/name] but this spelling makes the pronunciation more obvious, which I prefer. I love the Z but wonder if it is too A heavy for our ln… which I think a lot of our options are.
[name]Fianna[/name]: [name]Love[/name] this name too, as well as [name]Fionna[/name] and [name]Brianna[/name].
[name]Quincy[/name]: Unisex name that can feel very feminine, dh agrees and we love the nn “[name]Quin[/name]”
[name]Arielle[/name]: I love this name but dh has a distant cousin named [name]Ariel[/name], so he isn’t all the way on board. [name]Love[/name] the nn “[name]Ari[/name]” again here.
Chenault: First learned this name a few years ago when I read The Rum Diary by HST. DH said the character reminded him of me, which I have heard before. Nice French name too that is unique. Easy to make the list.
Darynn: Randomly came across this name and spelling on a name list, dh and I both really like it and that it ends in yn/ynn like my moms name.
Emerance/Emerence: Close to some of the other em names that we love but a bit more off, which we kind of like actually.
Lumen: First heard on [name]Dexter[/name] and love love love it, it’s meaning too. It’s also close to [name]Luna[/name] without being the name of a friends dog haha. Crushing this baby pretty hard.

BOYS
[name]Edmond[/name]: My grandfather’s name, I look up to him so much and he is an extremely important person in my life. This is the ONLY name I ever considered years ago and held onto to when he passed away. I love the name in every way but have been having troubles accepting the idea of calling my child by the same name as my grandpa. He went by [name]Ed[/name], we would use [name]Eddie[/name]… I still love it though and so does dh without hesitation. If it is not a fn I have no doubt it’ll be the mn. We would consult family before using this name.
[name]Daxton[/name]: I love names with the letter X, nn [name]Dax[/name].
[name]Emrys[/name]: [name]Love[/name] names that start with vowels haha.
[name]Huxley[/name]: X factor again…
[name]Lennox[/name]: One of my most favorite names but fear the nn [name]Lenny[/name]… but not so much anymore.
[name]Remington[/name]: [name]Love[/name] the nn “[name]Remy[/name]”, 3 syllables which I also like.
[name]Marlow[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it, but my mom’s bf’s granddaughter is [name]Marley[/name], which I also adore.
[name]Griffin[/name]: [name]Love[/name] the masculine and character feel.
[name]Lucian[/name]: Dh’s suggestion. It’s not awful, I really like the name but I just like others more.
[name]Trace[/name]: Another masculine and character feeling name.
[name]Sullivan[/name]: DH and I love this name and the nn “[name]Sully[/name]” but when I was at a restaurant the other day I met a boy named [name]Sullivan[/name] and it made the name seem undesirable.
[name]Maxfield[/name]: DH loves the name [name]Max[/name], this would be my favorite mix of that, I like [name]Maxen[/name] too but it seems a bit too close to [name]Maxim[/name].
[name]Arlo[/name]: A name I found after I fell in love with [name]Marlow[/name].
[name]Leopold[/name]: More unique traditional name [name]IMO[/name], and love the nn [name]Leo[/name].
[name]Edison[/name]: Could be another option if we can’t accept [name]Edmond[/name], but would rule out [name]Edmond[/name] as a mn.
[name]Edwin[/name]: Same as above.
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: [name]Love[/name] the nn “[name]Fitz[/name]” but wouldn’t use it on its own. [name]Fitzroy[/name] is a town near where I grew up so that would be weird, and I did not like Pride and Prejudice so wouldn’t want people asking if thats why we went with [name]Fitzgerald[/name].
[name]Jetson[/name]: [name]Love[/name] the nn “[name]Jet[/name]”… and just really love this name all around.
[name]Montgomery[/name]: Really like this 3 syllable name with the nn [name]Monty[/name].
[name]Quinten[/name]: More masculine version of [name]Quincy[/name] [name]IMO[/name], and can still use the nn [name]Quin[/name].
[name]Vincent[/name]: I really like this name but know too many [name]Vincents[/name]/[name]Vinny[/name]'s… a man accidentally called my husband [name]Vincent[/name] once and he didn’t correct him because he really liked the name haha so it’s on our list for dh.
[name]Rafferty[/name]: Like button.
[name]Phineas[/name]: [name]Love[/name] this nn “Phin” but learned that dh has a cousin who had a baby named [name]Finn[/name]… and there is an ongoing joke in the family that they copy everything we do. He joined the army, cousin joined, he got married, cousin got married, we got a dog named [name]Hudson[/name], they got a dog named [name]Hudson[/name], so then when we went back home to visit we made jokes to the family saying we should pretend that we are going to have a baby and see if they do… and then 4 months later they announced they were and apparently everyone thought we were too. They conceived shortly after that weekend we saw them lol so you see, we really couldn’t use this name now. Ps we pick up/rescue strays, they started doing the same lol. [name]Finn[/name]/[name]Phineas[/name] likeliness is complete coincidence.
[name]Django[/name]: Cool in so many ways.
Goodwyn: Awesome in so many ways.

