I think about Oswald Mosley too. He was the main antagonist in the latest season of Peaky Blinders, which is quite a popular show, and so I think a lot of people will make that connection.
aww itâs nice to hear that you know one!! [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m] is adorable!
okay, thanks
I think itâs entirely usable! [name_f]My[/name_f] primary association as an American is definitely the childrenâs TV show. [name_f]My[/name_f] second association is honestly [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] [name_m]Osbourne[/name_m] even though I know his name isnât [name_m]Oswald[/name_m]âŚ
Overall I think itâs a really sweet offbeat name and the nn [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m] would be so cute!
thank you!! x
Oswald is quite charming -clunky handsome, if thatâs a thing
i like that description! thanks
I didnât even think of [name_u]Lee[/name_u] [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] at first and Iâm in the US. I thought of the Penguin from Batman, but I like it.
I think [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] is an adorable name! Iâm American and my first association is actually [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] the [name_u]Lucky[/name_u] Rabbit ([name_u]Mickey[/name_u] Mouseâs predecessor)
I think it would work fine as a first name, and is perfectly usable as a middle if thats how you plan to use it
I like the name but think of [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] [name_f]Mosley[/name_f] too, which could be particularly problematic in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]. Itâs important to be careful with pre-war fascism associations.
This is my thinking exactly. Although admittedly I am American and my first association was [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] the [name_u]Lucky[/name_u] Rabbit, this is the type of association that I think itâs just not worth the risk to ignore. Although I think a lot of names can be reclaimed and every name is going to have some negative association, I think this is one I would really advise not to do. I didnât really think of [name_u]Lee[/name_u] [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] either, admittedly, and if it were just that association I thought you could probably go for it. But [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] [name_f]Mosley[/name_f], especially in the UK, is one of those âI just wouldnât risk itâ situations.
Most anything is used as a middle. And in the UK, maybe it is usable as a first.
Here in US, I canât get behind it as a first, bad associations.
@itsjustjack @EJK1720 @choupette
I really appreciate all of your opinions and iâm definitely aware that itâs important to consider negative associations with names. I researched [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] [name_f]Mosley[/name_f] and he wasnât a good guy but I canât help feeling that there are certain names deemed unusable because of certain associations whilst other names that also have negative associations are considered fine. I mean if [name_f]Mosley[/name_f] was a friend of Hitler and that in turn makes [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] unusable then surely [name_f]Eva[/name_f] (Hitlerâs wife) should be unusable too? Other prominent members of the party include [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u], [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f], [name_u]Neil[/name_u], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. But these names arenât considered unusable. Presidential names are increasingly common with people naming their children after presidents who supported racism and slavery.
Do you get what I mean? I am in no way arguing that any of these people are good people but surely every name will have some bad person connected to it.
Oswald [name_u]Avery[/name_u] was a molecular biologist who played a major role in the discovery of DNA. [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] Veblen was an American Mathmatician, and [name_m]Oswald[/name_m] [name_m]Morris[/name_m] was a cinematographer. Not all the associations are bad ones. I donât see why anyone would automatically assume that my future child was named in honour of a fascist or assassin.
Whatâs the point of asking for opinions if you just end up telling anyone with a different point of view that theyâre wrongâŚ
iâm not saying that theyâre wrong, iâm just asking for their further views. If you actually read what I said you would understand that. No need to be rude to me @Sophiesimmons
when did i tell anyone that theyâre wrong?
Right after the word âbutâ. I wasnât rude, just asking a question. You seem to already have made up your mind so literally what was the point.
the words âyou are wrongâ are not written in any capacity. Iâm debating the usage of the name, thatâs the whole point of the thread. I have listened to everyoneâs points of view and taken them in. Now iâm just asking for more clarity and expressing my concerns. You are being rude and offish with me for no reason.
I also stated that I would use a different name anyway because of the negative associations so thatâs me âalready making my mind upâ after listening to you all. I said I would use [name_m]Oswin[/name_m] instead. But I donât appreciate the condescending comments and making me out to be a bad person just for asking about a name.
I love [name_m]Oswin[/name_m]! Adorable but works on all ages! Works perfectly with your other names!
