I decided to start a thread where we can compile a list of links to name popularity sites for various cities/states/provinces/countries/etc. besides the U.S. SSA list. I’ll be adding a few that I know about; others are welcome to add to it.
This thread is only for “official” popularity lists (i.e. those based on a registry of babies from a government agency, etc. born in each jurisdiction). Lists such as those from babynames.com, babycenter.com, and similar sites (that are compiled from names liked or used by their users) do not qualify.
I’m going to start off with New [name]York[/name] City’s lists, going back to 2002 (the earliest one I could find). I’m going to link to the press releases for each year. On each one there will be a link to a PDF file that lists names used in the city at least 10 times (with the rank and number of occurrences). Those lists also break down the names by ethnicity (Hispanic, [name]Asian[/name], White, [name]Black[/name], and a combined list as well). If the releases of recent years are any indication, the lists have come out in [name]October[/name]-[name]December[/name] for the previous year’s list.
Now to another very large U.S. city, here’s a link to a searchable database of names given in Los Angleles County (most recent year is 2007; goes back to 1995). http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/dca/pfn.htm
Going beyond the U.S. here’s a link to the popularity lists for [name]Alberta[/name], [name]Canada[/name]. They have a list of the top 25 for each year, as well as a list of all names registered for each year (yes, even names used only once). The page linked to goes back to 2000; on another page listed in the left column you’ll find a link for lists going back to 1990. (Note that the lists of all names for 2009 hasn’t been given links there yet, but you can go there yourself by following the URL style for the other years and replacing that year with “2009” in the URL.
On to another Canadian province, here’s a link to the lists for British [name]Columbia[/name] (2009 list available; goes back to 1997). Names with at least five occurrences are listed. http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/babynames/index.html
Now onto Australia; here’s a link to New South [name]Wales[/name]'s database. Their feature works similar to the author of another baby name book’s NameVoyager (except that this one gives the number of births instead of the number per million like the aforementioned NameVoyager). Most recent year of data available is 2007; decade-by-decade data available back to 1900. Names used at least 10 times each year (or an average of 10 times a year for coverage periods longer than a year) are shown. http://www.nsw.gov.au/baby-names
Here’s a link to some of the U.K. stats (includes links to Excel files giving names used at least three times in [name]England[/name]/[name]Wales[/name] in 2008).
The above website gives popularity info for the country, state, city, and in most large cities, hospitals.
This site is in French, so you might have to translate it. But its totally worth it, because there’s as many wonderful French names on there as well as statistics.