Unisex-[name]Marlyn[/name]: My father is [name]Mark[/name], mom is [name]Lynn[/name]… this mixes them both nicely but is probably too close to [name]Marley[/name] to use. We’ll see haha.

Can you see any real but nonos that I missed? Help me remove names that have no reason being there or find names that I did not. I feel like I am missing something big when it comes to the girl names, even though I like a lot of our options.

[name]Gloria[/name]: It’s ok. Not a name you hear much anymore on kids so I like that.
Avelyn: I think I like [name]Ava[/name] [name]Lynn[/name] better, but this isn’t too bad.
[name]Anouk[/name]: I think if it doesn’t go with your last name, might be a toss.
[name]Lyric[/name]: This is a hard name to pull off I think.
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: I like it. I don’t get the Twilight reference personally since I’m not a fan.
[name]Sloane[/name]: Too masculine for my taste but there is something I like about it.
[name]Ophelia[/name]: Different for sure, kind of pretty. It’s a maybe [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: I kind of like them. Hard to say if it would go with your last name though without knowing it.
[name]Luna[/name]: I like it but more for a pet. Means “moon” in Spanish. I’m not the biggest fan of Spanish word names unless you’re a Spanish speaker.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t really like.
[name]Evrose[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t like. What about [name]Eve[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], or [name]Eden[/name] with [name]Rose[/name] as a middle?
[name]Arianne[/name]: It’s ok. I like [name]Ariana[/name] more.
[name]Raina[/name]: It’s ok.
[name]Millicent[/name]: It’s one of those names I’m just not sure about. I don’t hate it at all, I’m just not sure how much I like it.
Esmé: I like it. Like with [name]Rosalie[/name], I don’t see the reference. For me, “Twilight” names are [name]Bella[/name], [name]Edward[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name]… oh and that [name]Renesmee[/name] name, whatever it is.
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: Not sure. Not a huge fan.
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: I like [name]Emmeline[/name]. But I agree, she may get called [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Em[/name].
[name]Maple[/name]: I like the connection to it, but I think it’s a little too much.
[name]Zahra[/name]: I like it.
[name]Fianna[/name]: I like [name]Brianna[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name] more.
[name]Quincy[/name]: I think it’s too masculine. What about just [name]Quinn[/name]? That’s become more feminine.
[name]Arielle[/name]: I like it. To me it’s different from [name]Ariel[/name] ([name]Ari[/name]-[name]ELLE[/name] vs [name]ARI[/name]-ell).
Chenault: [name]Don[/name]'t like, sorry.
Darynn: [name]Way[/name] too masculine [name]IMO[/name].
Emerance/Emerence: [name]Don[/name]'t like.
Lumen: It’s ok.

BOYS
[name]Edmond[/name]: I understand the hesitation. I’d feel odd calling my child the same name as a loved one. I’d say definitely go for it for a middle name!
[name]Daxton[/name]: Not a huge fan. What about [name]Dexter[/name]?
[name]Emrys[/name]: I like it but I kind of feel this might be more common for girls? Might be wrong.
[name]Huxley[/name]: Not a fan.
[name]Lennox[/name]: Not bad. [name]Lennon[/name]?
[name]Remington[/name]: I like the [name]Remy[/name] nn, not the biggest fan of the full name.
[name]Marlow[/name]: It’s ok.
[name]Griffin[/name]: Reminds me of Family [name]Guy[/name] personally
[name]Lucian[/name]: I like it. What about [name]Lucas[/name] or [name]Luca[/name]?
[name]Trace[/name]: [name]Kinda[/name] like it. Country sounding to me ([name]Trace[/name] Atkins or whatever).
[name]Sullivan[/name]: It’s ok.
[name]Maxfield[/name]: I like [name]Max[/name]. What about [name]Maxwell[/name] or [name]Maximilian[/name]?
[name]Arlo[/name]: Like it a lot more than [name]Marlow[/name]!
[name]Leopold[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Edison[/name]: Ok. I like [name]Edmond[/name] more.
[name]Edwin[/name]: Actually, I like this one more.
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: Too last namey to me.
[name]Jetson[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t like. What about just [name]Jett[/name]?
[name]Montgomery[/name]: Not bad.
[name]Quinten[/name]: It’s ok.
[name]Vincent[/name]: Like it.
[name]Rafferty[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t like.
[name]Phineas[/name]: Well, with that story I don’t think I’d use it! It’s a good name though.
[name]Django[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t like. What about [name]Diego[/name]?
Goodwyn: Too much of a last name.

Shoot I missed the girl name [name]Noella[/name] too… That’s on the list haha.

Thanks for your insight Jennipea! My last name is in my op, beginning of the second paragraph. I don’t want to post I here too often haha.

GIRLS
[name]Gloria[/name]: I don’t mind this name. It’s not terribly common, which is a plus.
Avelyn: I’m not a big fan. I think I’m oversaturated on [name]Ava[/name] names.
[name]Anouk[/name]: I’m not sure what I think… I think I like it.
[name]Lyric[/name]: I kind of like it. I’m not sure it’s a name I would use myself, but I think it’s pretty.
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: I’ve never read Twilight, so the reference doesn’t bother me. I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Rosalie[/name] and might use it someday. [name]Roselyn[/name] I’m not wild about.
[name]Sloane[/name]: I tend to prefer feminine names, so I don’t love this.
[name]Ophelia[/name]: As long as you’re not bothered by the [name]Shakespeare[/name] tragedy, I say go for it. It’s beautiful.
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: I don’t like [name]Arden[/name] for a girl, but I love [name]Arwen[/name]. I have a friend whose fn and mn is (and I’m not kidding) [name]Arwen[/name] Evenstar. It fits her.
[name]Luna[/name]: I love this name so much.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: These are two names that sound pretty, but like you say… [name]Al[/name] kind of steals from the beauty.
[name]Evrose[/name]: I’m not really a fan of compound names. I would use a name like [name]Eva[/name] or [name]Evelyn[/name] with [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Rosalie[/name] as a middle.
[name]Arianne[/name]: I’m back and forth on this name. It’s pretty, but it also sounds a bit like [name]Aryan[/name].
[name]Raina[/name]: Very pretty and feminine.
[name]Millicent[/name]: I love the nn [name]MIllie[/name], but I just can’t warm up to [name]Millicent[/name].
Esmé: Again, I’ve never read Twilight, but the writer obviously has good taste in names. This is quiet and feminine and will stand up to the test of time. I wouldn’t let a book keep me from using a name I love.
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: I’m not a fan of smooshed names, so this doesn’t appeal to me.
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: I do love [name]Emmeline[/name], though.
[name]Maple[/name]: This name is growing on me. It’s really pretty.
[name]Zahra[/name]: This isn’t my style, but it’s not bad.
[name]Fianna[/name]: I’m don’t love this one, but I do like [name]Fiona[/name].
[name]Quincy[/name]: I tend to think of the [name]Quinn[/name] names as more masculine that feminine. It’s not a bad choice, just not my favorite.
[name]Arielle[/name]: I like this much better than [name]Arianne[/name].
Chenault: I’m not familiar with this, but it’s a pretty name.
Darynn: I don’t like it. It’s too masculine for me.
Emerance/Emerence: I’d have to walk around with this one for a while.
Lumen: It’s okay…

BOYS
[name]Edmond[/name]: I like it, and I love that there is a family tie with it.
[name]Daxton[/name]: I love the nickname [name]Dax[/name], but the fill name isn’t my stule.
[name]Emrys[/name]: I actually like this, but it’s not a name I’d use.
[name]Huxley[/name]: It’s not my style, but it’s okay.
[name]Lennox[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Lennox[/name]. You could always call him [name]Knox[/name] as a nickname.
[name]Remington[/name]: I don’t mind this. I love the nn [name]Remy[/name], and I think the full form might brow on me.
[name]Marlow[/name]: I’m a fan of detective novels, so the [name]Philip[/name] [name]Marlowe[/name] connection is attractive. But I think “girl” when I see it use for a first name.
[name]Griffin[/name]: This is a good, solid name.
[name]Lucian[/name]: I don’t mind this.
[name]Trace[/name]: I’m actually a fan of [name]Trace[/name] Atkins, so I can see this on a little boy. Has a rough and tumble feel about it.
[name]Sullivan[/name]: I love it, and I love the nickname [name]Sully[/name]. But I know what you mean about meeting someone and having them ruin the image of the name.
[name]Maxfield[/name]: I prefer [name]Maxwell[/name], but this isn’t bad. I love the nn [name]Max[/name].
[name]Arlo[/name]: I adore this name.
[name]Leopold[/name]: I like it, and I love the nn [name]Leo[/name].
[name]Edison[/name]: I actually love this, and I generally dislike last name names.
[name]Edwin[/name]: Not bad.
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: I like the nn [name]Fitz[/name], but I don’t care for the full name.
[name]Jetson[/name]: I can’t get The Jetsons out of my mind.
[name]Montgomery[/name]: I’m biased against this name, because I grew up with a [name]Montgomery[/name], and he gave me a negative impression of the name.
[name]Quinten[/name]: I really like this.
[name]Vincent[/name]: It’s okay.
[name]Rafferty[/name]: It’s okay.
[name]Phineas[/name]: I love this name.
[name]Django[/name]: A favorite of mine. I [name]LOVE[/name] it.
Goodwyn: I don’t like it.

