Osiris

A friend of mine is considering using this name for a boy. WDYT?

Ummm… It reminds me of an ostrich to be honest. And [name]Osiris[/name] is the [name]Lord[/name] of the Dead in Egyptian mythology, not sure if she’s aware of that. But is does have the nn [name]Ossie[/name] which is a plus. Props to your friend for being bold, anyway!

Is she thinking of giving him a more mainstream mn?

It’s sort of cool. I think I’d be really impressed if I met one. I love unusual names, but this would be too unusual for me, personally. It could be great on the right kid though.

I love it. As you know, we can’t use names ending in S because our last name starts and ends with S, but I love [name]Osiris[/name]. You could also suggest [name]Ozias[/name] to your friend. A plus is it comes with the cute nn [name]Ozzy[/name].

It’s interesting that ancient Greece and its mythology produced many names used in English (though many more are considered really odd), while ancient [name]Egypt[/name] and its mythology didn’t. This familiarity in the mythic context combined with unfamiliarity as personal names lends the same cool factor to Egyptian mythic names that, say, [name]Andromeda[/name] or [name]Achilles[/name] have. That said, [name]Osiris[/name] is rather like naming someone Hades - though I’d be much more surprised to meet the latter than the former.

I think she would have to have a good reason for it, other than “it sounds cool.”

I did tell her that [name]Osiris[/name] is the Egyptian god of the underworld…she didn’t seem to think it mattered.

I also suggested maybe a name like O’[name]Cyrus[/name], where it sounds the same but isn’t. Is O’[name]Cyrus[/name] weirder than [name]Osiris[/name]?

My son’s name is [name]Osiris[/name], which means “he who has a powerful vision.” I named him after the god, which if you look into it further you will find out why [name]Osiris[/name] became god of the underworld. He was a kind and gentle earth god who taught the Egyptians to love each other, love the earth and love their gods. He was given the honor of judge of the underworld due to the fact that he WAS a good person. Any one who wants to argue that one needs a refresher on their Egyptian mythology.

O’[name]Cyrus[/name] not only looks made up but looks terrible! If your friend wants to name her child [name]Osiris[/name], there are over 440 American’s named [name]Osiris[/name], it’s still used, but not common.

I actually though it was more of a girls name(because I mixed it up with [name]Isis[/name]).
It’s got this “Oh, [name]Cyrus[/name]!” feel to it, like a guy called [name]Cyrus[/name] came in the bathroom just as you stepped out the shower.
So, I’d say I’m not a fan of the name, egyptian god or not, although I don’t mean to offend the little [name]Osiris[/name] mentioned in this thread :frowning:
