I feel like I’ve seen every single name that could possibly use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nickname - and I’d ideally like to avoid the meaning of “fair-haired” which every [name_m]Fin[/name_m]- name seems to have. Thoughts include [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], [name_m]Florin[/name_m], [name_m]Thorfin[/name_m], every [name_m]Fin[/name_m]-/[name_u]Finn[/name_u]- variation I can think of, [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Phelin[/name_m], [name_m]Fagin[/name_m], etc., etc.
I think I like [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] / [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] best of the above, and ignoring [name_u]Francis[/name_u], but as previously noted the meaning is one I’d prefer to avoid. The only other alternative meaning for the prefix [name_m]Fin[/name_m]-/[name_u]Finn[/name_u]- is “from Finland” (literally, a [name_u]Finn[/name_u]!) but that’s even less suitable (I have no Scandinavian heritage).
I am very probably wayyyy over-thinking this, but I do like to find good and suitable name meanings, and I do love [name_u]Finn[/name_u]!
I think [name_u]Francis[/name_u] called [name_u]Finn[/name_u] works great actually. My husband also was trying to find a way to get to [name_u]Finn[/name_u] (or rather he expected me to find a way to get there) but I too don’t really care for most of the [name_u]Finn[/name_u] names you’ve listed.
I think you’re overthinking this. No one is going to descend from the sky and punish you because your son [name_u]Finn[/name_u] doesn’t have fair hair and/or Scandinavian heritage. If you love [name_u]Finn[/name_u], name him [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. It’s a name in its own right. No need to try and squeeze [name_u]Finn[/name_u] out of [name_u]Francis[/name_u].
I wouldn’t worry about [name_m]Fin[/name_m]/[name_u]Finn[/name_u] meaning Finnish - after all I’m sure [name_u]Francis[/name_u] can mean Frenchman or [name_m]French[/name_m] person! I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is a lovely name. [name_u]Francis[/name_u] is too, but it seems a shame not to use the cute nickname [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].
I don’t think [name_u]Francis[/name_u] nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is very intuitive. I would just name him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or use a longer version that the nickname [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is more obvious for.
Yep. My thoughts exactly (also made me laugh). I love [name_u]Francis[/name_u] (and [name_u]Finn[/name_u]), but I don’t see the point if he’d never be called his actual name. [name_u]Finn[/name_u]'s fine :).