Thank you frustratedauthor!

Although I know everyone has different tastes I like hearing people’s impressions and it’ll help wipe the fog from my eyes and make the choices more clear.

Another thing I realized, and it has t do with wanting a name with impact is I’d rather a name grow on someone than they love it right of the bat and then it can become dull. I actually cut a lot of names as I was making this post and some I am already beginning to favor more.

oh my stars i love too many to count! I’ll just list my faves per gender:

GIRLS:

[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Sloane[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name] ( I saw you like that too, although [name]Fianna[/name] was listed )
[name]Ophelia[/name] ( although I fear “opie” as nn, which makes me think of opium! :o )
[name]Emmeline[/name]

BOYS:
[name]Lennox[/name] (with you, [name]LOVE[/name])
[name]Remington[/name]
[name]Arlo[/name] (awesome awesome name)
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]

You have great name taste!

[name]Gloria[/name]: Im not a huge fan, its dated to me but still nice. Gloriane would be a nice french alternative
Avelyn: Prefer [name]Aveline[/name] but I like the significance of [name]Lyn[/name] to you
[name]Anouk[/name]: nms but still a good choice!
[name]Lyric[/name]: not a big fan either
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: Roselaine, [name]Rose[/name]-[name]Lise[/name]/Roselise, [name]Rose[/name]-Lyne (french spelling) would be nice alternatives to [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Sloane[/name]: I like it
[name]Ophelia[/name]: Why not go with Ophélie for your french roots?
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: Like [name]Arden[/name] alot but not [name]Arwen[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]: never been a fan,
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: [name]Alba[/name] is too [name]Jessica[/name] [name]Alba[/name] for me but I like [name]Albane[/name] (french) if the “al” nn scares you maybe you would like Aubane?
[name]Evrose[/name]: I think [name]Eve[/name]-[name]Rose[/name] (a legit name) sounds nicer
[name]Arianne[/name]: I think this sounds nice but unfortunately it makes me think of aryan  I dont think most people do though
[name]Raina[/name]: Nice feminine name, and it makes me think of “queen” in french, which is reine. - Like [name]Raina[/name], prefer the [name]Reina[/name] spelling which meets your french requirements, [name]Reine[/name]-[name]May[/name] is also a nice name
[name]Millicent[/name]: nms
Esmé: You can always go with the Esmée spelling
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: I would go with [name]Emeline[/name] which is the classic spelling in [name]France[/name]
[name]Maple[/name]: nms but cute!
[name]Zahra[/name]: Prefer [name]Zara[/name] too
[name]Fianna[/name]: nms I think [name]Brianna[/name] is the better or the two
[name]Quincy[/name]: I think [name]Quentin[/name] is a better Q unisex name
[name]Arielle[/name]: OK but what about Aurélie or [name]Aureline[/name] instead?
Chenault: Sorry but this is too much of a last name for me
Darynn: nms but it fits your “lynn” requirements!
Emerance/Emerence: [name]Em[/name]érance is a good saint name I like it! You might also like [name]Em[/name]érantine/émérentine
Lumen: I dont know how I feel about this name, it makes me think of Lumene which is a makeup brand

I really like a majority of your boy names and from the girls list I prefer [name]Em[/name]érance, [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Sloan[/name] and Avelyn/[name]Aveline[/name]

The ones I like/*love:

*[name]Lyric[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: I love the nn [name]Rose[/name]/[name]Rosie[/name]/[name]Rosa[/name], so what about just one of them?
[name]Sloane[/name]
[name]Arden[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Evrose[/name]
*[name]Raina[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]: I prefer just [name]Millie[/name]
Esmé
[name]Emmelyn[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Zahra[/name]
[name]Arielle[/name]

BOYS
*[name]Edmond[/name]
[name]Daxton[/name]
*[name]Huxley[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name]
[name]Remington[/name]
*[name]Trace[/name]
*[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name]: Prefer just [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Leonardo[/name]
[name]Edison[/name]
[name]Jetson[/name]
[name]Montgomery[/name]
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]

Thank you thetxbelle! I do really like some of your suggestions. [name]Jenn[/name] and lovebug, thanks for letting me know which names you like, it’s nice to hear feedback.

