Hi everyone!
I’m trying to find a name with a strong meaning. George Orwell is my favorite writer and I was born in 1984 I’d like to call my baby girl Orwell but I’m not sure, apparently this is a name for a boy. What do you think? Does it sound too weird?
I don’t think it works on any gender, unfortunately It’s just too… well, Orwellian. It makes me think of dystopian, authoritarian societies, not cute little babies. Maybe a name with a similar sound, like Oriana, Orla or Olwen. Or just Georgia, Georgiana, Georgina after his first name? Blair, after his real surname?
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] is pretty cool! I don’t hate it for a girl (I guess you’ve got nn [name_f]Orla[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ora[/name_f], [name_u]Rori[/name_u] too if she doesn’t love it?) but I’m not sure I’m 100% sold. I think possibly because of the ‘Orwellian’ association, as @tallemaja notes.
Since ‘George Orwell’ was a pen name, you could consider [name_u]Blair[/name_u] (his ‘real name’ was [name_m]Eric[/name_m] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] Blair) or [name_f]Erica[/name_f]?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe [name_f]Julia[/name_f], as in from 1984?
It’s a bit of a stretch, but it’s thought [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] came from one of his favourite places, [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] [name_u]River[/name_u] - so [name_u]River[/name_u], maybe?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] as a cool middle?
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] definitely makes me think boy over girl. What about [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] in honor of [name_u]George[/name_u]?
I’d go with [name_u]Blair[/name_u] considering [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] was a pen name for [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] but I’m assuming if you appreciate the author enough to name your child after him you knew that? [name_m]Boy[/name_m] or girl it comes off as pretentious but this is a forum and that is just an opinion. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] might be another interesting allusion to the novel.
I don’t like it for either tbh, because of the singular brilliance and genre-defining quality of his writing it’s just too closely associated with dark dystopian societies, he is pretty much universally the master of dystopian fiction. There’s already lots of great suggestions of less direct alternatives inspired by [name_m]Orwell[/name_m].