[name]Gloria[/name]: Not a big fan, I think it’s dated. However I do see the appeal to some degree.
Avelyn: I would prefer [name]Adalyn[/name]/[name]Adelyn[/name].
[name]Anouk[/name]: [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Lyric[/name]: Again, not a big fan… what about [name]Lyra[/name]? I actually think [name]Lyra[/name] Barlage is to die for!
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: Much prefer [name]Rosalie[/name], or if you’re going to go with [name]Roselyn[/name], the spelling [name]Rosalind[/name]/[name]Roslyn[/name].
[name]Sloane[/name]: I like it, but with your last name it’s mediocre. Not terrible, though.
[name]Ophelia[/name]: It is pretty, but the “feel ya” jokes are inevitable. And even though you don’t mind the tragic [name]Shakespeare[/name] character, it’ll still be all anyone else thinks about unfortunately.
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: Much prefer [name]Arden[/name], but either way, the repeating -ar sound in [name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name] Barlage makes me think of pirates… sorry!
[name]Luna[/name]: I wouldn’t use it, because of the dog. You don’t want to have to ask “The baby or the dog?” when your friend calls her name.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: I don’t know about these. [name]Alba[/name] is very celeb, which isn’t necessarily bad, but neither sounds great with your ln, sorry.
[name]Evrose[/name]: It’s okay, it seems a little made-up. What about [name]Primrose[/name]?
[name]Arianne[/name]: If it’s pron. [name]AIR[/name]-ee-anne or [name]AIR[/name]-ee-en I think it’s pretty, but ARR-ee-anne/en is giving me the pirate vibe again.
[name]Raina[/name]: Very pretty, and you could get even closer to the French word spelling it [name]Reina[/name] (which is also queen in Spanish, haha)
[name]Millicent[/name]: Oh gosh, another person who likes [name]Millicent[/name]! I thought I was the only one! I love it.
Esmé: Very pretty. [name]Love[/name].
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: [name]Way[/name] too close to [name]Emily[/name]/[name]Emma[/name] if that’s what you’re trying to avoid.
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: See above, esp. if you’re pronouncing them [name]Emma[/name]-leen or [name]Em[/name]-leen.
[name]Maple[/name]: I like your reasons, and if the name has a lot of personal meaning for you I can’t help but say go for it!
[name]Zahra[/name]: I also prefer the spelling [name]Zara[/name], I think people will know how to pronounce it. This one doesn’t feel piratey even with the Ar sounds, I think it’s just so exotic and pretty.
[name]Fianna[/name]: If you love [name]Fiona[/name] or [name]Brianna[/name], I’d say use those. This to me just seems like an awkward squish of them, sorry.
[name]Quincy[/name]: The only [name]Quincy[/name] I ever knew was male, but I could see it more on a girl. It’s cute. [name]May[/name] not age well.
[name]Arielle[/name]: I think I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like [name]Arielle[/name], mostly because it’s a princess name. But for someone else it’s beautiful.
Chenault: Pretty. Much easier to use in [name]Canada[/name], I’m sure (I’m in the USA and nobody would [name]EVER[/name] know how to pronounce/spell it!)
Darynn: [name]Darren[/name] (sp. this way) is exclusively a boys’ name to me, sorry. The spelling Darynn is trendy and nms.
Emerance/Emerence: Never heard of it, but it’s okay. Sort of pretty. Reminds me of the word emanate, though.
Lumen: This is an anatomical word which isn’t the best connotation. Kind of icky, actually. Not a fan.

BOYS
[name]Edmond[/name]: So handsome. [name]Love[/name] it, and the meaning behind it (I plan on using my beloved grandfather’s FN as a MN for my first boy also!)
[name]Daxton[/name]: [name]Just[/name] go with [name]Dax[/name], I think it’s easier and nicer.
[name]Emrys[/name]: Not bad, but it feels a little feminine to me.
[name]Huxley[/name]: I think of the Cosby show, I know they were the Huxtables but it just sounds so similar.
[name]Lennox[/name]: I actually like this, I used to think [name]Lenny[/name] was a horrid NN but my good friend’s husband is [name]Len[/name]/[name]Lenny[/name] and now I like it.
[name]Remington[/name]: I like it, it is the name of a gun company, IDK if that bothers you.
[name]Marlow[/name]: All girl, [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Marlon[/name]?
[name]Griffin[/name]: Not bad.
[name]Lucian[/name]: Also not bad.
[name]Trace[/name]: I disagree a little bit on the masculine sounding part, I think it sounds girly b/c of the name [name]Tracy[/name]. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though.
[name]Sullivan[/name]: Handsome!
[name]Maxfield[/name]: Handsome.
[name]Arlo[/name]: Pirates again. [name]Arlo[/name] Barlage. It is a handsome name though.
[name]Leopold[/name]: I like it.
[name]Edison[/name]: I actually like this a lot, but because of [name]Edmond[/name]'s meaning to you I would say go with [name]Edmond[/name] if you can.
[name]Edwin[/name]: It’s okay, see above.
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: There are other [name]Fitz[/name] names… like [name]Fitzwilliam[/name] for instance. Or you could just go with [name]Fitz[/name]. [name]Even[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] would be fine.
[name]Jetson[/name]: Not bad.
[name]Montgomery[/name]: [name]Remington[/name] and [name]Montgomery[/name] would make fantastic brothers!
[name]Quinten[/name]: Would prefer [name]Quentin[/name], and you could still have NN [name]Quin[/name] with that.
[name]Vincent[/name]: I have a bad association, but it’s a perfectly fine name. Handsome and nice and traditional.
[name]Rafferty[/name]: I honestly don’t see the appeal, but I know it gets rave reviews, so maybe it’s just me! I think it’s okay.
[name]Phineas[/name]: I wouldn’t, because of the cousin who unintentionally or intentionally copies everything. He’ll think you named your kid after him because you like the attention so much, lol.
[name]Django[/name]: Absolutely fabulous. [name]Love[/name] it.
Goodwyn: Not a big fan.

[name]Gloria[/name]: I feel like you can get to the nn Glow with a less well known, dated name, but it fits your criteria of “they won’t like it right away.”
Avelyn: I really prefer [name]Aveline[/name] or Avelina, but the significance of [name]Lynn[/name] makes me appreciated the spelling.
[name]Anouk[/name]: I don’t think this is a horrible choice with your ln.
[name]Lyric[/name]: I really don’t like this one.
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: very pretty.
[name]Sloane[/name]: This seems like a great middle name option.
[name]Ophelia[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: “e” ending?
[name]Luna[/name]: love the name but not after a dog you see all the time.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]: you could always use [name]Allie[/name] as a nn?
[name]Evrose[/name]: not a fan.
[name]Arianne[/name]: nice, and [name]Aria[/name] could be a nn.
[name]Raina[/name]: always loved this one, and [name]Reina[/name] or [name]Reine[/name].
[name]Millicent[/name]: love it.
Esmé: very nice.
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: definitely prefer [name]Emmeline[/name].
[name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: I don’t think [name]Emma[/name], [name]Emily[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] are the same. [name]Emmeline[/name] is in a class of it’s own (a very awesome class).
[name]Maple[/name]: love, love, love.
[name]Zahra[/name]: I don’t like this one.
[name]Fianna[/name]: I don’t like it. I’d much prefer [name]Fiamma[/name] (medieval Italian) or [name]Fiona[/name].
[name]Quincy[/name]: I think there are much better [name]Quin[/name] names - [name]Quintana[/name], [name]Quintina[/name], [name]Quintessa[/name], etc
[name]Arielle[/name]: [name]Ari[/name] is cute. [name]How[/name] distant is this cousin?
Chenault: love.
Darynn: I actually kind of hate this…sorry!!
Emerance/Emerence: same as above, sorry.
Lumen: for some reason this sounds like the name of a lubricant brand to me, or eye lubricant maybe, but I have NO idea why.

[name]Edmond[/name]: great choice
[name]Daxton[/name]: this sounds really, super made up, although I don’t know if it is.
[name]Emrys[/name]: this one’s ok but doesn’t seem to honor your heritage
[name]Huxley[/name]: much better than [name]Daxton[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name]: avoid unwanted nns for this one by putting it in the middle. [name]Edmond[/name] [name]Lennox[/name]?
[name]Remington[/name]: [name]Remy[/name] is super, super cute
[name]Marlow[/name]: really dislike
[name]Griffin[/name]: love.
[name]Lucian[/name]: meh. not that great.
[name]Trace[/name]: no
[name]Sullivan[/name]: this will always only be a surname to me.
[name]Maxfield[/name]: I much prefer [name]Maksim[/name].
[name]Arlo[/name]: much better than [name]Marlow[/name].
[name]Leopold[/name]: I could love this, esp. with the nn [name]Leo[/name].
[name]Edison[/name]: love, and would have the same nn as [name]Edmond[/name].
[name]Edwin[/name]: not nearly as great as [name]Edison[/name]
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: I totally would have asked about Pride & Prejudice. lol
[name]Jetson[/name]: the Jetsons?
[name]Montgomery[/name]: [name]Monty[/name] is super cute.
[name]Quinten[/name]: [name]Quentin[/name] is much more handsome.
[name]Vincent[/name]: very handsome, very popular.
[name]Rafferty[/name]: teddy bear cute
[name]Phineas[/name]: you could try to find a different, similar nn and build on that. Like Fen - Fenway.
[name]Django[/name]: I’m not seeing the appeal. [name]Dante[/name], maybe?

Have you thought about adding any Japanese names to your list? Kaede (kah-ay-day) means maple in Japanese. I have seen it used on both men and women, but mainly women.

Greyer, you seem to hit a lot of my doubts about each name on the head haha. As for the name [name]Arianne[/name], I pronounce it [name]Ari[/name]-[name]Anne[/name] because I knew it in French first but I’d see a lot of English only speakers saying air-ee-[name]Anne[/name]. I like both so we’d need to settle in pronunciation haha. As for the friend with a dog named [name]Luna[/name], they live in the other side of the country now so at least the dog/child wouldn’t get confused. My biggest qualm with [name]Ophelia[/name] is the “feel ya” joke too. We prefer the [name]Raina[/name] spelling because I love the name [name]Rain[/name] but dh pull the dictionary card. We both have a strong connection to water so that spelling wins haha.

Ok so some of this has helped me take some names down and build a strong “roun two” list. [name]Luna[/name] s getting the ax because I keep loving Lumen even more. All the names containing [name]Rose[/name] are getting axed. I like [name]Rose[/name] but it’s too common for me, but it’ll go to the mn list. [name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name] aka [name]Al[/name] is out. [name]Raina[/name] is out because as pretty as it is, it couldn’t take out many other names. Avelyn is out because it sounds too close to [name]Adeline[/name], which is to close to [name]Madelyn[/name], dh’s first cousins name who is our age. [name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emmeline[/name] names are out because I prefer the other two [name]Em[/name] options. [name]Huxley[/name] is out, dh wasn’t over the moon anyways. [name]Fitz[/name] names are out, too much going on. I still like [name]Max[/name] names so will keep options open. [name]Marlow[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name] match too much, this thread really helped me notice. [name]Rafferty[/name] suffered the same fate as [name]Raina[/name]. [name]Emrys[/name] has lost its touch, so has [name]Daxton[/name]. Phineas is just impossible.

The name no one noticed that I forgot to add and posted afterwards, [name]Noella[/name] shall stay.

From your list I really like:
Girls: [name]Rosalie[/name] (my fav name!! ), [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Arielle[/name], [name]Quincy[/name] and [name]Luna[/name] (I hate it when people give their dog one of my favourite names haha)
Boys: [name]Huxley[/name], [name]Lennox[/name] (u can nickname him “Nox” …I also have a friend with a similiar name and I used to hate the [name]Lenny[/name]-nickname,but someday I just started calling him [name]Lenny[/name] and for some reason didnt mind anymore ha), [name]Griffin[/name] (really sounds handsome and is not overused - could be a winner!), [name]Sullivan[/name] (nn [name]Sully[/name] is so cute!), [name]Arlo[/name], [name]Jetson[/name], [name]Rafferty[/name] & [name]Phineas[/name].

Good luck!!

Christinamariane, we have had some Japanese names on this list but it’s hard to find one westernized enough haha. I love [name]Akira[/name] and [name]Akiro[/name], but [name]Akira[/name] turned me off because [name]Keira[/name] is so trendy right now. I’m certainly open to more.

Juliemarie, I am the same way with the nn [name]Lenny[/name]! I used to not like it and nn would of been Nox but out of te blue I’ve grown quite fond of it. Which I like even more, because it fits our style. A name that makes you go Hmmmmmm? And then before you know it it’s grown I you and you dot remember ever knowing it another way.

GIRLS:
You have awide variety of styles and taste, which I rather envy, ok here goes! (from your original list)

[name]Gloria[/name]: This does feel dated to me, I think partly because I know 2 [name]Gloria[/name]'s my mother’s age. Beyond that I like it.
Avelyn: Not a huge fan of [name]Lyn[/name] anything, I prefer [name]Avalon[/name], even just [name]Ava[/name], which I’m sure is too popular for your tastes.
[name]Anouk[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]. My favorite name for ages. If I am lucky enough to have a girl, she will be an [name]Anouk[/name]. I think it sounds fine with your last name. I could only see a problem with a surname starting with K or maybe a sharp N sound in the last name.

[name]Lyric[/name]: I like it, I prefer other word names like [name]Story[/name], [name]Fable[/name], but I can understand the appeal.
[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Roselyn[/name]: I am Biased as I can’t stand [name]Rose[/name] names (so overused and cutesy), except for Rosefinch and [name]Primrose[/name]! Sorry no help on this one.
[name]Sloane[/name]: I like [name]Sloane[/name], it seems to get very divided opinions as some find it very masculine. I think it’s a strong name for a girl.
[name]Ophelia[/name]: I don’t have a problem with [name]Shakespeare[/name] heroine thing, I knew an [name]Ophelia[/name] in High School and she did not have any issues. Still for an O name, it’s not my favorite sound. the phelia part turns me off a bit.
[name]Arden[/name]/[name]Arwen[/name]: [name]Love[/name] both of these for girls. [name]Arwen[/name] is quite LOTR but so what, and [name]Arden[/name] is lovely.
[name]Luna[/name]: I would avoid due to the dog thing, It’s pretty but I always feel like something is missing with this name.
[name]Alba[/name]/[name]Alma[/name]:Hmm I would not imagine the nn [name]AL[/name] would come naturally for a girl. [name]Ally[/name] is more likely. I adore [name]Alma[/name], I just love it -so very vintage and underused. [name]Alba[/name] is very pretty too.
[name]Evrose[/name]: Not a fan of [name]Eve[/name] or [name]Rose[/name] so No.
[name]Arianne[/name]: I don’t really care for this name or [name]Adrienne[/name] or similar names. I see the [name]Anne[/name] in it and think just plain [name]Anna[/name] would be better. I am not a fan of [name]Ari[/name] I suppose.
[name]Raina[/name]: Pretty…
[name]Millicent[/name]: I go back and forth on this one! There is something very put together and classic about it, but I don’t know how wearable it is as a full name. I think [name]Milly[/name] is inevitable, which is cute.
Esmé: I’ve never seen Twilight, so I don’t associate it with that. It’s a lovely name with nice Literary connections. Probably my favorite on your list after [name]Anouk[/name].
[name]Emmelyn[/name]/[name]Emlyn[/name]/[name]Emelyn[/name]/[name]Emalyn[/name]: [name]Emmeline[/name]/[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmaline[/name]: I like [name]Emmaline[/name]. the rest don’t do anything for me, especially the lyn endings.
[name]Maple[/name]: Adorable!
[name]Zahra[/name]: I like it, but I prefer [name]Zara[/name] too.
[name]Fianna[/name]: Not really a fan. I like [name]Finola[/name] though.
[name]Quincy[/name]: I agree with both you and your DH. [name]Lovely[/name].
[name]Arielle[/name]: NMS.
Chenault: Interesting, it is a little surname sounding. But I’m intrigued
Darynn: Too masculine.
Emerance/Emerence: [name]Lovely[/name].
Lumen: I like it I prefer this to [name]Luna[/name].
[name]Noella[/name]: very pretty. A nice variation on [name]Noelle[/name] and [name]Ella[/name].

BOYS
[name]Edmond[/name]: I woud use this as a middle name, given your family associations with it.
[name]Daxton[/name]: Not a big fan, but [name]Dexter[/name] I like.
[name]Emrys[/name]: [name]Lovely[/name] name. Really a great pick.
[name]Huxley[/name]: I almost love it.
[name]Lennox[/name]: I like it.
[name]Remington[/name]: NMS. [name]Don[/name]'t care for the full name at all, but [name]Remi[/name] is a nice NN.
[name]Marlow[/name]: [name]Love[/name] this on a boy or girl. It reminds me of 1940’s detective movies. Quite stylish.
[name]Griffin[/name]: seems a bit dated and NMS
[name]Lucian[/name]: I always think this looks too close to Lucifer. [name]Lucas[/name] or [name]Luca[/name] is nice.
[name]Trace[/name]: Not a fan.
[name]Sullivan[/name]: [name]Lovely[/name] name. I think [name]Sully[/name] is so cute too.
[name]Maxfield[/name]: I prefer a different name to get [name]Max[/name], [name]Maximillian[/name], [name]Maksim[/name]? I am sure there are more.
[name]Arlo[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Leopold[/name]: I like it.
[name]Edison[/name]: I like it. I know a teenager with this name. He goes by [name]Edison[/name] no nn’s.
[name]Edwin[/name]: nice.
[name]Fitzroy[/name]/[name]Fitzgerald[/name]: Reminds me more of the author F. [name]Scott[/name] [name]Fitzgerald[/name]. It’s a bit of a heavy name. Have you thought of [name]Fritz[/name]?
[name]Jetson[/name]: Reminds me of the Jetsons cartoon show.
[name]Montgomery[/name]: [name]Love[/name] it, perhaps because I love the actor [name]Montgomery[/name] [name]Clift[/name], [name]Monty[/name] is very cute. Although it may remind some of The Simpsons.
[name]Quinten[/name]: I like it.
[name]Vincent[/name]: I like it but I’m not a fan of the nn [name]Vinny[/name].
[name]Rafferty[/name]: Dislike.
[name]Phineas[/name]: It’s okay. But it seems like you have vetoed it, no great loss!
[name]Django[/name]: NMS
Goodwyn: Not really a fan of such a virtue heavy name. [name]Love[/name] the wyn ending.

Unisex-[name]Marlyn[/name]: Ambivelent, I think you have better names on both your lists

Thanks for your input blue dahlia, everyone has been so helpful! I have SO many more names I love and yes, a variety of style haha. I like the name [name]Avalon[/name] BUT I want to avoid [name]Ava[/name], one because of popularity and two because my moms BFF who I have known since I was a kid is [name]Eva[/name], and so that’s another reason why I am vetoing Ev/Av names. A lot of ppl cal out [name]Jetson[/name] because of the cartoon, and I’m guilty in satin its actually a reason why I love it haha my hesitation is our dog is [name]Hudson[/name], the son ending is a bit too similar. I love [name]Noella[/name] because it’s delicately feminine and in French Canadians it is quite well known, I talk to ppl from QC all the time with this name. Since we don’t like in QC it doesn’t bother me.

I dont know why I forgot this but Lumen is a light measurement, so Im not sure if I would use it. I remember seeing this come up as a name before and saying that but I totally forgot because all I could think about was the makeup brand Lumene lol.
